Poetry Analysis

We have read and analyzed numerous poems as a class. Now you will select a poem and go
through the same process on your own.
Directions: Research and select a poem written by one of the possible authors. Answer the
questions based on your selected poem. Your responses must be typed and in complete
sentences. Use part of the question in your answer. Make sure to provide appropriate examples
to support your ideas and explain your answers clearly. Each response must be 2-3 sentences.
Number your answers. Attach a copy of the poem to your assignment.
Possible Poets: William Blake, Robert Burns, Sandra Cisneros, E.E. Cummings, Emily
Dickinson, Robert Frost, Pablo Neruda, Gary Soto, Walt Whitman, William Wordsworth
Poem Requirements: Poem must be at least 12 lines long
Points: 15 points
Due Date: Feb 3rd
Questions:
1. Summarize the poem. What is it about?
2. Explain the purpose of this poem. Why did the author write it?
3. Identify the type of poetry this poem falls into.
4. Does this poem have a rhyme scheme? If so, what is it?
5. Identify, give examples, and explain three literary techniques in the poem. Example:
alliteration, simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, etc.
