beenamazedbytheglassesfree3Dscreen1.Ifyourelikeme,yourfirst
thoughtafterholdingitwasWow,the3Dcameraonthisthingsucks,I
wonderhowIcangoaboutgettingpicturesfrommytwinned7.1MPCanon
A570CHDK/StereoDataMakerrigonthisscreen?Well,today,Ibringyou
theanswer.
First,youneedtoturnyour3DimagesintoMPOfiles.MPOisthe
relativelynewdefactostandardimagetypefor3Dcameras.Itswhatthe
FujiReal3Dseriesusedandwhatthe3DSuses.AsIunderstandit,MPO
standsforMultiplePictureO2,andthefileisessentiallyjusttwoJPEGs
gluedtogether.Thisfileformatwascreatedbecauseapparentlysimply
usingastandardsidebysideJPEGformatstereopairthatcouldbeopened
andviewedandeditedbyanyimagemanipulationsoftwarepackagemade
since1996andthatstereoenthusiastshavebeenusingforyearswasjust
toolimiting.Anyway,thetoolIdrecommendforconvertingyourimagesto
MPOsisStereoPhotoMaker.SPMisabundleofcompleteawesomenessin
azipfile,andifyouwanttodoanythinginvolving3Dphotography,you
wantSPM.3
Thistoolcandoalotofthings,butonethingyoullwantittodoforyouis
resizetheMPOimagesto640480.Yeah,thatstiny,butthatsthenative
resolutionofthe3DScameras,soitsthesizethatthe3DSisusedto
dealingwith.The3DScurrentlydoesnothaveanykindofzooming
support,soevenifyougowithahigherresolution,itsnotgoingtodoyou
anygoodatall.AllitlldoiswastealotofspaceonyourSDcard.When

youlookatyourpicturesonthe3DS,everythingwilllookjustfine.
Anyway,onceyouveturnedyourtraditionalstereopairsandturnthem
intothesenewfangledMPOfiles,youllquicklydiscoverthatyoucant
actuallyseewhatsinthefile.ThatsbecauseWindowsdoesntunderstand
whatanMPOfileis,soitrefusestorenderthumbnails.Asalways,
someoneontheInternethasalreadysolvedtheproblemforyou:Thisguy
hascreatedsomeregistryfileswhichtellWindowsExplorerthat.MPOfiles
arereallyJPGs,soWindowsExplorerwillhappilyrenderthumbnailsfor
you,andyoullnolongerbeblind.
Okay,so,youvegotatonofMPOfiles,nowyouneedtogetthemontothe
3DStoviewthem.Youhavetoputyourimagesinacertaindirectoryand
nameyourimagesacertainwayorthe3DSwillgetconfusedandrefuseto
showthem.Imnotexactlysurewhattherulesare,butIvehadfairlygood
luckwiththeDCFStandardfornamingfilesandfolders.
Files:CCCC####.mpo,whereCisanalphanumericcharacter(including
_),and####isafourdigitnumberbetween0001and9999.0000
cannotbeused.

Bynow,youvegivenyourfilesanapprovednameandstuckthemina
directorywithanapprovedname.Yourealmostthere.Takethatdirectory
andcopyittoanSDcard,undertheDCIMfolder.Idrecommendusinga
spareSDcardthatyourenotafraidtowipeclean,ratherthanthecardyou
typicallyuseforthe3DS.4Iddothisstepwithjustahandfulofimagesto
startwith,justincaseitdoesntworkthefirsttime.Yourfilesshouldnow
beontheSDcard,underapathsimilarthis:

EverytimeIdothis,the3DShastofigureoutwhatinthehellIvejustdone
toit.Ithinkitsreadingthedirectoryandproducingthumbnailimagesor
somethinglikethat.Idontreallyknowwhatsortofcrazinessisgoingon
behindthescenes,Ijustknowthatwhenyougiveitoverathousandfiles,it
takesawhiletogetready.First,itllsayPreparing,thenitwillhave
toUpdatetheManagementFile,andbothofthosestagescantake
upwardsofseveralminutestocomplete.Justbepatientanditlleventually
work.

(OrnotHaveImentionedthateverythingyoudowiththisinformation,
youdoatyourownrisk?Ihaventhadanyproblemswiththis,norwiththe
testingandexploringIdidpriortofindingsomethingthatworked,butthat
doesntmeanyouwontrunintoissuesthatIdidnthave.Andifyoudo,
thoseproblemsarebetweenyouandyourlocalNintendoAuthorized
ServiceCenter.IfNintendohadwantedustoputourown3Dimagesfrom
othersourcesonthe3DS,theywouldhave,youknow,madeiteasytodo.I
