Unlimited resources.
Little or no pollution or global warming emissions.

Renewable Energy Technologies (RET)

Renewable technologies are considered as clean sources

of energy and optimal use of these resources minimize
environmental impacts, produce minimum secondary
wastes and are sustainable based on current and future
economic and social societal needs
RETs provide an excellent opportunity for mitigation of
greenhouse gas emission and reducing global warming
through substituting conventional energy sources.

CHE190 RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES

Three categories of energy resources:

1.fossil fuels
2.renewable resources
3.nuclear resources

Renewable Energy Sources (RES)

Resources can be used to produce energy again and again

Supply 14% of the total world energy demand
Examples: biomass, hydropower, geothermal, solar, wind
and marine energies.
Also called alternative energy sources.

Provide energy services with zero or almost zero emissions of

both air pollutants and greenhouse gases

Lecture 1

Sustainable development requires methods and tools to

measure and compare the environmental impacts of human
activities for various products.

Consumption of fossil fuels is dramatically increasing along

with improvements in the quality of life, industrialization of
developing nations, and increase of the world population.
Fossil fuel: buried combustible geologic deposits of organic materials, formed
from decayed plants and animals that have been converted to crude oil, coal,
natural gas, or heavy oils by exposure to heat and pressure in the earth's crust
over hundreds of millions of years

CHE190 RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES

Increase in the rate of diminishing fossil fuel reserves/

excessive use of fossil fuel causes:
Impact on the environment (global warming CO2)
Increased health risks
Alarm on energy crisis
Promoting renewable alternatives to meet the
developing worlds growing energy needs

Society is slowly moving towards seeking:

More sustainable production methods
Waste minimization
Reduced air pollution from vehicles
Distributed energy generation
Conservation of native forests
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

RET development objectives

To improve energy supply reliability and organic fuel
economy
To solve problems of local energy and water supply
To increase the standard of living and level of employment
of the local population
To ensure sustainable development of the remote regions in
the desert and mountain zones
To implement of the obligations of the countries with regard
to fulfilling the international agreements relating to
environmental protection
