Density and Positioning of Ties

WT2 Tie

This diagram shows the typical positioning and

density of ties for standard situations. BS5628:
Part 1 recommends that where both leaves of
a wall are at least 90mm, tie density should be
no less than 2.5 ties per square metre (900mm
horizontal x 450mm vertical centres). Where the
cavity width exceeds 75mm, building regulations
require the horizontal spacing to be 750mm
maximum, although all can vary if building regulations
require. Ideally the ties should be staggered and
evenly distributed over the wall area, except where
openings do not allow this to happen. Extra ties at
one per 300mm height should be used at the
vertical edges of an opening, unreturned or unbonded
edge and vertical expansion joints. In these cases,
the ties should be less than 225mm from the edge.
If insulation board is used in the cavity and restrained
by ties using insulation retaining clips, the horizontal
tie spacing may have to reduce to 600mm.

RELEVANT BRITISH STANDARDS: BS1243: 1978 Specification of Metal Ties For Cavity Wall Construction. This now largely out-dated standard has been superseded by DD140 in most respects. It specifies
the three traditional types of wall tie (i.e. vertical twist, double triangle and butterfly) and defines the shape, material and manufacturing tolerances for each tie.
BS5628: Part 1: 1992 Structural use of Unreinforced Masonry. This is the standard masonry construction code, providing recommendations on density, positioning, embedment and lengths of ties.
Building Regulations 2000 Approved. Document E: Resistance to the Passage of sound. Provides procedures for sound insulation testing and the measurement of dynamic stiffness of wall ties.
DD140: Part 2: 1987 Recommendation for the Design of Wall Ties. Provides recommendations for the design of wall ties for use in masonry and timber construction in the UK. Allows for the design
of new wall ties which are then performance tested to determine classification in accordance with end use. Classification type 1 to type 4 cover masonry construction. Ties must meet minimum
characteristic tensile and compressive force requirements noted in DD140
Building Regulations Approved Documents: 1995 BRE Digest 329: Installing wall ties in existing construction recommendations on density, positioning, embedment and lengths of ties.

WINCRO MOVEMENT TIES > VERTICAL MOVEMENT JOINTS

WINCRO MOVEMENT TIES

VERTICAL MOVEMENT JOINTS
At vertical movement joints the use of de-bonding sleeves on plain ended wall ties play a dual role, masonry
is allowed to expand or contract while at the same time the tie restrains the masonry against lateral wind loads.
The Wincro WDS de-bonding sleeves, are used at joints where there can be horizontal movement. Wincro
recommends that de-bonding sleeves are installed with a 10mm gap at the end to allow for expansion.
All structures are subject to movement after construction because of influences ranging from temperature
to ground movement and differential settlement. It is essential, therefore, that provision for movement is
made at the design stage, and that it is made bearing in mind the overall stability of the structure.

WINCRO FRAME CRAMPS > CRAMP FIXING APPLICATIONS FOR FIXING TO CONCRETE AND STEELWORK

WINCRO FRAME CRAMPS

CRAMP FIXING APPLICATIONS FOR FIXING TO CONCRETE AND STEELWORK
Wincros standard frame cramp has two outer 6mm diameter holes and one central 7mm diameter hole.
Different methods are recommended for use in fixing to steelwork and fixing to concrete.
When frame cramps are fixed to steelwork, the following is recommended:
Use a WBSD zinc-plated carbon steel self-drilling/self-tapping screw complete with a neoprene isolation
washer and a neoprene isolating patch between the frame cramp and the steel section. This eliminates
the possibility of bi-metallic corrosion.
When frame cramps are fixed to concrete the following is recommended:
Use a WBPS Plug and screw using either the 7mm diameter central hole or the two 6mm diameter holes
or use WBEB M6 expansion bolt through the 7mm diameter central hole.
Wincro recommend large plate washers should be used as this increases the tensile load capacity of frame cramps.
Please contact our Technical Design team for further guidance.

UNIVERSAL COLUMN TIE

11

UNIVERSAL COLUMN TIE

Wincros universal column tie is a simple and time-saving answer to tying masonry to steelwork.
It is better than the traditional bolted or shot-fired ties and cramps.
Benefits include:
4 different fitting options
Ease of installation with no fitting tools or equipment required
Allows for variation in coursing
Easy to handle
Excellent pull-out strength
Exceeds the requirements of DD140 for a Type 2 tie
Manufactured from high quality grade 1.4301 (304) stainless steel
Variation in notch sizes means the Wincro universal column tie can be slotted easily around the flange
of a column and so provide an effective restraint between the inner and outer leaves of masonry cavity walls.
Note: Where the tie is used with untreated mild steel structural steelwork, it is advisable to paint the flange
with a bitumen coat where the two materials come into contact.

WINCRO FASTRACK TIE SYSTEM

WINCRO FASTRACK TIE SYSTEM

The Fastrack Systems are designed to overcome common site problems in differential coursing when
using different masonry types/sizes or when one leaf of the cavity is built prior to the other. This method of
construction also eliminates the extra hazard of ties projecting from the inner leaf. A short lengths of WC28
Channel with one restraint tie welded to the rear of the channel is used in conjunction with a WT##C28
Channel tie, available in various outer fixing ends and lengths (see page 7-8 for selection).
Wincros Fastrack Channel and Ties are available in various lengths and exceed the requirements for
a Type 2 tie to DD140.

WINCRO HEAD RESTRAINTS

15

WINCRO HEAD RESTRAINTS

The Wincro WT75HR blockwork head restraint is designed to span a standard 215mm deep block, but can
be adjusted for block depths between 190mm and 275mm. It is made from high quality grade 1.4301 (304)
stainless steel and provides both a fast and economic alternative to traditional restraint methods such as
bolted angles and can eliminate costly fire protection.
It is designed to be built into the perpend joint at the head of non loadbearing, internal blockwork walls,
incorporating soffit movement and providing resistance to lateral loads up to 1.5kN.
Normally used at 900mm centres, it can be used with the WBEB M8 expanding bolt or with a Wincro channel
tie fixed into a Wincro WC28 or WC38 cast-in channel (see Channel and Bolt Fixings section). The Wincro
WT75HR can be also fixed to steel framework with a setscrew and using a neoprene patch to separate the
dissimilar metals.
The Wincro WT75BHR is a Universal Head Restraint and is designed to withstand a 1kN safe working load.
Positioning/spacings of the WT75BHR are normally at 600-900mm centres although this detail is normally
recommended by the Structural Engineer.

WINCRO SLIDING BRICK ANCHORS > WT75 SLIDING BRICK ANCHORS

WINCRO SLIDING BRICK ANCHORS

WT75 SLIDING BRICK ANCHORS
Sliding brick anchors are lateral restraint fixings which provide a mechanical tie between masonry cladding
panels and the steel or concrete frame where a movement joint is used. The anchor allows movement
between the masonry and frame structure as well as improving resistance to wind loadings. The anchor fixes
to the face or soffit of a structure and has one way or two way ties into the panel courses.
Wincros standard range of sliding brick anchors have a 350mm stem and will resist wind loads of up to
1.5kN. If required, longer stems can be provided, and while a wide range of head fixings is available, special
holes can be made to produce a bespoke product where required.
The stems fit within the cavity and take ties that can slide up and down to account for vertical movement.
All components are made from high quality type 1.4301 (304) stainless steel.

WINCRO STONE FIXING TIES & CRAMPS

WINCRO STONE FIXING TIES & CRAMPS

Wincro has developed a range of stone fixing ties and cramps to meet the every increasing demand for stone
clad features. The most appropriate stone tie will vary according to the type of cladding or features being used.
The selection of both ties and restraints should take into account both natural wind loads and any artificially
created loads, such as from window cleaning equipment.
Our Technical Design Team are available to discuss how best to meet your requirements, either from our
standard range or by the production of bespoke solutions for your particular application.
BS8298:1994 Design and installation of natural stone cladding should be consulted when making your
choice of ties and restraints.

WINCRO MASONRY REINFORCEMENT

WINCRO MASONRY REINFORCEMENT

Wincro masonry reinforcement has a number of applications such as providing additional strength to masonry
cladding panels, strengthening both inner and outer leaves of cavity walls and offering an alternative cavity
restraint fixing. The masonry reinforcement system permits larger cladding panel spans to be incorporated
and also gives the option of using narrower inner blocks than those used with un-reinforced panels.
Wincro has developed a range of welded Masonry Reinforcement to overcome structural problems as well
as crack control.
The Wincro Reinforcement range is available in high quality 1.4301(304) stainless steel and in a full range
of widths to suit any brick or block thicknesses.
BS5628 Part 2 recommends that stainless steel material should be used in external walls, including the inner
leaf of the cavity. Wincro can supply a suitable alternative to any Specified Reinforcement. If required design
calculations for approval can be submitted.
