THE FIRST EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE

THESSALONIANS
PAUL HAS MANY PLEASANT MEMORIES of the days he spent with the infant
Thessalonian church. Their faith, hope, love, and perseverance in the face of
persecution are exemplary. Pauls labors as a spiritual parent to the fledgling
church have been richly rewarded, and his affection is visible in every line of
his letter.
Paul encourages them to excel in their newfound faith, to increase in their
love for one another, and to rejoice, pray, and give thanks always. He closes his
letter with instruction regarding the return of the Lord, whose advent signifies
hope and comfort for believers both living and dead.
Because this is the first of Pauls two canonical letters to the church at
Thessalonica, it received the title Pros Thessalonikeis A, the First to the
Thessalonians.

The Thessalonians Work ofFaith

Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto
the church of the Thessalonians which
is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus
Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from
God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 We give thanks to God always for you all,
making mention of you in our prayers;
3 Remembering without ceasing your work
of faith, and labour of love, and patience of
hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of
God and our Father;
4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election
of God.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in
word only, but also in power, and in the Holy
Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know
what manner of men we were among you for
your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of
the Lord, having received the word in much
affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
7 So that ye were ensamples to all that
believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
8 For from you sounded out the word of the
Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but

Both the labor or toil of work and the product
that results from the work are described by this
term. It is often used to simply mean deeds or
the actions that characterize a persons life. The
works of a believer are to draw others to faith
(Matt. 5:16), yet such works cannot save anyone
salvation is by faith alone through grace (Rom.

3:13 coming
(Gr. parousia) (1 Thess. 4:15; 5:23; 2 Thess. 2:1;
2Pet. 1:16) G3952: The Greek word parousia literally means presence. The word was commonly
used in New Testament times to describe the
visitation of royalty or of some other important
person. Thus the word signals no ordinary coming. The New Testament writers use the word to
describe Christs second coming, when He will
return to earth in His ultimate, glorious visitation
as the King over all.
4:2 commandmentsee Acts 16:24.

4:3 sanctification
(Gr. hagiasmos) (1 Cor. 1:30; 1 Pet. 1:2) G0038:
The Greek noun may refer to sanctification as the
active work that brings about holiness (2 Thess.
2:13) or to the result of that work, in which case it
might be translated holiness (Heb. 12:14). Interpreters debate which of these senses is found in
particular occurrences in the New Testament. At
its root (as that of related words rendered holy,
sanctify, consecrate, etc.) is the idea of being
set apart or consecrated to God and thus His. This
implies separation from moral defilement.

The Dead inChrist Shall Rise

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant,

that ye sorrow not, even as others which have

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose

will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of
the Lord, that we which are alive and remain
unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent
them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from
heaven with a shout, with the voice of the
archangel, and with the trump of God: and
the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain
shall be caught up together with them in the
clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so
shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with
these words.

verbs primary meaning is to snatch or to
seize (compare Jude 23, where the rendering is
pulling, as rescuing); a secondary meaning is
to steal or to plunder. This secondary concept of taking something by force is reflected in
Matthew 11:12. The word generally carries with
it the idea of force (though not necessarily violence) and often implies suddenness so that there
is no question of resistance (as here; see also Acts
8:39caught away). The typical usage in the
New Testament refers to a person being suddenly

refers to natural sleep (as Matt. 13:25) but is used
figuratively in 1 Thessalonians 5:6, 7 to indicate
spiritual carelessness and indifference (similarly
in Eph. 5:14). That translation can be problematic.
Most interpreters favor the euphemistic meaning

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE

THESSALONIANS
SINCE PAULS FIRST LETTER, THE seeds of false doctrine have been
sown among the Thessalonians, causing them to waver in their faith. Paul
removes these destructive seeds and again plants the seeds of truth. He
begins by commending the believers on their faithfulness in the midst of
persecution and encouraging them that present suffering will be repaid with
future glory. Therefore, in the midst of persecution, expectation can be
high.
Paul then deals with the central matter of his letter: a misunderstanding
spawned by false teachers regarding the coming day of the Lord. Despite
reports to the contrary, that Day has not yet come, and Paul recounts the
events that must first take place. Laboring for the gospel, rather than lazy
resignation, is the proper response.
As the second letter in Pauls Thessalonian correspondence, this was
entitled Pros Thessalonikeis B, the Second to the Thessalonians.

2:3 falling away

(Gr. apostasia) (Acts 21:21) G0646: The meaning
here is a falling away from the faith; the word is
used twice in the New Testament. The nation of
Israel fell into repeated backslidings (Jer. 5:6).
The prophet Jeremiah predicted the judgment of
God upon such disloyalty: Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall
reprove thee (Jer. 2:19). In the New Testament,
apostasy is generally defined as the determined,
willful rejection of Christ and His teachings by
a Christian believer (John 15:22; Heb. 10:2629).
This is different from false belief, or error, which
is the result of ignorance. The Day of Christ will
not come unless the falling away comes first,
and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition (2 Thess. 2:3). Some teach that falling away
is impossible for those persons who have truly
accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord.
2:7 mysterysee Luke 8:10.

2:8 wicked
(Gr. anomos) (Mark 15:28; 1 Tim. 1:9; 2 Pet.
2:8) G0459: The Greek word anomos literally
means without law. Thus the phrase here in
this verse, that Wicked, is depicting the man
of rebellion. Just as Christ embodies righteousness, so that Wicked will embody rebellion
against Gods righteous law. This figure is probably the same person described by John as the
Antichrist (1John 4:2, 3) and the beast (Rev.
13:1). With his open defiance of the sovereign
Ruler of the universe, this man is the embodiment of evil and the great opponent of Christ and
His kingdom.

The Lord Is Faithful

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the
word of the Lord may have free course,
and be glorified, even as it is with you:
2 And that we may be delivered from
unreasonable and wicked men: for all men
have not faith.
3 But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish
you, and keep you from evil.
4 And we have confidence in the Lord
touching you, that ye both do and will do the
things which we command you.
5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the
love of God, and into the patient waiting for
Christ.

Be Not Weary inWell Doing

6 Now we command you, brethren, in the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye with
draw yourselves from every brother that
walketh disorderly, and not after the tradi
tion which he received ofus.
7 For yourselves know how ye ought to
follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disor
derly among you;
8 Neither did we eat any mans bread for
nought; but wrought with labour and travail

1:15; Heb. 11:11) G4103: This word originally

comes from peith (G3982), to convince (see
2Thess. 3:4). It is used in an active sense to mean
one who believes in God or Christ and in the
passive sense to mean one who is dependable.
It is used to describe those who are reliable and
honest in business dealings (Matt. 24:45; Luke
16:11) or in relationships (1 Cor. 4:17). When used
in the phrase a faithful saying, this word means
reliable or trustworthy (2 Tim. 2:11; cf. Rev. 21:5).
Because God is utterly faithful to us, we can have
confidence in the complete trustworthiness of all
His promises.

(Gr. peith) (Acts 18:4; 28:23; Rom. 8:38; Phil.
1:6) G3982: This word is used in two ways. As an
intransitive verb it means to be convinced, to be
persuaded. In this sense it is used to describe
being convinced of truth by an argument (Acts
28:23, 24). As a transitive verb it means to convince, to pacify, to persuade. We read, for example, of Pauls confidence that God will keep His
promises (Phil. 1:6; 2 Tim. 1:12). In both uses a
change of mind is implied, resulting in an inward
certainty and trust.
