HISTORY

Mitchelton winery was established in 1969, though the site where the winery is situated has a history
dating back to 1836. This makes it relatively younger to many other top wine brands of Australia. It was
in 1978 that Mitcheltons Blackwood Park Riesling won its first trophy.
Since then, Mitchelton has won a number of awards for its wines and vineyards since its inception. It
remains committed to sustainable, eco-friendly farming practices. In 2011, Ryan Family took over
Mitcheltons business. Mitchelton also organizes a number of events, such as weddings, functions and
conferences at its estate. It operates a caf, a cellar door and a restaurant.
Mitchelton became the most successful exhibitor at Victorian Wine Show for 1987-88 and Don Lewis
was named Victorian Wine-maker of the Year, a feather in the cap considering there were many other
top contenders for this award.
Just 3 years later, in 1991, Mitchelton wines won two trophies- one for Vineyard of the Year at
Victorian Wines Show and other was Jimmy Watson Trophy for its signature 1990 Mitchelton Print
Shiraz wine. In the year 1994 and 1995, Mitchelton won Victorian Winery Tourism Award.
In 2005, Print Shiraz attained distinguished rank in Langtons Classification. In 2007, Airstrip Marsanne
Roussanne Viognier won the trophy for the Best Rhone White at London International Wine
Competition.

VINEYARDS

The vineyards of Mitchelton bear the influence of Goulburn river which has given this region a unique
grape growing capability for all these years.
Mitchelton Estate In Mitchelton region the grape growing industry has a long history, with some of
the oldest Marsanne and Shiraz vines of the world being grown here.
Airstrip Rock- This is another vineyard where the shiraz wine grapes are grown. This piece of
land is 100,000 years old and is characterized by ochre colour subsoil due to effects of oxidation of
iron.
The Crescent Block- This is another block of land where the oldest shiraz wine grapes were
planted. Print Shiraz wine is made from the grapes coming from this region.
Clarks Block- This area is reserved for growing Riesling variety of grapes. The soil in this region
has more clay which retains more water. Therefore, the vines growing here in rainy winter months are
not able to get oxygen. In summers, the root penetration is difficult due to hardness of clayey soils.
Limerick Lane This vineyard is close to Mitchelton estate vineyard and spans about 4 hectares. Shiraz
was selected to be grown on selected parcel of alluvial soil, producing consistent Shiraz.
Heathcote The vineyard is made entirely of Shiraz plantings and covers an area of 10 acres.
