Handling FRUs

Handling FRUs
This section describes the precautions that you must take and the
general procedures you must follow when removing, installing, and
storing any field replaceable unit (FRU).
Certain FRUs are hot swappable; that is, you can replace these
components while the storage system is running. Disk drives and
Blower modules are hot swappable. Blower modules must be
replaced within two minutes to avoid an automatic shut down of the
storage system.
If your storage system is configured for high availability (redundant
power supplies), your power cooling modules are also hot
swappable.
Power/cooling modules in a non-high availability environment, link
control cards, and DAEs are not hot swappable. Before servicing these
parts, the server and DAE for each FRU must be powered down.
Front bezels or EMI shields should always be attached and each
compartment should contain a FRU or filler panel to ensure EMI
compliance and proper air flow over the FRUs.
You should not remove a faulty FRU until you have a replacement
available.
When you replace or install FRUs, you can inadvertently damage the
sensitive electronic circuits in the equipment by simply touching
them. Electrostatic charge that has accumulated on your body
discharges through the circuits. If the air in the work area is very dry,
running a humidifier in the work area will help decrease the risk of
ESD damage. Follow the procedures below to prevent damage to the
equipment.
Read and understand the following instructions:
1. Provide enough room to work on the equipment. Clear the work
site of any unnecessary materials or materials that naturally build
up electrostatic charge, such as foam packaging, foam cups,
cellophane wrappers, and similar items.
2. Do not remove replacement or upgrade FRUs from their antistatic
packaging until you are ready to install them.

3. Before you service a storage system, gather together the ESD kit
and all other materials you will need. Once servicing begins,
avoid moving away from the work site; otherwise, you may build
up an electrostatic charge.
4. An ESD wristband is supplied with your storage system. To use
it, attach the clip of the ESD wristband (strap) to any bare
(unpainted) metal on the storage system; then put the wristband
around your wrist with the metal button against your skin.
5. Use the ESD kit when handling any FRU. If an emergency arises
and the ESD kit is not available, follow the procedures in the
Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit) section.

Emergency
procedures (without
an ESD kit)

When an ESD kit is not available, use the following procedures to

reduce the possibility of an electrostatic discharge by ensuring that
your body and the subassembly are at the same electrostatic
potential.
These procedures are not a substitute for the use of an ESD kit.
Follow them only in the event of an emergency.
1. Before touching any FRU, touch a bare (unpainted) metal surface
of the cabinet or storage system.
2. Before removing any FRU from its antistatic bag, place one hand
firmly on a bare metal surface of the storage system, and at the
same time, pick up the FRU while it is still sealed in the antistatic
bag. Once you have done this, do not move around the room or
touch other furnishings, personnel, or surfaces until you have
installed the FRU.
3. When you remove a FRU from the antistatic bag, avoid touching
any electronic components and circuits on it.
4. If you must move around the room or touch other surfaces before
installing a FRU, first place the FRU back in the antistatic bag.
When you are ready again to install the FRU, repeat these
procedures.

Identifying a faulted FRU in an InfiniFlex 44U cabinet

Use your fault identification and troubleshooting software to identify
the location of the faulted FRU.
If your storage system is mounted in an InfiniFlex 44U cabinet, with
front-to-back DAEs, you may need to open the drawer to service the
components within a DAE. Table 1 and Table 2 describe where each
FRU is located within a front and rear DAE and whether or not the
drawer needs to be opened to access it.

Shutting down
1. Shut down power to the LCCs server.
2. Shut down power to the DAE by unplugging the AC power cord.
3. Remove and label any other cables that were removed.

Removing the failed LCC

Removing the failed LCC

You can now remove the failed LCC. For InfiniFlex cabinets, you may
need to release the cable management arm and/or open the drawer
to access the failed LCC.
For LCCs installed in other racks, proceed directly to Removing the
failed LCC from the cabinet on page 8.

Releasing the cable management arm (InfiniFlex cabinets only)

If you are replacing an LCC on a rear DAE, you must complete the
following steps to disassemble the cable management arm:
1. Remove the velcro straps that fasten the cables to the
management arm.
2. Loosen the captive screws and pull the cable management arm
out of the way so you have access to the rear LCC.

Opening the drawer (InfiniFlex cabinets only)

CAUTION
To maintain the cabinets stability, do not extend more than one
drawer at a time.

EMI shield

1. Press the tabs on the EMI shield to remove them from the front of
the drawer (Figure 1).

Shipping brackets

Removing the EMI shield

Your InfiniFlex cabinet may have shipping brackets installed on the

front of each drawer. These brackets keep each drawer safely locked
in place.
Depending on which InfiniFlex cabinet you have, the drawer will
open in one of two ways:

If your drawer model includes shipping brackets, loosen the

captive screws and remove both shipping brackets from the front
of the drawer.
Pull the two latches located on the front of the rails directly
toward you to release the drawer from the cabinet (Figure 2).

If your drawer does not include shipping brackets, simply push

the two latches located on the front of the rails toward each other
and pull the drawer from the cabinet (Figure 3).
Continue pulling to expand the space between the front and rear
DAEs.

Follow these steps to remove an LCC:
1. Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, loosen the two captive screws
(Figure 4).
2. Grasp the finger pulls and remove the LCC from the cabinet
(Figure 4).
