Introduction
Theusualapproachinscienceisreductionistic,i.e.,thewholeisreducedtoitsparts.Thepartcanisolated,quantified,
anditsactiontested.Thus,biomedicinewouldstudytheactiveingredientsinordertounderstandtheactionofthe
wholeplant.Inholisticmedicine,ontheotherhand,thegreatestvalueisplacedonunderstandingandtreatingthe
wholeorganism.Likewise,itissupposedthatthewholemedicinalsubstance,saytheplant,issuperiortothe
fragmentedpartstheconstitutethewholeplant.

MethodsofStudy
1.Thewholeplantcanbetreatedlikeapersonality.Inordertounderstandthewholeplant,ratherthantheisolated

wholeandthatthiswholecanhaveattributes.Inotherwords,theplantisnotjustaslurryofdifferentchemicals,but

Wearenotusedtothinkingofplantslikethis.Wedonotthinkofthemasbeingindividualentitieswithspecifictraits.
Thismakesitsoundtoomuchliketheplanthasorisapersonality.This,however,isexactlywhatweneedtolearn.

3.Plantpropertiesandmorphology.Amongtheoldmethodsusedtodiscerntheessentialnatureoftheplantisthe
doctrineofsignatures.Thisiswidelydismissedaschildsplayinconventionalscience,butIfindthedoctrinetobe
particularlyhelpful.Thesignatum,ifrightlyunderstood,reflectstheinnateenergypatternorpersonalityoftheplant
veryclosely.AsRudolfSteinerexplains,thesignaturerepresentsabunchingupofenergyinresistancetoexternal
environmentalstresseswhich,inahumanbeingwouldcauseadisease,butwhichinaplantcausesadaptationresulting
inadistortionorchangeofstructure(WilhelmPelikan,1997,12).Thesignaturethusrepresentsthestresstheplant

thinking.Asamatteroffactweneedtocultivatethepoeticfacultyorimaginationtooftentimesseethesignatureand
thisisbasisfortruemagicalthought.Wemightjustaswellcriticizesuchpeoplefortheirmaterialisticthoughtbut
suchargumentsarecircular.
Closelyrelatedtothedoctrineofsignaturesarethephysicalpropertiesoftheplant,suchaswefindthroughour

Asweanalyzethepropertiesandconstituentsoftheplantwenaturallyfindaneedtoexpressthesepropertiesin
generalterms.Thisgivesrisetothedoctrineofenergetics.Thus,plantsaredividedintotwocategories,hotandcold,
suitedtothetreatmentofcold,stagnant,depressedconditionsandhot,overexcited,irritatedonesrespectively.Further
categoriesincludedampanddry.Dampnessmaybefurthersubdivideintodampflowing(whichrespondsto

JoakimBockemuhl,andMargaretColquhoun.Byunderstandingtheshapeofaplantthroughitsdifferentperiodsof

Thestudyoftherelationshipofaplanttoitskinisalsoimportantbecausetheremaybearelationshipbetween
themedicinalconstituentsandpropertiesintheplantanditscloserelatives.Whenthereisnotwhencloserelatives
