CABLE
Definition:1. A conductor for transmitting electrical or optical signals or electric power.
2. A cable is two or more wire bound together which may be bare or covered or insulated.
BASED ON CONSTRUCTION:
1. coaxial cable
2. twinax cable
3. twisted pair cable
4. fiber optic cable
5. power cable
6. insulated cable
7. shielded cable
8. extension cable
9. Submarine communications cable
BASED ON VOLTAGE:
1.Low Tension (L.T) cables - up to 1000V
2.High Tension (H.T) cables- up to 11000V or 11KV
3.Super Tension (S.T) cables - up to 33000v or 33KV
4.Extra High Tension (E.H.T) cables - from 33KV TO 66KV
5.Extra Super Tension power cables - beyond 66KV
Insulating materials:
a. Oil-impregnated paper
b. Vulcanized India rubber(V.I.R)
c. Polyvinyl chloride(P.V.C)
e. Cross-linked polythene(XLPE)
f. polyethylene(PE)
G.EPR insulation
Based On Conductor:
1. Copper conductor
2. Aluminium conductor
Cores of Conductors:
A cable may have one or more than one core depending upon the type of service for which it is
intended. The conductors are made of tinned copper or aluminum and are usually stranded in order t
flexibility to the cable.
Insulation:
Each core or conductor is provided with a suitable thickness of insulation, the thickness of layer depe
the voltage to be withstood by the cable. The commonly used materials for insulation are impregnate
The insulation of wiring cables until recently was almost exclusively PVC. However significant quantit
varnished cambric or rubber mineral compound.
surface & fume (LSF) materials are now being employed. Other exceptions are that ethylene-propylen
(EPR) & silicone rubber
(SR) are used for cables installed in very heat pr very cold situations where the temperature is out sid
of PVC.
PVC insulation is usually of general-purpose type compounded to have a higher tensile strength, bett
to deformation and better electrical properties than the sheath.
Inner sheath:
In order to protect the cable from moisture, gasses or other damaging liquids (acids or alkalis) in the
atmosphere, a metallic or PVC sheath is used.
Bedding:
Over the metallic sheath is applied a layer of bedding, which consists of a fibrous material like just, o
tape. The purpose of bedding is to protect the metallic sheath against corrosion and from mechanica
armouring
Armouring:
Over the bedding or inner sheathing armouring is provided which consists of layers and Galvanized s
steel tape. Its purpose is to protect the cable from mechanical injury while laying it and during the co
handling. Armouring may not be done in the some cables.
Serving / Outer sheath:
It may not be out of place to mention here that bedding, armouring and serving is only applied to the
the protection of conductor insulation and to protect the metallic sheath from mechanical injury.
In order to protect armouring from atmospheric conditions, a layer of fibrous material or PVC type is p
the armouring. This is known as serving.

IEC 60332-3-24 - The number of test pieces required to provide a total volume of

The cable specimens are placed vertically next to each other and then exposed to
the charred or affected portion should not exceed a height of 2.5 meters.
IEC 60754-2 specifies a method in determining the degree of acidity of gases evo
by measuring pH and conductivity. This standard requires the weighted pH value
weighted value of conductivity should not exceed 10S/mm.
The 3 meter cube test (also known as IEC 61034) measures the amount of smok

connected to recording equipment in the window on the other end. A fire is then
recorded. A minimum light transmission value greater than 60% is acceptable.
Oxygen index (limiting oxygen index) is the most widely used fire parameter in th
of oxygen in an oxygen/nitrogen mixture in which the material will burn.
Air contains 21% oxygen and it is often stated that material with an oxygen index
