Mormon Missionaries Everywhere!

I live in a town which is a suburb of Phoenix Arizona called Mesa. And Mesa is a
town that is chock full of Mormons. Now I dont know a lot about the whole
Church of Latter Day Saints thing, and I guess I dont really care one way or the
other. I have my beliefs, but Im not going to try to push my beliefs on other
people. These Mormons kind of take a different approach though.

At some point in their teenage years all of the Mormon boys are required to go on
some sort of a mission. You have probably seen these kids out wandering in
neighborhoods or riding their bikes. They are always in a pair.
And they are always dressed in a nice pair of black dress slacks and white shirt
with a tie and a nametag. I hear that underneath their nice clothes they have to wear
some kind of special underwear too which they call Jesus jammies.
Now Im not honestly sure what they do on these missions. Obviously it is about
trying to recruit new Mormons, but other than that Im in the dark. Im not being
racist here, but I only see white males doing these missions. Do they recruit
Mormons from other races? Who knows? I do know this though: these kids doing
their missions are all over the place here in Mesa.

One Response to Mormon Missionaries Everywhere!

I live in a City called Mesa that is situated close by Phoenix, a different city,
and also to Chandler, Gilbert, and Tempe.
If you wanted to know about Mormons and Mormonism then you should ask
a Mormon, and it ought not to be too difficult to find one that will pass the
time of day with you and answer your simple questions, for, as you have
observed, Mesa is a [City] that is chock full of Mormons.
I am a Christian that exercises his Christianity in The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints [Mormon] and have been for many years and I will
answer as many of your questions so that you need be puzzled no longer.
You are right when you intimate that Latter-day Saints are not backward at
coming forward to spread the Good News about Jesus Christ and his latterday activities, because we believe that the Great Commission given by Jesus
prior to the Ascension has not been repealed and is incumbent upon Latterday Saints to do as his apostolic college did in the first Christian century, and
following.
You are right that Latter-day Saint young men on reaching the age of
nineteen are expected to serve a full-time mission as representatives of the
Church of Jesus Christ and as latter-day Ambassadors of Jesus Christ.
They leave their homes and families for two years and are called to serve in
any one of about 200 missions world-wide, often having to learn a new
language, sometimes more than one.
These young men [it is disparaging to refer to them as 'kids'] will have been
saving their pocket money and part time earnings since they were old
enough to walk so they can serve missions, and support themselves by
buying for their own food, clothing, transport, etc during their period of
missionary service.
Without any special training for the ministry apart from six weeks in one of
the Missionary Training Centres scattered throughout the earth, they bear the
message that Jesus Christ is the Son of God the Eternal Father, that he
suffered, bled, and died for our sins on the Cross of Calvary, that he was laid
in the tomb but on the Third Day he rose from the dead into a newness of
life to live forever with God the father, and he it is that made salvation
obtainable through the grace of God and the Redemptive sacrifice of the
Saviour Jesus Christ.

The some sort of mission that you mention is likely to be the most
important work these young gentlemen ministers ever do, because they have
responded to a divine call to bear the glad tidings of salvation wherever there
is a need.
In preparation for their missions, they do not smoke, drink, womanise,
swear, gamble, steal, use drugs, swear, cuss, have wild parties.
They honour their parents, live their religion, are kind, loving, helpful, and
cultivate all the characteristics required of Christians according to the New
Testament texts.
Their mission is to bring people to Christ so that Christ who is the Way can
bring them to God. This ought not to be taken lightly.
At this moment, around 60,000 young men are serving missions, including
one of my Great-Nephews [Philippines], a Grandson [Scotland], and another
Grandson [Oklahoma City].
They have risen to the level of their high and holy calling, are quitting
themselves like the men they are, and set aside personal interests to
unselfishly serve the people of the world.
I have served three missions for the Church and if my wifes and my own
health was good we would love to serve again.
Our missionaries are conservatively and smartly dressed because their errand
from the Lord merits the best that is in them.
As for your Jesus Jammies, I dont know where you found that bit of
irreverent nonsense, for in sixty [60] years as a Latter-day Saint I have never
heard any but contentious anti-Mormons speak in such derogatory language
about sacred things.
There are missionaries in the mission fields today that are from the
Scandinavian countries, northern Europe, Russia, the Balkan States, western
and eastern Europe, Mongolia, China, Japan, the British Isles, Many African
countries, the Middle East, India, Polynesia, Burma, The Hindu Kush,
Nepal, Micronesia, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA, Central and
South America, etc.

As to their colour and ethnicity, you might not have seen them, but serving
full-time missions we have Native Americans, Black and White Africans,
Egyptians, Hispanics, Latinos, Indios, Greeks, Turks, Lebanese, Jews, West
Indians, Bahamanians, and people of every colour under the sun that are
called to serve the people of the world by preaching the Gospel of Jesus
Christ.
If you would like me to introduce you to a multi-ethnic mix of Missionaries
right here in Mesa, I will be pleased to do so.

May God bless you and keep you in His light.
