(Aerodynamics II, EndSem Exam)

ERITREA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

AERODYNAMICS II (AEEN 411)
EndSem Exam.
Total Marks 100
Answer all the questions and dont mix-up Part-A and Part-B answers.

Part A (Marks: 10 x 2 = 20)

1.

Write the formulae of standard mean chord and aerodynamic mean chord.

2.

Draw a wing plan form with taper but no sweepback and also draw a wing plan form with
sweepback but no taper.

3.

There exists a Mach wave in a supersonic flow with Mach number 1.35 before the Mach
wave. What will be the Mach number of the flow after the Mach wave? Will this value
increase or decrease if the Mach wave is replaced by an oblique shock wave?

4.

Define wind tunnel. Write the name of main components of a subsonic wind tunnel.

5.

Explain the use of diffuser in a wind tunnel?

6.

Define circulation and write its relation with coefficient of lift.

7.

Define induced drag. Also write its expression in the terms of lift.

8.

Explain the effect of adverse pressure ratio and favourable pressure ration in the airflow over
a solid body..

9.

Draw a sample case of oblique shock showing free stream and after stream Mach numbers
and so the wave angle as well as deflection angle.

10. Describe the difference between Mach Wave and Normal Shock Wave

Part B (Marks: 5 x 16 = 80)

11. Draw a sample shock polar and describe how it can be used for solving the shock related
problem. Also show in the graph the normal shock solution, oblique shock solutions and
Mach wave solution.

12. Derive the lift equation for a double wedge airfoil when angle of attack is less than half
wedge angle. Also draw the pressure distribution over the surfaces in such case.
8+4
Find the lift for double wedge airfoil of wedge angle 16 deg. and acting at an angle of attack
of 5 deg.
4
13. Draw a closed circuit wind tunnel and mention all its main parts. Also explain the use of
guiding vanes.
6+2
A wind tunnel has test section area of 0.6 m2 and its contraction cone has area ratio of 2.5. A
wing model in the test section feels a lift of 750 N while its plan form area is 1.1 m2. PTO

(Aerodynamics II, EndSem Exam)

If the velocity of the wind at the blower location is 32 m/s and if there are no losses in the
circuit; find the coefficient of lift of the airfoil. Assume that flow is incompressible and fan
is working at sea level condition.

14. For a compressible flow, derive the velocity potential function and linearise it.

16

15. Define Mach cone and the Mach angle. Draw a sample Mach triangle and show the Mach
angle in the picture.
4+4
An airplane is cruising at an altitude of 1 km. The noise of its engine is heard by a listener
standing on the ground when the airplane has passed the listener by 1.8 km. Find the speed
and the Mach number of the airplane. Also find the Mach angle of the Mach cone so
formed. Assume the velocity of sound to be constant at sea level condition.
