Present perfect

Present perfect with for and since

Use

With the present perfect, for and since describe the

We use the present perfect to talk about past experiences

or events, when the time is not important or not known.

Ive bought some new jeans.

There hasnt been a lot of rain recently.
We sometimes use ever in questions to mean at any time

in our life until this moment.

Have you ever tried trail biking?

Form

duration of an action or event which started in the past

and continues into the present.
We use for + a period of time (for five years, for three

months, etc.).

Ive had these shoes for two years. (And I still

have them.)
We use since + a point in time (since last week, since

yesterday, etc.).

We have lived in this city since 2012.

Affirmative
I/ Youve finished.

I/ You have finished.

He/ She/ Its finished.

He/ She/ It has finished.

We/ Theyve finished.

We/ They have finished.

Negative
I/ You havent left.

I/ You have not left.

He/ She/ It hasnt left.

He/ She/ It has not left.

We/ They havent left.

We/ They have not left.

Questions
Have I/ you finished?
Has he/ she/ it finished?
Have you/ we/ they finished?
Present perfect: have/ has + past participle

of main verb

We have finished. He has left.

In spoken language, we usually use the short forms (s/ve,

havent/ hasnt) after a subject pronoun.

We use the full forms (have/ has, have not/ has not) in

formal texts.
Do not confuse the short form of has (s) with the short

form of is (also s).

The past participle is formed like the past simple.

We use how long with the present perfect to ask

questions. We usually answer these questions with for or

since.

How long have you lived in this city? Since

2012./ For five years.

Present perfect with still, yet and

already
We use still and yet to say that something hasnt changed.

Still is used in negative sentences and it comes before

has/ have. We use yet at the end of the negative
sentence.

John still hasnt bought anything in the sales.

We havent tried wakeboarding yet.
We use yet at the end of the question form.

Have you joined the fashion design class yet?

We use already with affirmative sentences to say that

someone has done something. We use it between has/

have and the past participle.

Ive already seen that film.

Beth has already been to the gym today.
