CONVENTIONS OF GENRES

ACTION

ADVENTURE

Lighting usually is quite light for the hero figure and

can go dark to show the villain in the film. There are a
lot of jump cuts used in these films because there is
so much action that using jump cuts make it seem
more dramatic than it actually is. Its also easier to use
small cuts and put them together because with action
and with stunts things can go wrong and as they are
quite dangerous they arent done so much. Also
actors arent used for these stunts they usually have a
doppelganger who looks like them to do it so using
short clips and putting them together so that you
cant see the actors face as clearly.

Usually are set in exotic places. Some adventure films

are fiction so stuff wouldnt be real and would be
made using computer graphics in which actors have
to act in a way that they are imagining the person or
object is there. Thats why close ups of the real life
stuff is used to ensure that they can film something
solid that is actually there. They also use zoom outs a
lot to show the scene as the scene always plays a
huge part in adventures. Characters also do a lot of
action type stunts and fight scenes so a green screen
may be used or stunt doubles.

COMEDY

ROMANCE

The setting is always in a bright place. The

camerawork is naturalistic. Diegetic sound
like dialogue is always clear so that the
joke is clear and isnt missed by the viewer.
Non-diegetic sound is also used to place
emphasis on certain scenes. Pre-recorded
sounds, like the sound of crowds laughing,
or comedic sounds, like the stereotypical
drums and bangs, are used.

Typically set in pretty settings like countrysides,

beaches etc. The sound used is always
dependant on the mood for example if the
characters are sad, sad music will play. Soft,
calm music is always stereotypical because it
sounds romantic. Diegetic sound might be used
if characters are going to see a concert or
singing/ playing an instrument to each other.
Non-diegetic sound is used when music is
played over a scene in the background. The
song usually reflects characters feelings.

DRAMA
It always has real life situations exhibited so it is
set in casual places. There is always conflict
portrayed. Have lots of climaxes and anticlimaxes to keep the tension levels high and
keep people interested. Lots of dull lighting and
close ups of characters to set the scene using
pathetic fallacy and also to show the expression
on characters faces to show their emotion.
Dramas always have intense music playing in
the background when dramatic scenes are
occurring.

HORROR
Usually set in isolated places. Colours are
usually dark like blacks or red to signify
danger or death. Lighting is used to scare
the reader like it would go dark and silent
and then something would jump out onto
the screen to scare the reader. Sound and
music usually starts off light and then to
build suspense it starts getting louder and
louder.
