In an interview Thursday with
the Leader & Times, Slattery called
Classens initiative to go to a collegiate game of this magnitude
absolutely phenomenal.
I had him last year as a student,
and I knew, ever since I met the
kid, he was talented and he had a
knack for photography, he said.
A lot of people can see that.
When he approached me with
that question of whether I knew
anybody, I thought it was really
cool, and I wanted to make sure
he had that opportunity to take
pictures at the collegiate level.
Classen has been doing photography for a couple of years now
under the teaching of local
photographer Troy Emery.
Hed teach me how to take
better pictures. It just kind of
blossomed from there, Classen
said. He let me borrow his
camera.
Classen likewise reads a lot of
photography magazines, and in
some of the stories he has read, he
discovered that many times, spots
are available for photographers at
athletic events.
You just say, Hey can I have a
spot on the court? he said.
Theyll usually give it to you. I
figured it would be even better if I
could get Mr. Slattery because he
went to school, he could get me a
better spot.
After he graduates, Classen
plans to go to seminary to be a
pastor while doing photography
on the side.
Slattery said Classens talents,
with his level of experience behind
the camera, are more advanced
than most other picture takers.
Kadens talents for photography surpasses the talents that
we have currently, he said. Some
of our photographers are
beginners. Hes been taking
pictures for over a year now. Weve
gotten kids who have zero

shutterbug said there was a lot of

you might not be invited back,
Classen told Slattery.
Classen was impressed with
Koch Arena too.
Its a really nice stadium, he
said. Not as big as I thought it
would be. It felt like a high school
stadium, so I was kind of familiar
with the set up.
Classen was one of four photographers at the game, and he
patrolled the baseline with the
basketball goal in the center and
cheerleaders on the side.
We are on the other side of the
cheerleaders during the first half,
when theyre on offense, he said.
They were coming towards us.

possession.
Ratzlaff added the police
department will never call citizens
asking for money to avoid arrest. If
anyone receives a phone call
similar to this, Ratzlaff advised not
send the money and contact the
Liberal Police Department at 620626-0151 immediately.

grade and talk to them about fire
prevention. As far as education for
adults goes, we dont have a lot of
that right now.
Even though March is known as
Fire Prevention Month, Regier said
the department does not really see
March as such, as the department
does more of their prevention
presentations in October for Fire
Prevention Week. But the things
the department does do for
throughout the month is get information out there and make people
more aware of the need of smoke
detectors. Regier said every
residence should have one in every
sleeping area, one in the hallways
and one close to the kitchen area.
In fact, the NFPA reported three
out of five home fire deaths
between 2007 to 2011 were caused
by fires in homes without smoke
alarms or working smoke alarms.
Thats the biggest thing is
making sure everyone has smoke
detectors because that is the one
thing that can wake you up in the
middle of the night if theres a fire
that breaks out, Regier said. With
the drier weather were having and
the wind right now, I would
strongly encourage people not to
do open fires in their backyard
since its coming up on that season
where people like to have little
chiminea fires so with that, make
sure its fully out when youre
finished with it and other things
like that. If we can get everyone to
get smoke detectors (and we do
offer detectors for free here at the
fire department), that will give
people a chance to get out.
According to the NFPA, working
smoke alarms cut the risk of dying
in structure fire by half and halfs a
pretty big number.
And with the time of year when
Regier said several people burn
their yards approaching, Regier
said it is important for those people
to have some safety measures as
well. With the weather having also
been windy lately, it is time to take
special care with safety.
One of the things we can do to
kind of help control that is people

At halftime, the photographers
went to the other side of the court,
and though unsure why, Classen
said there was much more space
there.
You could even go on the
sidelines, he said. I had a really
good spot during the second half.
Classen even had a close
encounter with a basketball,
nearly getting hit with it.
One of the Wichita State
players was coming up court and
threw the ball, and I realized that
its not going to hit the goal, he
said. At that point, I realized that
I had to go right, and the photographer next to me had to go left.
So where does the young
Classen go from here? Short term,
besides high school sports, he said
he would like to shoot as many

like to burn their yards this time of
year, Regier said. When they call
in for their burn permit, we try and
educate them about the proper way
to do that and things they need to
watch out for. Of course if its too
windy we dont let them burn, and
we explain to them why they cant
do it that day. We just try and
educate people as much as we can.
One of the other things Regier
said the department emphasizes
during their presentations with
local students is the importance of
having an escape plan. According
to a survey from the NFPA, only
one-third of Americans have both
developed and practiced a home
fire escape plan. That survey also
showed nearly three-fourths of
Americans do have an escape plan,
but more than half never practiced

it.
Fire is a very dangerous thing. I
think sometimes people take for
granted what could happen with a
fire and what actually happens
during a fire, Regier said. We just
want to make people aware of that
and what we try and do with the
kids is tell them to practice an
escape plan, which is the route you
should take if you need to get out
during a fire. People take for
granted when its hot and smoky,
they tend to panic and it can be
very easy to get lost in your own
house. All we can do is educate
people when we get the chance.
Members of the fire department
will also be on hand Saturday at the
Childrens Healthy Fun Fair, which
Regier said is a great opportunity to
give out information to both

children and their parents. Overall,

Regier said, the most important
thing for the department is to
educate the community.
Our biggest thing really is we
want everyone to understand the
importance of smoke detectors,
thats the biggest thing we push is
for people to get smoke detectors
in their homes along with common
sense safety while cooking in their
kitchen, Regier said. Also, be
careful discarding cigarettes,
especially with this dry weather
throwing them out the car window
isnt really a good idea this time of
year with all the dry grass, thats a
major way grass fires get started. A
lot of fire prevention is common
sense so if you dont think
somethings right to do, dont do
it.
