Q1. Answer the following :

a) In a coding scheme, If generator polynomial is g(D) =D3+D2+D+1 and the information word
s(D) = D19+D14+D9+D2+1, is it possible to detect 5 errors that occur in transmitting the code
word? If yes why or if no why?
(1M)
b) All laptops in a large city communicate using wireless communications from a high antenna
tower. Is the data link or network layer more appropriate? If the city is covered with a large
number of small antennas covering small areas, which layer is more appropriate?
(2M)
c) A 3 stage switch with 256 line input has a 1st stage switch with 16 inputs. How many 2nd
stage switches are needed for the switch to be non -blocking? How many cross points exist
in the switch, if the number of switches at any stage can only be of type 2L (L is an integer).
(3M)
d) Suppose an Internet Service Provider (ISP) has been allocated a pool of 56kbps modems at
the Central Telephone Office (CTO) and 1 T1 line is allocated for transport of data from ISP
to CTO. What is the maximum number of users that can be serviced by the ISP
simultaneously, if each user has a 56kbps modem and demands full data rate.

e) Framing in a DLC module uses (Hex) 7E as the flag. The bit sequence received at the peer
DLC module (in Hex form) is 7EEFBE7C7E. Perform flag removal & bit de-stuffing and get the
actual data in Octal form.

Q2. In a coding scheme, the information polynomial is s(D) = D9+D7+D5+D3+D+1 and the
generator polynomial g(D) = D5+D4+D2+1. Note that g(D) is obtained from a 4th degree primitive
polynomial. Then
a. Get the coded word and express as a string of digits
(6M)
b. If 2 errors occur in transmission, are they detectable at the receiver? If yes why and if no
why?
(4M)

Q3.
a. Give two features that the data link layer and transport layer have in common
(3M)
b. Give two features in which data link layer and transport layer differ
(3M)
c. Can a connectionless datagram service be provided by a connection oriented network? Give
reasons
(4M)
Q4. Calls arrive at a rate of 2 calls per minute to a 50 trunk telephone exchange. Each call is on
an average lasts for 25 minutes. You may assume Poisson process for the traffic.
a) What is the offered load in Erlangs by the callers.
(2M)
b) Find the blocking probability for this system. You may use the following judiciously. (6M)

c) What is the maximum arrival rate if the blocking probability is 1%.

Q5. In a Selective Repeat ARQ with frame length of nf and channel bit error rate of pb,
a. Find the optimum frame length that maximizes the transmission efficiency for a given bit
error rate.
(6M)
b. Find the optimum frame length for 1Mbps channel with 10ms reaction time, 25 Byte
overhead, 25 Byte ACK frame and pb = 10

Q6. An audiovisual real-time application uses packet switching to transmit 32 kilobit/second

speech and 64 kilobit/second video over the following network connection. The packet consists
of 10ms speech data followed by 10ms of video data. Each packet has a 40 byte header.
a) What is the percentage of each packet is the header overhead?
(2M)
b) The system is designed such that a packet cannot be sent until it has been filled and cannot
be relayed at a switch until it is completely received. Assuming that the signal propagates at
a speed of 1km / 5 microseconds, what is the delay involved in delivering 1 second of Audio
Video.
(6M)
c) Does this system ensure that the audio and video are synchronized at the destination? If
Yes how? If not how can it be handled by the destination play-out unit?
