A Troubled Love Affair
Hamlet and Ophelia are in a troubled love affair. Hamlet a young Prince who has recently
lost his father appears to be going crazy. Is he madly in love with Ophelia, a pretty girl? Hamlet
and Ophelias troubled love affair is driven by family, nobility, and insincerity.
Hamlet and Ophelias troubled love affair is driven by family. Ophelias father Polonius
gives her some unusual advice when he says As to give words or talk with the Lord Hamlet.
Look to it, I charge you (I.iii.143-144.) He is forbidding her to have a relationship with Prince
Hamlet. He told her not to talk to him or return any of his love letters. So Ophelia being an
obedient daughter followed his command and ignored Hamlet. Polonius thinks that Ophelia is
responsible for Hamlets madness and eventually Ophelia will come to the same conclusion. So
family complicated their love affair.
Hamlet and Ophelias troubled love affair is driven by Nobility. Again Polonius tells
Ophelia, Do not believe his vows, for they are brokers (I.iii.136.) Polonius also tells Ophelia
that Hamlet is not true to her and he flirts with many women because he is young and a prince.
Since Hamlet is nobility Polonius tells Ophelia that Hamlet is too good for her. Hamlets nobility
has made his relationship with Ophelia more complex.
Hamlet and Ophelias troubled love affair is driven by insincerity. Lately Hamlet has not
been completely honest with Ophelia which has left both hurt. No, not I. I never gave you aught
(III.i.105.) He is lying straight to Ophelias face by saying that he never sent Ophelia any letters
even though Ophelia is holding them in her hand. He also denies ever loving her and really hurts

her. Hamlet also reveals that I am but mad north-north-west (II.ii.402.) Which means that
Hamlet is faking his loss of sanity. He is acting crazy only when he wants to acts crazy. Polonius
told Ophelia to talk to Hamlet so he could spy on them to see if the reason for Hamlets insanity
was that he was madly in love with her. But this plan did not go well because Hamlet finds out
that he is being spied on so he says, He may play the fool nowhere but ins own house.
(III.i.143-144.) Hamlet is very mad at Ophelia for lying to him and being deceptive. This has
separated him and Ophelia because he has been lying to everyone and being very deceptive.
Hamlet and Ophelias dishonesty is ruining their relationship.
Hamlet and Ophelias troubled love affair is driven by family, nobility, and insincerity. In
a perfect world Hamlet and Ophelia would end up together but three things have kept them from
being together. The first is family, Ophelias father made the first mistake that messed up their
relationship. Second is nobility, because Hamlet is a Prince and Ophelia is not royalty she may
not be good enough for him. Last is insincerity Hamlet has been acting crazy and doing very rash
things that have hurt Ophelia. Hamlet and Ophelia both loved each other but life got in the way
of their relationship.
