Dear Diary,
Today was a busy day, I had a Mathematics and Geography test. The Mathematics
test was not too difficult but the Geography test was quite challenging. After school
finished I had lunch with my friends Dina and Anisa. We ate at the canteen.
Then we attended the Music Club meeting. Our teacher advisor said that he would
like to enter our Club for an inter school singing competition. All our club members
were very excited and everyone gave suggestions for songs we should sing. After
the meeting, I went for netball practice.
I was quite tired by the time I got home. After taking a shower I rested for a while.
Mother needed my help to cook dinner. I cooked the rice and stir fried the
vegetables. After dinner I sat down to do my homework. I had English and Science
homework. It took me two hours to finish my homework.

Rangers Seek Police Help

Kota Kinabalu: Wildlife rangers have sought the help of police to investigate the shooting of
a male pygmy elephant near the Felda Umas oil palm plantation.
Sabah Wildlife Department assistant director, Dr Nathan Raj said the elephant had suffered
for two to four days before it died in the area, about 70km from Tawau. He said a post
mortem conducted by the wildlife rescue units veterinary team, found that the elephant had
a small wound in the abdominal area and a shotgun pellet lodged in the left lung. He said
yhe shot entered the abdominal area and penetrated the intestines, causing serious internal
bleeding before being lodged in the lung.
lt is quite sad as the elephant did not die straightaway and probably suffered for several
days, Dr Nathan Raj said, adding that the elephant was 18 to 25 years old.
Tawau Wildlife Department officer Soffian Abu Bakar urged those with information to come
forward as it was an offence to kill the protected pygmy elephant.
State Wildlife Department director Datuk Dr Lawrence Ambu said the elephant was among a
few in the area identified by the department to be translocated to forest reserves.
The elephants in Felda Umas have been an ongoing issue for the villagers. We have so far
transferred more than 15 elephants from this area. The elephant that was killed was one of
the few remaining in the vicinity of the plantation that was awaiting translocation. He said.
Dr Lawrence Ambu said s similar problem occurred in the Telupid district.
Recently a group of about 25 elephants made their way to almost a kilometre from Telupid
town. We have already translocated eight elephants and are moving the others. Even areas
like Pensiangan and Saput, Which have never seen the presence of elephants, are now
facing a serious elephant-human conflict, he said
Dr Lawrence Ambu said translocation was expensive to carry out. lt can cost up to
RM30000 to transfer one elephant. In some cases, just a few weeks after a group of
elephants was translocated, they end up going into other human populated areas, causing
problems there, he said.

Teachers' Day
13

Every year, all schools throughout Malaysia celebrate Teachers' Day - a day to
honour and remember our teachers who are our leaders and who guide us in our
education during our youthful days.
Teachers are very much a part of a student's life as they influence a child, right from
Kindergarten days to Upper Secondary days; and perhaps beyond. It is they who
prepare the child for his or her life in society.
Teachers' Day is held to show our appreciation to our teachers who work hard and
bear patiently with us. In most schools, pupils bring gifts of flowers, presents and
other tokens, which are sometimes hand-made, to show that they care for their
teachers. A party is held where tasty refreshments and drinks are served in the
classroom for both the teachers and the students. Everyone has a good time and the
day ends earlier than usual.

Teachers play a very important role in the development of a child. However, their
effortsare seldom appreciated. That is why Teachers' Day is so significant to
teachers; it is only on this day that they are appreciated and honoured for their
deeds.

14

Teachers' Day
One day every year, we celebrate Teachers' Day in honour of the teachers who
spend so much time teaching us so many things.
This year, Teachers' Day began with a school assembly in the hall where the
headmaster delivered a speech. After that we adjourned to our classes, not to have
lessons, but to enjoy ourselves.
My classmates gave a small party for the teachers who taught us. Each of us
contributed a small sum of money to buy cakes, drinks and other titbits. On that day
we arranged the chairs and desks so that they surrounded an empty space in the
middle of the classroom.
So began a round of eating, drinking and playing games with the teachers. Most of
the teachers were very sporting and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was so
different from having lessons.
The other classes gave parties too. So the teachers had to move from class to class
and participate in the fun. I would think that this was quite tiring on the part of the
teachers but they managed it. After all it was their day to enjoy and have fun.
One class even gave a short play for their teachers. I did not get to watch it as I was
busy tidying up the classroom after the party.
All in all it was a great day. The whole school was immersed in an atmosphere of
gaiety. So when the school bell rang for dismissal I felt a little sad that it should end,
but end it must. The day was over and we went home tired but happy.
