WOMAN IN THE ILLUSTRATED PRESS OF THE KINGDOM

OF YUGOSLAVIA EXAMPLES OF CULTURAL IDENTITY
Summary: Illustrated press printed after World War I developed in accordance with
the political situation and the rise of mass culture. Emancipation of women was
among the hottest topics. In addition to images of desirable identification models,
press was full of idealized image of women. The glamorous stereotypes were set
opposed to photographs of women from conservative areas. Female members of
the royal family have been involved in the transmission of visual media messages.
Womens magazines supported the emancipation, on the one hand in the spirit of
liberal capitalism, and in the other in the spirit of communist ideology and antifascist struggle. The aim of this paper is to explain how the examples of different
cultural identities of women represent a compromise between support for
emancipation and her criticism and negation, and to emphasize the value of the
press, considering a specific society and climate.
