Ms. Rucker
2016-2017
Course Description:
This English Language Arts class is designed to increase their communication skills through reading,
writing, speaking, and the study of the English Language. Our primary focus in ELA will be mastery of
different writing styles, demonstration of rules of grammar and writing conventions, and the ability
express yourself orally.
This course will enable students to read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts including novels, short
stories, dramas, poetry, and essays. These writing pieces will model the different writing styles students
will be working on themselves. Writing assignments will include journal writing, essays, critiques, and
creative pieces. Vocabulary and grammar assignments will also be an important part of the course.
Because we are a community of learners, please also expect to work periodically in group situations and
to present information to peers in groups or individually.

Class Expectations
P.R.I.D.E is what our day centers around here at the middle school. Perseverance, Respect, Integrity,
Dependability and Engagement are characteristics that we as a family at Braddock Hills Middle School
hope to exhibit every day. The expectations for this course reflect the schools PRIDE.
Perseverance:
Students are expected to encourage others and never give up. The phrase I
dont know is never an acceptable answer.
Respect:
Students are expected to treat everyone (and their ideas) with respect at all
times.
Integrity:
Students are expected to show self-respect and self-discipline each and every
day. Academic honesty is also expected; therefore, students giving or taking
information from others will receive a zero on the assignments and given an
office referral.
Dependability:
Students are expected to give 100% and make no excuses. Learning from
mistakes and moving on
Engagement:
Students are expected to be in their seat and prepared for class when the bell
rings. Being prepared for class means all materials (agenda, ELA notebook,
binder, books, pens/pencils, etc.) are out and ready.
