Method
Visually inspect the instrument for damage, free movement and the condition of the internal jaw faces. For
micrometers, ensure the correct operation of the ratchet mechanism.
For Calipers, close the jaw faces and hold up to light to ensure the parallelism of the jaw faces. For
mechanical calipers and micrometers, check the zero
Allow instrument and the reference gauge blocks to stabilize in calibration environment for at least 3 hours.
Compare and record actual instrument readings to that of the calibration gauge blocks. Choose incremental
sizes to cover at least four positions over the working range of the instrument.
Record details of any adjustments made during the calibration.

Estimate of Uncertainty of Measurement

The following uncertainties of measurement have been derived for this procedure. Details of the calculations of these
values are held by the Quality Manager. The table shows the uncertainty of measurement for the calibration to the above
procedure and also estimates for the uncertainty of measurement for working use of the instrument based on a single
measurement or where a mean of three measurements are used. The later figures are applicable for use in calculations of
the uncertainty of measurement of test methods in which these instruments are used.
