Course
Structure
Graduate courses are usually conducted in the evenings from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm from
Mondays to Fridays.
In the M.Sc. (IP Mgt) programme, students can expect some classes on Saturdays (typically
from 9.30am to 12.30pm) for some of the Grad. Cert. in IP Law modules.
The general course structure for all M.Sc. programmes is shown in Table A (page 3). Students
may either take a general course leading to a M.Sc. degree in their chosen discipline or choose
an area of specialization (where available). The areas of specialization are shown in Table B
(page 4).
Registration
Exemption of
Modules
Applicants who are Grad. Dip. (Env Eng / Aviation Mgt / Maritime & Port Mgt) holders and/or
former M.Sc. students who withdrew from their course of study and who wish to be considered
for exemption of module(s) in their new M.Sc. candidature must apply in writing through their
respective Departments Office only after they gain successful admission to their new M.Sc.
programme.
Applicants who meet the minimum requirements of an average of 55% in Grad. Cert in IP Law
will automatically be exempted from the GCIP modules upon successful admission to the
M.Sc.(IP Mgt) programme.
Pre-taken
Modules
Please note that any modules taken to meet the requirements of one degree cannot be used to
count towards another degree.
NUS B.Eng. or B.Tech. graduates may apply for a transfer of credits of their approved pretaken* modules read during their undergraduate studies to their current M.Sc. studies in NUS.
The pre-taken modules should be graduate modules and certain Level 4000 modules which the
Department allows to be counted towards the M.Sc. programme requirements.
Modules pre-taken (maximum of 5) should be read less than 5 years prior to admission of their
M.Sc. degree and are not counted towards their Bachelors degree. Upon approval, the pretaken modules and grades will be transferred and included in the CAP computation of their
current M.Sc. programme. All applications for transfer of credits must be submitted to OGP
within the 1st month of their new M.Sc. candidature.
*Pre-taken modules must be indicated in the transcripts of academic records for their Bachelors degree
(i.e. B.Eng. or B.Tech.) and not included in the Bachelors degree CAP computation.
Professional
Development
Units
For each M.Sc. module read by a M.Sc. student who is a member of the Professional Engineers
Board Singapore (PEB), 39 Professional Units (PDU) may be awarded under the Professional
Engineers Board Singapore's Continuing Professional Development Programme (CPD).
Selection of
Modules &
Class TimeTable
Information on available modules for each semester and class time-table will be issued by the
DEPARTMENTS to candidates who are successful in gaining admission to the courses.

Notes :
CAP - Cumulative Average Point
MC - Modular Credits
GP - Grade Points
All letter grades (including Grade F) are computed in the CAP computation for M.Sc. students who have
yet to accumulate 40 MCs. Students who have achieved more than 40 MCs, the CAP is computed on the
best modules equivalent to 40 MCs (inclusive of foundation/core modules, where required).
The English Language requirement, where relevant, is in addition to the coursework requirements.
Graduate English courses are excluded from the CAP computation.
Documentary
Evidence
All required supporting documents should be attached to the completed application in hardcopy
for submission. Certificates submitted in a language other than English must be accompanied by
a translated and certified copy. All supporting documents (original & photocopies) submitted by
candidates will not be returned. Further documentary evidence may be requested at a later date.
Original official transcript, or its certified true copies, of candidates with qualifications other than
those from NUS would be requested at the point when offer of admission is made. This should
be sent directly from the issuing University to NUS in a SEALED envelope with its flap bearing
the security seal of the university and the signature of the Registrar or representative.
TOEFL and
IELTS Tests
The quantity and quality of academic work at NUS cannot be accomplished without the mastery
of the English language. The point is deliberately emphasized because graduate students at NUS
submit assignments, take written examinations and are expected to participate actively in
classroom discussions. Applicants who graduated from Universities where English is not the
main medium of instruction (e.g. China, Myanmar, Indonesia, etc) are required to demonstrate
their English proficiency by means of TOEFL* / IELTS** test scores.
Applicants who graduated from English-medium Universities may be required to sit for the
TOEFL/IELTS test, at the discretion of the Faculty of Engineering, so as to assess their
suitability for university study.
Applicants are expected to check the Acknowledgement Slip/Email sent to them as to whether
they are required to sit for TOEFL/IELTS test. Those who are expected to do so, please submit
the originals/photocopies of their TOEFL/ IELTS scoresheets by the stipulated date.
*TOEFL is the abbreviation for the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
**IELTS is the abbreviation for the International English Language Testing System.
The minimum score expected is:
i. 600 (for TOEFL paper-based test) or
ii. 250 (for TOEFL computer-based test) or
iii. 92 (for TOEFL internet-based test) or
iv. 6.5 score for IELTS (Academic).
The examining authorities for the respective tests are:
TOEFL:
IELTS:
Other tests (including the TOEFL Institutional Test) and those that claim to be predictions,
estimations, equivalents, simulations, etc. of the TOEFL or IELTS are unacceptable. The
TOEFL score or IELTS result is only valid for 2 years after the test and should be valid at the
beginning of the application period for the designated M.Sc. degree.
6
Diagnostic
English Test
(DET)
Successful candidates whose TOEFL/IELTS scores fall within the following ranges must register to
take the Diagnostic English Test (DET) conducted by NUS Centre for English Language
Communication (CELC) :
i. 580 TOEFL paper-based test < 600
ii. 237 TOEFL computer-based test < 250
iii. 85 TOEFL internet-based test < 92
iv. IELTS (Academic) = 6.0
Candidates who do not achieve an expected proficiency level upon taking the DET will be required
to read and obtain a satisfactory grade for the assigned English Course(s) conducted twice weekly.
Classes are available both during the day and in the evening. Subject to availability, part-time students
will be given priority to register for evening classes. Further details will be provided upon successful
admission.

for admission to pursue graduate programmes on a full-time basis. For candidates who are not
on any scholarship or sponsorship (e.g. companys), their application must be accompanied by
documentary evidence to show their ability to support themselves financially (i.e. estimated
expenses of S$25,000 a year in Singapore). As such, applicants are to provide either:
a bank statement indicating a balance of at least S$25,000 or its equivalent in savings / fixed
deposit account(s); or
a letter of confirmation and financial statement from a sponsor [e.g. bank statement of
sponsor indicating a balance of at least S$25,000 or its equivalent in savings / fixed deposit
account(s)].
This amount is based on the minimum period of one year taken to complete the programme on
full-time basis. In addition, candidates must also ensure that they have the financial means to
see through their programme of study, in terms of paying for their tuition fees, other related fees
and living expenses, for their entire programme of study. Candidates who require more time to
prepare themselves financially for their graduate studies (e.g. tuition fees, living expenses etc)
are encouraged to apply for admission in the subsequent intake when they have enough means
to see through their programme of study.
Please refer to the section on 'Guide for International Applicants' (pages 44 & 45) for details on
immigration matters, accommodation and estimated cost of living.

DEGREE REQUIREMENT
A candidate needs to pass at least 10 modules (40 modular credits) and achieve a minimum cumulative average point
(CAP) of 3.0 in order to graduate.
Additional module requirement applies if candidates decide to opt for a specialisation.
The English Language requirement, where relevant, is in addition to the coursework requirements. Graduate English
courses are excluded from the CAP computation.
Upon completion of the degree requirement, candidates will be able to graduate with a Master of Science (Electrical
Engineering) degree.
MODULES
Candidates are expected to take graduate level modules offered by the Department to fulfil the M.Sc (Electrical
Engineering) degree requirement.
Within the above requirement though, candidate may choose to take up at most 2 modules offered from other departments
(graduate modules without EE prefix code or undergraduate level 4 modules) and may have it count towards the M.Sc
(Electrical Engineering) degree. Application for such modules will be subject to the general guidelines and Departments
approval. Candidates should note that the final composition of modules taken is subject to approval, as it must always
reflect a degree in Electrical Engineering.
It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that he/she meets the pre-requisite requirements (if any) for the modules
concerned.

The Master of Science (Geotechnical Engineering) programme, or M.Sc.(Geotec), is hosted by the Department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering.
A candidate must successfully complete a programme of study with at least 40 Modular Credits (MCs), comprising:
(a) 28 MCs from the list of core modules; and
(b) the remaining MCs from the list of elective modules
In addition, a student must obtain a minimum CAP of 3.0 (Grade B-) for the best modules equivalent to 40 MCs, inclusive
of the core modules. Furthermore, the grade point obtained for each of the 7 core modules must be at least 2.5 (Grade C+).
A student is allowed one re-take for at most two core modules if the grade point obtained is less than 2.5 (Grade C+). A
student must also obtain satisfactory progress during his/her candidature.
Generally, students are not allowed to retake a module which they have read previously (e.g. during their B.Eng.
candidature). However, where a student has taken a core module of the M.Sc.(Geotec) programme during his NUS
B.Eng./B.Tech degree programme and obtained a grade below C+, the student may, subject to Departments approval, be
allowed to retake the module and it will be counted as his/her second attempt at that module.

Students are expected to complete CE5111 in one semester. Request for extension will be approved on a case-by-case
basis and only with valid reasons (which exclude heavy work commitment). Extension, if granted, is limited to one
semester, and students who fail to complete CE5111 in two semesters will be given a grade F and will have to repeat the
module.
2
CE6102 requires two pre-requisites/co-requisites, namely CE4257 and CE6101. In other words, students need to have
taken CE4257 and CE6101 in a previous semester or are taking them in the same semester as CE6102. Otherwise, the
system will not register him/her for CE6102. In terms of contents, CE6102 will draw heavily from CE4257 and CE6101.
For this reason, students are advised to take CE4257 and CE6101 as early as possible in their study.

IMMIGRATION MATTERS
International students who are successful in gaining admission to their respective full-time M.Sc. programmes must note
that their offer of admission is conditional upon the successful application of their Students Pass.
The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has implemented a web-based system for Students Pass application
called the Students Pass Online Application & Registration (SOLAR).
When full-time International students have been offered admission to our programmes, the University will proceed with
the Students Pass application via SOLAR and also write to inform candidates how to complete the application process
at their end. After candidates complete the application through SOLAR, ICA will process the application.
For candidates from countries which require a visa to enter Singapore (details can be found at
http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=96&secid=94), the University will be applying for the visa cum Students Pass
via SOLAR. If the Students Pass application is approved, the In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter, which also serves as a
single-journey entry visa, will be sent to the relevant candidates. This letter and the valid passport must be presented to the
Duty Officer at the immigration checkpoint upon arrival in Singapore.
For candidates from a non-visa required country (e.g. Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), candidates can collect the approval letter
at the point of registration with the University.
On your arrival in Singapore, you will be given a Social Visit Pass for a minimum of 2 weeks at the airport or point of
entry. You may be asked to show your Letter of Offer of Admission. After registering as a student and obtaining your
student registration card, you must apply for a Students Pass at least 4 working days before the expiry of your Social Visit
Pass at one of the following centres :
1.
2.
Some applications for Students Pass may take a longer duration to process. In some instances, the processing time may
take up to 6 weeks. For such situations, the candidates Social Visit Pass will be extended by ICA accordingly.
Please note that spouses and/or children of International M.Sc. students are not sponsored by the University for their visa
applications. Application of their Social Visit Pass (SVP) has to be made directly at the Visitor Services Centre, 4th floor
Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and a bond is required. The amount of the bond is to be established by ICA.
Student must have already obtained a Students Pass issued by the ICA at the time of application. A local sponsor
(Singapore Citizen/Permanent Resident) is required in order to apply for a SVP for spouse and/or children. The SVP
granted will normally be for up to a maximum period of 6 months. It is renewable, subject to ICAs approval.
Details on immigration matters can be found at the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority website at http://www.ica.gov.sg .
