A visit to NGOs

On 19 th march

in the Early morning at around 8.30am

each of the group member departed from their house and

we all gathered together near ourcollege this was the day
where everyone was happy enough to visit the orphanages
since everybody has been visiting it for the first time.

After 15 minutes of walking,

we

finally

arrived

at

an

orphanage named ASHA DAAN

which is located in Madanpura.
(Byculla) The orphans knew
that we

were going to visit ,

they were happy enough and

were waiting
Yvoone,
ASHA DAAN

for us . Sister

Superintendent of
welcomed us. She then took us to her office

and gave a brief introduction about the NGO.

In her

conversation she said Asha

Daan is run by the mission
of the Sisters of Charity
House in Mumbai, a centre
founded

in

1976

by

the

Blessed Teresa of Kolkata, is to take care of

abandoned or physically and mentally disabled children as
well as AIDS patients. They also help the dying to leave this
world in dignity after being repudiated by their families
with no other place to go. The nuns have devoted their life
to the service of others, seemingly different people, who
have a right however to all the love, respect and dignity a
human life deserves.
In Asha Daan there are about a hundred children, boys
and

girls,

83

of

which

are

physically

or

mentally

handicapped, she explained. They range from 3 to 15

years of age, but they seem much younger. In some cases
mental disability reaches 90 per cent, but each one of them
is a treasure, a gift and a blessing.
Each life ought to be lived, Sister Yvoone said, even if it
does not meet utilitarian criteria or is not productive
according to todays models.
These children have been created to love and be loved.
They are a unique source of blessing for us, society and the
whole world, she said.
Children with physical and mental handicaps are not
vegetables, but children with special needs, she said.
They respond to acts of affection, physical contact; they

are unique individuals capable of communicating.

We know this as do the volunteers who work at the centre;
even if responses may just be slight signs.
We Sisters of Charity receive a lot for the service we
provide to the needy, said the nun, who has been in the
order founded by the Blessed Teresa of Kolkata for the past
40 years. As Mother Teresa used to say, show tenderness in
your face, eyes, smile and the warmth of your greetings!
You must show a happy smile. Dont just treat people; offer
your heart as well.

After the conversation we actually went in the hall of

orphanage where every children we saw were playing with
each other. No sooner they saw us few children came
running towards us and started playing with us the kids
were very happy. few of the little ones kept coming to us
and asking for chocolates but we were helpless as we were
not allowed to give and distribute anything. It was so
touching for us to see all these kids not wanted by their
biological parents. we asked few question to the children
and they replied to the question

very well. It was a very

memorable experience.
At around 11.30 am we left ASHA DAAN with tears in our
eyes praying to god for their bright future.

A visit to NGOs

We had our next appointment at 2.00 pm with COMMUNITY

OUTREACH PROGRAMME (CORP), which is located at
Mahim .it is a registered organization working in the
different slum communities of Mumbai. it began with one
centre in Dharavi and 3 staff. Today it is working in 13 slum
communities with 20 centers and staff of 70. They are
involved in community development programme with focus
on children and women. Their Vision is making Mumbai a
cent percent literate state, people to be free from
superstitious belief and aware about what's going around
them. Their Mission is thorough education to all and
through the process of each one teach one.Their Services
include Education, nutrition, health, self-help groups,
shelter for street children, vocational training.
The orphanage is home to more than 50 girls between the
ages of 8 and 16. There is also a separate facility for specialneeds children on the same property. Many of the children
at the orphanage lost their parents due to the murders,
bombings, and other violence. Others were orphaned by
disease or simply because their parents could no longer
take care of them, Nirmal (director) said.
Now, the orphanage is their home, with staff filling the role
of surrogate parents. The director of the facility tries to give
the children a normal life despite their circumstances. The

importance of education is stressed, and all the

children attend local schools. Even girls at the facility who
reach adulthood are allowed to remain at the orphanage
and attend college if they maintain good behavior,
Sharada(directors wife) said.
After the conversation was over we decided to play a game
with the childrens so that the toys which we have carried
can be given as gifts to the childrens as well as they can be
given some enjoyment. We started off by playing passing
the parcel as a game wherein every child had an
opportunity to come forward and show their talents. We
enjoyed a lot and we did notice that the caretakers loved
these children very much and have done their best to give
each the motherly love they lost when they were
abandoned.

At around 3.30 pm we left from there

towards our next programme which was
to visit ALL SAINTS HOME, which is
located at Dockyard.
All Saints Home was founded by All
Saints Memorial Chapel in 1986 to
provide residential nursing care in a Christian environment

In ALL SAINTS HOME we got an opportunity to interact

with old ladies where they taught us many
good values, which are necessary to lead
ones life. We met everyone and gave them
beautiful red roses. When We went in the
room of the oldest granny of ASH she
asked us to sing few songs and dance on
some music. She was very happy since
nobody has visited her place so long. It
was a very great experienced to be with them since few of
our group members recollected the memories of their own
grannys.
This was all with our day schedule. All and all, it was a
pretty amazing experience.
Sometimes you think that meeting with certain person,

Even right now, we are still smiling fondly of the
experience. We all worked hard, and prayed even harder, for
this to be a success and it did. Everyone left feeling happy
and with a smile on their face. That was more than what we
could have wished for..
