MULTIPLICATION DRILL TO DEVELOP MASTERY SKILLS AMONG
GRADE IV PUPILS OF WEST CITY CENTRAL SCHOOL , prepared and

Abstract

Lack of fluency with multiplication is a significant impediment to fluency


with multiplication and division. The Grade 4 learners experienced the so called
difficulty that is why they are required to develop mastery in multiplication for
them to be able to perform well in mathematics. According to study published by
Ofsted, pupils without instant recall of multiplication struggles in math.It is
important that pupils have the tools of mastering multiplication skill. Without that,
it is like sending a plumber out to do a job without knowing how to use a spanner.
The researcher came up with this study to develop the multiplication mastery
through the use of window cards as daily drill.
This action research used the descriptive survey method to assess the
mastery of multiplication skill among Grade 4 pupils of West City Central School.
Based on the results of the diagnostic test, for an average of 50 pupils in each
class, it was found out that 35 of these pupils in every class showed a low
performance level in multiplication. These pupils had difficulty in solving
mathematical equations dealing with multiplication. The intervention of using
window cards as daily multiplication drill will help to improve the multiplication
mastery of the grade 4 pupils.

I. School Problem
Assess Stage
Step 1. Get Organized (Go)
Background
It is vital that all children can grasp and master arithmetic while they are
still at primary school. If they fail at this early stage, the risk is they will never
catch up. According to Nick Gibb, It is important that pupils are fluent in
calculation and have learnt the multiplication skill before they leave primary
school. The fluency of multiplication is an essential prerequisite to success in any
mathematical problems.
Drills are used successfully when teaching pupils technique. For instance,
when young people are learning their multiplication tables, they can do drills on
each number set to help them memorize, they can then proceed to more difficult
concepts that use the information obtained from drills. Drills are useful to
reinforce and practice more rote knowledge and skills.
Window cards are tools to develop and enhance the multiplication skills
among Grade 4 pupils. Through daily drills, pupils get to master the skill that will
help them to solve any mathematical problem.

Step 2. Talk with the customer


The clientele of this research were the Grade 4 Onyx and Grade 4 Topaz
pupils of West City Central School. This set of pupils performed less in the
diagnostic test evaluation in Mathematics. These pupils got below 75% mastery
level.
The researchers conducted interview to the following pupils and parents to
find out possible reasons why low score were obtained.
The following were the responses of pupils towards low scores in
mathematics:
Kasukaon ko kung makakita ug numero.
Maglabad akong ulo basta math na!
Boring ug lisud kaayo ang math.
Mahadlok ko kay dili ko kamemorize sa multiplication table.
Dili ko kabalo ug anser.
The following were the parents responses towards mathematics:
Magcomputer diretso pag-abot sa balay.
Ipadaplin ang notebook.
Walay panahon magtudlo kay busy sa negosyo.
Tulog na ang bata pag-abot nako.
Dili ko kabalo sa math.

Step 3. Walk the Process


To develop the mastery of multiplication, the researcher decided to use
drill cards as daily routine before the formal class started. Daily drills and
practices were conducted for the first three months to test the liability of the tools
used (window cards) that would lead to mastery.
For the three successive months, the researcher observed that there was
an increase of scores in every pupil. The researchers also found out that pupils
were encouraged and motivated to get higher scores the next time that another
drills conducted.

Step 4. Identify Priority Improvement Plan


The researchers found out that the use of window cards are helpful in
developing the mastery of multiplication skill among grade 4 pupils.

The researchers were able to find out the root cause why 35 out of 50
pupils cannot master the multiplication skills:
More time spent on online games
No parents follow up
Low diagnostic test results
Lack of interest
Insufficient tools for mastery
Step 6. Develop a Solution
The researchers solution to the problem was full implementation of the
daily use of Window cards to develop mastery in multiplication among Grade 4
pupils.
