team sports

Big UnderstandingsUnderstanding the conditioning

principle of proper warm up and cool
down can help us prevent athletic
injuries

Objective- The student will

understand and implement a warm
up and cool down routine to
participate in a team sport activity
Assessment Evidence- The student will demonstrate knowledge by
completing a quiz at the end of class regarding major concepts of warm up
and cool down reviewed in class

Opening Hook- Class Discussion. Who has played a sport in the past?
Anybody got hurt while participating? Why do you think those injuries
happen? How could those injuries be prevented?

Input- Lecture (PowerPoint presentation if possible) regarding warm up

and cool down
Importance of warming up and cooling down to prevent injuries
Physiological effects of running for a warm-up
Proper muscular stretching techniques
Modeling- Model different common muscular stretches used in sports
Guided Practice/monitoring- Students will be directed to participate in a
warm up and cool down routine at the gymnasium
Check for Understanding- Students will have 3 min to participate in a
class discussion regarding our lesson. Questions? Comments? Doubts?
Teacher will also ask questions randomly to check for understanding
covering all major points of lesson

apply rules and procedures that are
designed for safe participation in
team sports
Objective- The student will review
athletic equipment used in sports to
prevent injuries

Big UnderstandingsUnderstanding the importance of

athletic equipment in injury
prevention can help us prevent
catastrophic injuries while
participating in team athletic
activities

Assessment Evidence- The student will solve sports equipment

worksheet

Opening Hook- Bring a football helmet to class, pass it around and ask
the question Why do you think professional athletes use helmets in some
sports?
Input- Lecture (PowerPoint presentation if possible) regarding athletic
equipment
Importance of athletic equipment in sports
Examples of athletic equipment that help prevent injuries
Video (sports athletic equipment)
Modeling- Show athletic equipment (football helmet, shin guards, knee
pads, mouthpieces, and gloves)
Guided Practice/monitoring- Students will be asked to fit equipment
and participate in a 5 min volleyball and 5 min soccer activity (students will
fit equipment according to sport being played)
Check for Understanding- Students will have 3 min to participate in a
class discussion regarding our lesson. Questions? Comments? Doubts?
Teacher will also ask questions randomly to check for understanding
covering all major points of lesson
Materials/Resources- Gymnasium, Football helmet, shin guards, knee
pads, mouthpieces, and gloves.
Grouping Patterns- Whole Class, Groups of 6 for volleyball and soccer
activities

Ending, Summary/Reflection- Snowstorm

Students write down what they learned on a piece of scratch paper and
wad it up. Given a signal, they throw their paper snowballs in the air. Then

TEKS- The student will anticipate
potentially dangerous consequences
of participating in team sports
Objective- The student will
recognize the risks of athletic
participation

Big UnderstandingsParticipation in athletic activities can
