Can we still save Mother Earth?
Research Question:
Can the United States efficiently use solar energy to generate more than 50% of the nations
energy?

Hypothesis:
With improvements to come current sources of renewable energy and long term plans that cut
down on carbon emissions, most of the energy generated in the future can be from renewable.

Background/History of Issue:
Recent concerns about the future of animals and our environment has raised questions about our
planet. The emission of carbon pollutants and other greenhouse gases are only a small part of the
devastation caused by humans in the past 150 years. With depletion of natural resources and land
destruction, the future of human survival looks dreary. Ocean pollution and other hazardous
wastes have caused other animals to go extinct or be currently be endangered. Not only have we
caused devastation to the future of our survival, but the future of other animals. All of these
problems can be solved with renewable energy sources. It solves problems with greenhouse
gases and the destruction of land, because the energy can be reused over and over and over again.
Solar panels efficiently use sunlight to make clean, renewable energy. Wind mills can use the
breezes and calm wind to generate clean power. Hydroelectric power by using water behind a

dam to generate power behind the dam. Using renewables sources can help decrease the
environmental hazards caused by humans today.

Rationale:
I feel that this issue on environmental hazards and the concerns about the future of the planet are
very important because the future of the ecosystem depends on what we do today. With new long
term plans that support renewable energy and laws that cut down on carbon emissions, 80% of
the energy of the nation can be generated by renewables. The idea of preserving and conserving
land and resources first came from Teddy Roosevelt who laid the foundation for future
generations that care about the environment and starting a generation of concerned people about
the nature of the environment and the creatures that live in it. This seems normal today, but this
is possible because of the actions taken a century ago. We can do the same thing by applying
laws and agencies today to support the energy for the future.

Basis of Hypothesis:
I focused my hypothesis mainly on the amount of energy produced by renewables that is
compared to the amount produced by the non-renewables. I also focused it on the new laws and
agencies that are making it easier to use solar panels around the world, and more specifically in
New York city. This allows me to use the information and news today, to make a prediction and
see the future of renewable energy. Also it makes sure to allow me to see the growth of solar and
other renewable energy as the years go on. Compared to the last decade, the growth of renewable
is more than 200% and is currently as the future approaches. In addition, the information I found
supports my hypothesis because it shows an improvement of 80% in the near future based on our
laws and agencies today.

Operational definitions:
Improved environment: Compared to the past, the amount of toxins and hazards produced are
taken into account more than in the past
Animal endangerment decreasing: with better environmental laws and agencies, the care for
animals will increase, which will lead to more animal growth
Descriptors used for literature speech:
Agencies and laws that support renewables
Amount of energy produced by renewables.
