Introduction

Three fundamental areas of Engineering

Mechanics: statics, dynamics, and strength of
materials.
In Engineering Mechanics (statics and dynamics):
- bodies are assumed to be rigid
- bodies are in equilibrium
- bodies are accelerated but can be put in
equilibrium by applying inertia forces.

Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

Internal effects include:

Strength of Materials or Mechanics of Materials
- bodies are non-rigid, deformations are of major
interest
- properties of materials affect the choice and
dimensions that will satisfy the requirements of
strength and rigidity
Mechanics of Deformable Bodies is a branch of
Engineering Mechanics which deals with the
study of the external and internal effects of
forces and environmental factors on deformable
bodies.

A safe and successful design of

structures or objects must address the
following 3 mechanical concerns:

Why study Mechanics of Deformable Bodies?

Strength : The object or structure is strong

enough to withstand the loads and perform
properly under repeated loadings.
Stiffness : Deflection or deformation is negligible
so that it can perform its intended function.
Stability : The structure/object will not bend or
buckle out of shape at some increased loadings.

To ensure that the designed objects and

structures are safe against the maximum
internal effects that may be produced by any
combination of loading.

Deformation or change in shape

- deflection
- compression
- tension
- bending
- twisting
- shear
- shrinkage or expansion

Support Reactions

REVIEW OF STATICS

if the support prevents translation in a given direction, then a

force must be developed on the member in that direction.
Likewise, if rotation is prevented, a couple moment must be
exerted on the member.

External Loads:

concentrated loads
axial loads

uniformly
distributed loads
W

uniformly varying load

moment or couple
body weight

The best way to account for all the forces is to

draw the free-body diagram (FBD).

Internal Forces

Draw the FBD and find the support reactions

at A and B.

A body responds to the application of external

forces by deforming and developing an
Internal Force System.

Draw the FBD. Find the support reactions in A

and tension force in the cable. P = 8 KN.

Investigation of internal forces are done using

Method of Sections.

Internal Forces:
N
= Normal force or Axial Force.
Represents the pulling or pushing
action perpendicular to the section.
V = Shear forces. The total
resistance that causes the two
segments of the body to slide over
one another. Shear forces lie in the
plane of area.
T = Torque. Resistance to twisting
about an axis perpendicular to the
area.
M = Bending Moment. Causes the
body to bend about an axis lying
within the plane of the area.
