Simply supported beam with both side overhanging subjected to U.D.

Consider a simply supported beam with overhand on both sides. The beam is carrying a U.D.L.,
over the entire length as shown in figure.
Consider a simply supported beam with overhang on both sides. The beam is carrying a U.D.L.,
over the entire length as shown in figure.
To draw SFD and BMD we need RA and RB.
Since, the beam shown in figure is symmetrically loaded,

RA = RB = wL/2

(1)

Taking section (X X) between D and B, at a distance x from point D, the SF at the section is
given by
Fx = + w. x

(2)

Therefore, at x = 0
x = a;

FD = 0

FB = + w

Now, taking section between B and A, at a distance x from D.

Fx = + wx = wL/2
At x = a;

(3)

FB = + w (a L/2)

The position where Fx = 0 can be obtained from equation (3)

w.x w.L/2 = 0
x = L/2

The values of SF at remaining salient points can be obtained by symmetry.

The bending moment at section (X X) between D and B is given by:
Mx = wx2/2

(4)

Therefore, at
x = 0;

MD = 0

x = a;

MB = wa2 / 2

The bending moment at point E is;

ME = wL/2 L/4 + wL/2 (L/2a)
ME = wL2/8 + wL2/4 w.L.a/2
ME = w.L2/8 wL.a/2

(5)

Now, there may be three cases

A<L/4
wL2/8 w.L.a/2 > 0
ME > 0

i.e., ME is positive.

As shown in figure

a > L/4
wL2/8 w.L/4 . L/4 = 0
ME = 0

i.e., ME is zero,

As shown in figure

a > L/4
wL2/8 w.L.a/2 < 0
ME < 0

i.e., ME is negative

As shown in figure

Solved Examples To Sketch SF And BM Diagram

Example : A simply supported beam overhanging on both sides is subjected to loads as shown
in figure. Sketch the SF and BM diagrams and locate the position of point of contraflexture.

Solution: Consider a section (X X) at a distance x from end C of the beam.

To draw SFD and BMD. We need RA and RB.
By taking moment of all forces about point A, we get
RB 6 + (2 7.2) + 1 1.2 (6 + 1.2/2) + 2 6 (6/2) 1 1.8 (1.8/2) = 0
RB = 9.45 kN
From condition of static equilibrium,
RA + RB 2 (1 1.8) (2 6) (1 1.2) = 0

RA = 2 + 1.8 + 12 + 1.2 9.45

RA = 7.55 kN

To draw SFD we need SF at all salient points.

Taking a section between C and A. SF at a distance x from end C is;
Fx = w.x = 1.x
Thus, at x = 0;
x = 1.8 m,

(1)
FC = 0

FA just right = 1.8 m

Now, consider a section between A and B, at a distance x from C.

Fx = 1.8 + 7.55 2 (x 1.8)

(2)

Thus, at x = 1.8 m; FA just right = 1.8 + 7.55 2 (1.8 1.8) = + 5.75 kN

At x = 9.0 m;

FB just left = 1.8 + 7.55 2 (7.8 1.8) = 6.25 kN

Again, considering a section between B and D, at a distance x from C,

Fx = 1.8 + 7.55 12 + 9.45 1 (x 7.8) = + 3.2 (x 7.8)

(3)

Thus, at x = 7.8 m; FB just right = + 3.2 (7.8 7.8) = + 3.2 kN

At x = 9.0 m;

FD = + 3.2 (9 7.8) = + 2 kN

S.F. becomes zero between A and B, when changes sign,

Fx = +5.75 2 (x 1.8) = 0
x = 4.675 m from end C
(The sign is taken positive when the resultant force is in upward direction on the LHS of the
section).
To draw BMD, we need B.M. at all salient points, taking a section between C and A, BM at a
distance x from end C is:

Mx = wx2 / 2
Thus, at x = 0,
At

(4)
MC = 0

x = 1.8 m

MA = 1 x (1.8)2/2 = 1.62 kN m

Now, considering a section between A and B, at a distance x from C;

Mx = 1.8 (x 0.9) + 7.55 (x 1.8) 2(x 1.8)2 / 2

(5)

Thus, at x = 1.8 m;
MA = 1.8 (1.8 0.9) + 7.55 (1.8 1.8) 2(1.8 1.8)2 / 2
MA = 1.62 kN m

At x = 7.8 m,
MB = 1.8 (7.8 0.9) + 7.55 (7.8 1.8) 2(7.8 1.8)2 / 2 = 3.12 kN m
Again, considering a section between B and D, at a distance x from end C.
Mx = 1.8 (x 0.9) + 7.55 (x 1.8) 12 (x 4.8) + 9.45 (x 7.8) 1 (x 7.8)2 / 2

(6)

Thus, at x = 7.8 m;
MB = 1.8 (7.8 0.9) + 7.55 (7.8 1.8) 12 (7.8 4.8) + 9.45 (7.8 7.8) 1 (7.8 7.2) 2 / 2 =
3.12 kN m
At x = 9.0 m; MD = 1.8 (9.0 0.9) + 7.55 (9.0 1.8) 12 (9.0 4.8) + 9.45 (9.0 7.8) 1 (x
7.8)2 / 2
= 14.58 + 54.36 50.4 + 11.34 0.72

=0
The maximum bending moment occurs at a point where SF is zero, i.e., at x = 4.675 m from end
C. it lies between A and B. Therefore from equation (5), we get
Mmax = 1.8 (4.675 0.9) + 7.55 (4.674 1.8) (4.675 1.8) 2
= + 6.655 kN m

The points of contraflexture occur at position where Mx = 0, therefore, from equation (5), we get
1.8 (x 0.9) + 7.55 (x 1.8) (x 1.8)2 = 0
1.8 + 1.62 + 7.55 x 13.59 x2 + 3.6 x 3.24 = 0
x2 + 5.75 x + 3.6 x 11.97 3.24 = 0
x2 + 9.35 x 15.21 = 0
X = 7.25 m or 2.1 m
