Success of Small Scale Industy

Introduction
Small-scale industries are the backbone of the Indian industrial
structure. Small scale industries (SSIs) constitute an important and
crucial segment of the industry sector. Promotion and growth of SSI
sector has been a cardinal feature of industrial policy. It plays a
crucial role in the process of economic development by value
addition, employment generation, equitable distribution of national
income, regional dispersal of industries, mobilization of capital and
entrepreneurial skills and contribution of export earnings.
Small scale industries play a key role in the industrialization of
developing country. This is because they provide large scale
employment and have a comparatively higher labour capital ratio.
The development of small scale industries is our integral part of the
overall economic, social and industrial development of a country. The
government has given due importance to this sector of the economy
to eradicate mass poverty and to ensure a better standard of living for
the people.

other.

To tap talent resources like entrepreneurial

ability hoarded wealth etc.

Factors Responsible For The

Success of Small Scale
Industries Unit:
Project Feasibility:
Every project to be set up or established has to be planned
first. The paln should be genuine, practical and one capable
of implementation. A project is the result of its viability or
feasibility study supported by a project report. The project
report

must

be

comprehensive

blue

print

of

the

entrepreneurs ideas and proposals in the form of concrete

venture and his future visualization of the unit. In short a
small scale industry before its establishment must be in the
form of a clear-cut picture in the mind of the entrepreneur.

Production:
At the start of the operation it must be seen whether the
product is a fully developed marketable one. If this is not so

Success of Small Scale Industy

the entire planning work carried by the entrepreneur will be
of no use. For ascertaining the fact whether the product will
be sold out or not an extensive market research, product
research and consumer research has to be conducted. At
the same time material planning and inventory control, flow
of production process etc. is to be done.

Planning:
Without planning a business activity undertaken will be a
failure. Planning helps in obtaining and maintaining a sound
information system with regard to business to cost of
production in short term as well as long term periods. Thus
cost approach of planning help in laying down pricing policy
for the products.

Entrepreneurship:
An entrepreneur has to possess a dynamic personality and
a broad perspective of problems pertaining to any specific
business

activity.

Entrepreneurship

creates

boldness,

foresight and a spirit of adventure in a person. He has to

learn the ability to hold on, whatever be the odds.
In order to seek probable solutions to problems one has to
undergo

particular

training

with

another

trader

or

businessman and closely observe the problems that arise in
different situations and the ways in which they are tackled.
A small-scale unit, though eligible for different kinds of
help, assistance and concessions from the government and
other institutions, still presents a number of difficulties and
obstacles which entrepreneur should know to overcome.

Marketing:
Marketing is of great importance and the entrepreneur
must thoroughly assess its present size for the product and
the possibilities of its future expansion. He must take into
account the presence of competitors in the market and then
accordingly determine his pricing policy. Other aspects
relating to marketing are distribution, quality control,
delivery schedules, sales promotion, dealer aids, etc. On the
basis of this study he has to decide about the necessary
promotional campaign. A proper co-ordination has to be
maintained between production and sales departments in
order to ensure the outlet for the goods produced.

Resources:
Although an entrepreneur can raise loans from the bank it
is advisable that he obtain loans from other sources which

Success of Small Scale Industy

would not carry the burden of interest. As far as possible
professional investors would be kept out of the scene. As a
result entrepreneurs profits would not shrink.

Labour:
Labour management is not an easy task. It requires many
personal qualities to be possessed by a labour officer, if the
small scale unit is a one man show it is the entrepreneur
who has to tackle all labour problems and keep his task
force content.

Finance:
Generally initial investment comes from certain outside
agencies, viz. bank. When sound support develops between
the bank and the entrepreneur it becomes easy to convince
the bank authorities regarding his needs, plans and
problems.
An overestimation of the anticipated help from the bank
may go against the entrepreneur and his enterprise. His
goal should not be to obtain maximum finance but to get
appropriate finance.

Success of Small Scale Industy

Personnel Relations:
It is necessary to maintain sound personnel relations which
would include just and fair remuneration to the employees,
various incentives for workers, healthy working conditions,
and favorable environment and so on.

Product Quality:
The products produced by the small scale units must
maintain a constant level or standard of quality as standard
quality products solve half of the marketing problem.

CONCLUSION
After doing a lot of research work on SSI we come to a
conclusion that One way to measure business success is to
assess the performance of individuals, which in turn could
serve as an input to estimate an organization's current
overall performance as well as future performance.
Business success is examined from three perspectives,
namely learning and growth, financial, and internal
business process. Learning and growth is measured by
employees' satisfaction, the financial aspect is measured by
increases in company assets, and the internal business
process is measured by increase of production volumes,
improvement of physical working condition, and business
expansion.
The Research Model
The variables included in the study are shown in Figure 1.
