Alice Springs Hospital
You know the theory about Aboriginal Health, now come and see it for yourself. Alice Springs Hospital is the only major
hospital covering a catchment area of ~1,000,000 square km, which is literally Bigger than Texas. We care for some of the
nations sickest and most socially disadvantaged people, many with diseases not seen elsewhere in the country.
Spectacular national parks surround Alice Springs. The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities and the
arts. The central desert region of Australia is unique. It is a friendly, welcoming place especially suited to trainees with a
sense of adventure and those interested in fourth world health issues, not generally seen by most doctors in Australia.
Medical recruitment officer: MedicalRecruitmentASH@nt.gov.au or
Ms Judith Martinez | Tel: +61 8 8951 7777 | Email: Judith.Martinez@nt.gov.au

Paediatric Registrars
We have 7 registrar positions, one of which is a community registrar position funded under the ESTP scheme. We offer
trainees: Exposure to Aboriginal Health/ a spectrum of diseases you have probably only read about/ severity of diseases
unlikely to be encountered in major cities. You will have opportunities to better understand the nexus between social
environment and disease/ visit remote communities and retrieve patients with the RFDS/ complete community and rural
training requirements for general paediatrics/ complete projects/ accept increasing responsibility for patient management.
We provide good consultant cover/ commitment to teaching and supervision/ a good roster. Preference will be given to
candidates seeking 12 month appointments.
Working in paediatrics at Alice Springs is challenging. At times the work here is hard and confronting. The flip side is
that it offers opportunities to make a difference to patients lives which you probably dont get in many places. This is an
unparalleled training opportunity.

suburb of Darwin overlooking the Timor Sea. The hospital has an active and successful basic physician training programme

at Royal Darwin Hospital. Dual training across two disciplines often general medicine and another specialty is actively
encouraged and supported. General medicine trainees also have the opportunity to rotate through immunology and
neurology at advanced training level. The general medicine outreach position to remote communities has been a popular sixmonth rotation as part of the general medicine advanced training programme but is also open to other subspecialty trainees
wishing to gain general medicine experience in a remote setting. The public health general medicine rotation for advanced
trainees is also a unique and valuable training opportunity.
Exposure to a broad and fascinating array of pathology in the midst of tropical Australia with a strong emphasis on
indigenous health has attracted many dedicated trainees to Royal Darwin Hospital over the years.
Basic Physician Training Basic Physician Training commences in PGY2 year and medically streamed RMO positions are
competitive. In keeping with the tradition of true generalism trainees who wish to retain a broad focus in their junior years are
also encouraged and supported in seeking terms in other disciplines and encouraged to pursue remote work before moving
into more medically streamed positions prior to sitting the physicians examinations.
Registrar positions are available to applicants from PGY3 and PGY4 years on
Specialty rotations at RMO level include general medicine, nephrology, cardiology, intensive care, infectious diseases, RAPU,
oncology and haematology. Rotations through paediatrics, obstetrics, emergency medicine and remote general practice etc.

Specialty rotations at basic physician trainee registrar level include general medicine, cardiology, respiratory, nephrology,
neurology, intensive care, oncology, palliative care, Katherine District Hospital, addiction medicine, and geriatrics.
The Victorian Educations programme is available through RDH; there is a weekly departmental teaching programme, multiple
journal clubs including a well-attended weekly general medicine journal club.
For exam candidates there is a mock written exam and extensive clinical exam preparations sessions leading up to a formal
mock viva.
All trainees have the opportunity to bulldog for the clinical exam in the year before they sit the exam themselves, as Darwin is
a clinical exam site.
Due the remote location of RDH all trainees sitting the exam are encouraged to attend one of the written exam preparation
courses the year before they sit for the exam. Those candidates who are progressing well with their study preparation will be
prioritized for leave at this time.
