SWOT Project Scien?st
Takeaway Messages
SWOT (Surface Water & Ocean Topography) will use
radar interferometry for measuring the eleva=on of
water on Earth.
Water eleva=on on land provides water storage and
river discharge > water budget and cycling.
Water eleva=on over the ocean provides ocean
current speed and direc=on > oceanic ux of heat
and carbon.
Resolu=on and coverage makes SWOT unique.

Final Remarks
SWOT is a pathnder, like Seasat, TOPEX/Poseidon,
QuikSCAT, Aquarius, EOS, TRMM, Cloudsat, OCO, SMAP, etc.
These missions are the powerhouse for mee=ng the
challenge of observing and monitoring Earth to provide
important informa=on to sustain the modern society.
The informa=on is essen=al for achieving the goals of clean
air and water, preparedness for extreme events, and
adapta=on to long-term environmental changes on
con=nental scales.
Achieving these goals is crucial to Americas prosperity and
security. Con=nuing and enhancing NASAs Earth programs
should be a key element of a strong America.
