2.2.2. In order to achieve the objectives and the philosophy above, the College
shall be fully equipped with modern facilities and able staff.
2.2.3. Other then the academic programs offered at the College, the ultimate
objectives of the College is to turn out dynamic individuals independent in
their thinking and responsible in their actions. The character building
components of the program offered at the College is geared towards
nurturing self-realisation, human relationship, economic efficiency and public
responsibility among the students.
2.3. Why Should MRSM Accomplish
2.3.1. We believe that education is necessary for the fullest development and
enrichment of the individual.
2.3.2. The continued success of Government policy requires that every individual
be afforded that education necessary to enable him to make an intelligent
choice and to effect necessary compromises on question of public policy.
2.3.3. Education is a sound and necessary investment in the future well being of
our Nation and its citizens.
2.4. The MRSM Should Continue To Develop
2.4.1. The fundamentals skills of communication reading, writing, spelling as well
as other elements of effective oral and written expression; the arithmetical
and mathematical skills, including problem solving. Continuous improvement
is desirable and necessary.
2.4.2. Appreciation for our Rukun Negara.
2.4.3. Civil rights and responsibilities and knowledge of Malaysian institutions.
2.4.4. Respect and appreciation for human values and for the beliefs of others.
All children should be free to seek the truth wherever it can be found.
The school must help the students apply ethical values, which will guide their moral
judgements and their conduct, and to develop the recognition that these values stem
from, among other sources, their spiritual and religious convictions.
The potentials of MRSM as an educational institution as reflected in the philosophy,
objectives and the goals expressed above put a challenge to all of us in MARA and
more particularly the faculty of MRSM. Tomorrows education for our children is, in a
very real sense, being conditioned and fashioned by development now taking place
in MRSM and in other Government school. Some of these developments can be
identified and their likely consequences projected; others of equal consequence may
be unrecognised. If MRSM can continue to play its role as pacesetters in the filed of
educational innovations, we would have done our bit for the education in this
country.
The task of leadership in the years ahead will be to restrain those who
would seek all answers in technology while ignoring those who believe
no answer are to be found.

PHILOSOPHY
Maktab Rendah Sains MARA is an effort of MARA to establish a better learning
environment which can create a healthy student group, definite in ambition, committed to
the building of a better Malaysia, creative and intelligent.
The growing importance of science and technology in the wake of rapid development and
increased pace of industrialization creates pressing educational demand: Students who
have the potential need to be directed from the beginning to scientific and technical
pursuits and to be prepared for increasingly sophisticated ideas and techniques. MRSM
trains students to apply scientific method of observation, classification, deduction and
synthesis to their physical and social environment.
The responsibility of MRSM is much wider than simply educational. It extends beyond the
preparing of students it meet the needs of a fast developing country. Students individual
need for full-self knowledge is given as much emphasis. The MRSM system provides
opportunities for learners to discover their own potentials as they participate in the
numerous mental, emotional and social interactions involved in the learning process.
Along with the scholastic abilities and attainments, MRSM also inculcates qualities of
truthfulness and character, commitments to his environment and dynamism and
leadership.

GOALS
Every student, after completing a program of study at the MRSM is expected to have
improved in regard to certain attitudes, understanding and skills. These include:
i.

To develop critical faculty and clear thinking and a healthy, clean and open
mind.

existing environment instead of teaching them that there is a chance of controlling or shaping
their own environment by purposeful creative thinking.
To deal with the ever-increasing problems that are surrounding us today, there is an urgent
need for a reappraisal of the curriculum today. To begin with we have to change the adult-pupil
relationship and the role that teachers play in school. The new curriculum must be based on a
merger between pupil and teacher relevant to every child and not teacher centered. It needs to
be based on collaborative learning. It should concern itself with inquiry making, dialogue and
discussion. The inquiry should be interdisciplinary with students with students working in
groups.
There is a need to revise the objective of education. Today we proclaimed that our (all) schools
exist for learning and we often say we must get together and make our students learn more to
cope up with the expanding syllabus. How far will this kid of attitude takes us I do not know but
what I do know is that our school should not only exist for learning but also for thinking. This
is our aim and the aim of MJSC. It is our responsibility to produce men and women who can
think and not who can memorize, who can make new scientific discoveries, who can find more
adequate solutions to impelling world problems, who cannot be brain-washed an men and
women who can adapt to change and still maintain sanity. Something must be done to make
our education system more meaningful especially in our social context and many points in the
system need radical revision and attitudes need reappraisal. And the most important of all is the
realization of the existence of the creative potential a factor sometimes not synonymous with
intelligence within the individual.
Teachers can of course help the child in the discovery of this inherent potential by providing
opportunities for learners to discover their own bowers as they participate in the numerous
mental, emotional, aesthetic and social interaction involved in the learning process. Teachers
should not only concerned with the content and product of the learning processes but also with
the continuing process of self discovery. The goal of education is only partly achieved and
reached when pupils get well academically. The full achievement of the goal would be when he
continues to discover himself in the process of getting an education.
Teachers should initiate the discovery of potential and talent among children. In this way
teachers participate in the discovery of human potential. To realize his potential the student
need to grow and develop through time and experience which are of great duration than the
13
school can supply. Therefore while the school helps to realize human potentials, it is likely to
make only a part of the total contribution to the ultimate realization of the fulfillment.
Nevertheless that fact of the contribution could provide the inertia and stimulus for further
realization of the potentials.
The stimulation of curiousity and wonder at natural phenomena and the recognition of science
as a major human activity should be MJSC guiding principle all the way.
It would be generally agreed that young children need to be involved in many real and practical
situations; this indeed is the present position in most part of the curriculum.
The Nuffield project has stated that:
1.
2.
They must be encouraged to ask questions and their question and answer must be
treated with respect otherwise they will be reluctant to ask anymore.
Unusual curiosity is the acknowledged characteristic of the gifted child and they satisfy this
curiosity is normally short-lived and can make them to turn to other topics and from one
problem to another. The result is a rapidly growing collection of data which remain unconnected
for some time, but without which it will be impossible to have any understanding of the
underlying general principles of science that come later.
Children should be encourage to look at science not as a subject to be done at special times, in
special rooms, using special apparatus but as a way of discovering, which can be applied
anywhere, at nay time, with whatever materials happen to be available. If he is dependent on
scientific apparatus, the discovery he is likely to make about the world is likely to be severely
restricted. Perhaps the most important reason for homemade equipment does the child in
designing and constructing it gain the understanding.
14
15
The gifted child is interested in and inquisitive about his total environment as it relates to
his day-to-day experiences. This natural curiosity of the child should be exploited in
stimulating him to undertake experiences in as many areas as possible.
2.
Children ask questions about their environment. Some questions may have no depth and
require little attention but indicate a passing interest; others may arise from a real concern
about a problem. The alert teacher will recognize the childs need to find out. This is the
true spirit of inquiry. On the basis of question asked by the child dynamic learning
experience can be provided as the teacher leads him to find answer through his own
efforts and initiative.
Interest of the child and develop habits of accurate observation, laboratory skills and
methods of critical evaluation.
3.
4.
Since children vary so much in background and ability teachers should employ diversity of
experiences to develop their senses.
5.
Pupils are capable of handling materials ordinary thought to be above their capacity.
6.
The curriculum must be planned to provide opportunities for inquiry into the broad areas
of science and humanities. It must also be flexible to individualize instruction and to excite
creative thinking.
A planned but flexible program in all areas must have quality breadth and depth so that
interest could be maintained throughout.
7.
8.
Pupils who leave school should have the training in science, which will prepare them in
the world of the present and future.
9.
The experiences in science should be related to the other areas as a whole and should
provide opportunity for emphasis on the use of written and spoken language,
mathematics, arts, and the humanities.

THE HOMEROOM
PROGRAMME
The Original Concept Paper by:
JAMALUDDIN ABDUL HAMID
03/03/1972
Foreword
This Homeroom guide is prepared with a view of giving a brief outline of the basic concept and
objective of the Homeroom programs to teachers and those concerned with students
development.
Homerooms programs are part of the schools curriculum and therefore it is as important as the
academic aspect of the curriculum. Most of the free time in the blocked schedule can be utilized
for this purpose. For an institution like ours the Homeroom programs is a necessity to mould a
dynamic student community, which is in fact a precondition for its success and progress. It is
hoped that this program will serve its purpose as it intended to be.
The orientation week is the most suitable time to start of the program, which will then be a
weekly feature of the college.
The preparation of this guide has more over taken the local needs of the Malaysian children
into considerations.
Yours Sincerely,
(Jamaluddin bin Abdul Hamid)

wholesome and challenging activities the will develop the character and good human
relations of these youth.
4.
5.
To make a content follow-up of each students growth in all areas of his developments to
the end that he many develop a proper attitude to him, to the society where he belongs,
and to the world as a whole.
21
Finally, it is the duty of the duty of the committee on Homeroom activities to evaluate the
activities, methods, materials and outcomes of the Homeroom classes. The Homeroom, a
period is educational and the programs and activities must have to be set up with the standards
of achievements based on the objective of the Homeroom. The units of measurement shall be
agreed upon by the members of the committee and based on these for the good programs they
have presented for the whole school year.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE HOMEROOM ADVISER?
The Homeroom is a little home in the school. It is a small place in the school where congeniality
reigns, brotherhood among the boys and girls is recognized and informality is a distinct
characteristic. As it is the real home, love shall abide, respect for the parents and for one
another must exist and freedom to do things that are reasonable and good shall be felt. The
boys and girls shall feel that they are free within reasonable limits to do and say things that
rebound on the welfare of most of them and they are relieved of whatever tension they have
which may have stocked up because of the difficult assignments and / or the socialized
relationship with some of the teachers of the different subjects area. It is here where the
youngsters shall realize the other youngsters may have personal or social problems or worries
similar to their own. It is during the Homeroom period in which student learns that appropriate
solutions may be indirectly found or self-adjustments may be made without causing anybody
any embarrassment or tension. Towards this end the Homeroom should be so utilized and its
activities so structured that a wholesome and pleasant atmosphere would be created and would
prevail in the room. Then and only then will relationship between the student Homerooms be
cordial and family-like.
The Homeroom adviser whose role is to structure such a situation as would be favorable to the
development of sound and healthy relationship in the Homeroom has many responsibilities
which when carried out properly will contribute to the successful achievement of the big goal.
22
Educating the members of the Homeroom is the main aims and objective of the
Homeroom plan.
The Homeroom adviser who has been thoroughly oriented on the purpose, functions,
methods and materials of the Homeroom will exert all efforts to develop among the
students a favorable attitude towards the Homeroom by helping them understand what its
aims are and what benefits they can obtain from it. Talking it over with them in an informal
way in much the same way as a father and mother talks to his or her children, telling them
about what to expect and what not expert from it.
2.
i.
The student shall be made to understand that the Homeroom periods are not like
their other subject periods in which they have lessons to prepare for they have
assignment to work on at home and they have grades to receive at the end of the
semester. The Homeroom is something different from all these. It will be their
period and it will be their turn to handle the period not the teachers. The will have
a say on what activities to undertake base on the suggested outlined prepared by
their very own organization and theirs is the responsibility to make it a success.
ii.
The Homeroom adviser will be there with them not to reproach them for their
failure but to help them and in turn to be helped. Each one can learn from the
other. It will be just like at home in which parents and children cooperate for the
success of the family as the whole. The Homeroom organization lies in the family
unity in the school.
23
When the officers have been selected, the adviser should, as much as possible, allow
them to exercise their initiative. He should refrain from dictating what he thinks should be
done by the youngsters. These young leaders can do much if they feel confident in
themselves and if they know have the full moral support of their adviser.
3.
Guiding the officers and members in presenting the different activities and programs in the
Homeroom.
The Homeroom adviser has to make the officers and members realize the importance of
careful preparation of the activities and programs of the Homeroom. In this connection, he
shall give them orientation on the various phases relative to program preparation.
There is the importance and necessity of scheduling. Scheduling is not within the preview
of the functions of the Homeroom members, since the committee on Homeroom activities
a year ahead to prevent duplication of materials and to have a well-balanced emphasis on
the various topics accomplishes this. However, such scheduling is made flexible enough
to allow for the getting in of some good materials when they become available during
unexpected periods but rigid enough to prevent rush and short time planning.
Three types of program materials are schedule for balanced emphasis.
These are as follows:
i. Seasonal activities.
This type of material refers to the commemoration of important events or seasons,
like National Day, Children Day, Arm Forces Day, Labour Day, Hari Wanita, and Hari
Guru etc.
ii. Guidance activities
This type refers to activities intended to help the members understand themselves
and their environment to the full realization of their personal, academic and social
development. This also includes civic programs.
24
iii.
The learning experiences are arranged topically and psychologically. The activities are
scheduled in such a way that the progression corresponds to the proper adjustment of the
student to their school life and the organizational pattern is intended for all the yaer
scholars of the MRSM.
2.
The placement of the Homeroom period during the day is flexible, depending upon the
best interest of both Homeroom teachers and members. It may be scheduled first period
in the morning or in the afternoon. However, it is to be emphasized that all Homeroom
shall meet at the same period, once a week. This serves the assembly function of the
Homeroom.
3.
Based on the principle of planning and selecting the learning experiences, the students
must be given the chance to experience the behavior in the objectives and the experience
must be interesting to the leaner. The Homeroom is geared towards the child-center
approach. It is so structured that it makes it possible for the student to learn through
experience the students are given vicarious situations for problem solving through free
discussions. The idea is to assist the students solve real life problem from simple life
adjustments to more complicated situations.
4.
Throughout all the learning experience, the essential element is the purpose of selfdirection and life adjustment. The Homeroom adviser stays at the background for moral
support and guidance. The adviser may initiate the activities but the student does the
actual execution to the extent that he may develop philosophy of life thus the main
25
objectives may be drawn from the resources of the community, resulting in relating the
material to life needs.
5.
Since the subject matter of the Homeroom does not deal with merely acquisition of
knowledge but with the change of behavior; judgement of progress may be based on
terms of external criteria like observation of manifested behavior, use of psychological
measures, etc and not a factual tests. The changes in behavior are a part of growth and
are supposed to be continuous throughout life.
2.
3.
Buzz session.
The buzz session may be used once in a while to vary the techniques in the Homeroom.
When the topic for the day deals with a problem in which the reaction and participation of
all or most of the members of the Homeroom are desired, this technique may be utilized.
26
The whole class may be divided into several small groups of five or six students in each
group. The same problem may be thrown to all the groups, but it may divide into several
phases. Every group is assigned one or two phases of a problem to be discussed among
themselves with one among them acting as recorder of the group who notes down their
various reactions, suggestions and recommendation. When a group is very small, the shy
youngsters are encouraged to come out of their shells and give out their ideas, which they
may not be able to do when placed in a big group.
They talk among themselves for a given period of tome, say twenty or twenty-five
minutes. Then, they break up the small group and from into a big group again. Here, the
recorder or another member of each small group reports to the whole body their
deliberations. Thus, the ideas of almost all the youngsters are obtain through the buzz
session technique.
4.
5.
27
6.
Projects
A Homeroom group may decide to work on a certain project such as beautifying a portion
of the schoolyard allotted to them. In one period they discuss about their plans, like filling
that portion of the ground and the putting pebbles or small stones over it, bringing plants
such as bougainvillea, roses or ferns; painting all of the pots they will bring with them with
just one color and preparing the allotted place for their potted plants. In another period
they execute whatever can be done of the things they have planned. They go to that
portion of the yard and work according to plants with the adviser, working with them, as
does a father or mother at home. Some other periods after this may be utilized in
evaluating and improving that they have done. Planning executive such a project may
improve the conditions of the school and community.
7.

28
representative group with a note and some flowers or fruits to cheer up the sick friend. In
case the latter has been decided on thy prepare cooperatively the note to be delivered by
the group. If they all decide to go, they talk about the proper behavior they will have to
observe and the things they will have to say.
9.
29
10.
Self-Evaluation Notebook.
Individual students keep self-evaluation notebooks in which they list down at the end of
the day the incidents, which may show hat kind of students they are.
Example:
11.
Good point
Bad Point
I greeted my teacher
When I met him
I was late in my
class.
12.
Problem box.
Individual students write their problems addressed to their teacher who in turn tallies
them. The problems most common to the students are taken up in class. In this
connection, care should be taken not to divulge names to avoid embarrassment.
13.
Problem writing
Individual students write letter stating their problems and address them their adviser or the
guidance counselor. The latter helps the students either by personal interview or by
written answers.
30
14.
Radio Quiz.
A participant draws from a question box a slip of paper on which a case is written. He
answers the question before the class. The case should fit the needs of the class. Here
are some sample cases:
15.
i.
Ahmad caught Ismail stealing books, fountain pens and money during
their Physical Education class. Ahmad informed his advisor about the case. Was
Ahmad a squealer or a good student?
ii.
Karim want to a bookstore to buy a colored paper for his class in arts. He saw
some of his classmates making so much noise in the nearby store. What must he
do? Why?
Debates
Issues that may be pertinent to students welfare may be resolved through debates.
16.
Pantomime
Proper behavior in public places like the library, canteen, cafeteria, theater, concert hall,
public parks, etc. maybe illustrated through correct actions followed by intelligent
discussions.
17.
18.
Story-telling period
Stories teaching moral lessons or other important implications on students the adviser
may tell lives after which lively discussion follows.
31
19.
20.
Talent show.
Scholars may be asked to show their talent in singing, reciting poems, declamation,
playing musical instruments and other special abilities, which may interest the class.
The scholars develop the traits of good leadership and the virtues of
good membership.
Illustrative Sayings:
Explanation:
Human being are by nature gregarious, thus high school student want
to organize themselves into groups. Democracy is based upon the
idea cooperative leadership; therefore it is the responsibility of every
student to elect qualified leaders into office. The officers of each
Homeroom organization may be chosen depending upon the group
needs.

2.
3.
Elections of officers.
In as much the constitution has been prepared and ratified by the group, the election of
officers may now be taken up. A temporary chairman is assigned to be the leader during
this period. Then the election takes place. The elected officers henceforth lead the group
in the planning, preparation and execution of the different activities under the guidance
and direction of the adviser.
While it is true that the Homeroom organization has officers are not elected immediately
during the first Homeroom meeting at the beginning of the school year. The students are
given a chance to think about the idea and to prepare themselves for it. The first few
meeting therefore and held with the adviser as the head of the class. When the officers
take over, the adviser relinquishes the position and stay in the background. However,
when some urgent matters come up once in while, the adviser takes over the period from
the elected officers.

HOMEROOM
PRAKATA / PENDAHULUAN

hubungan sesebuah keluarga. Hasilnya, penasihat menjadi seakan-akan ayah atau ibu;
dijalankan selama setahun.
APAKAH PERANAN PENASIHAT HOMEROOM?

1.
Para pelajar perlu memahami bahawa waktu Homeroom bukanlah seperti waktu

i.
Aktiviti Bermusim
musim, seperti Hari Kebangsaan, Hari Kanak-Kanak, Hari Angkatan Tentera, Hari
Buruh, Hari Wanita, Hari Guru dan sebagainya.
2.
44
waktu pertama sebelah pagi ataupun petang. Ia boleh juga diletak di waktu terakhir
petang. Walau bagaimanapun perlu ditegaskan bahawa setiap Homeroom akan
berjumpa pada waktu yang sama, perlu seminggu. Ini menunjukkan fungsi perjumpaan
Homeroom.
3.
4.

mereka, penasihat hendaklah meminta agar setiap ahli memperkenalkan diri mereka
masing-masing.
Beritahu pelajar bahawa mereka perlu berpasangan, setiap orang memilih pasangannya.
47
6.
Projek
Sesebuah kumpulan Homeroom boleh memutuskan sesuatu projek seperti mencantikkan
satu bahagian kecil kawasan rumput sekolah. Selama satu waktu mereka hendaklah

hendaklah memenuhi keperluan kelas. Berikut ialah contoh kes:
15.
i.
Ahmad ternampak Ismail mencuri buku, pena-pena dan wang semasa kelas
Pendidikan Jasmani. Ahmad memberitahu penasihatnya di kelas. Adakah Ahmad
seorang pengadu atau pelajar yang baik?
ii.

a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
ii.
memberi jaminan agar setiap ahli mendapat peluang bercakap tanpa gangguan.
menolak usulnya sebelum undian dibuat. Apabila keputusan dicapai, ia menjadi
dipertimbangkan.
