PERSONAL PRONOUN

1. Definition
A personal pronoun is a pronoun (a word that functions as and acts as a
substitute for a noun or nouns) that represents a grammatical person within a sentence.
While personal pronouns often do indicate an actual person, they can also refer to
animals, inanimate objects, or even intangible concepts.
2. Type
Personal pronouns can be simply defined as the type of pronouns used to
replace a specific noun in a sentence. It can be used to take the place of a person, an
animal, a thing, or a place, in order to avoid stating the same noun over and over again
in the same text.
In a sentence, a personal pronoun can be used in place of a noun that is
mentioned earlier in that sentence. You should also know that personal pronoun can
have two functions. They can act as either the subject or the object in the sentence.
With this, it can be further categorized into two kinds: The subjective personal
pronoun (used as the subject) and the objective personal pronoun (used as the direct
object, indirect object, or subject of the preposition).
In order to use personal pronouns effectively and avoid confusion, you must
make sure that the personal pronoun that you will use agrees in number.
(Singular : I, you, me, she, he, it, him, her)
(Plural : You, they, we, them, us)
(Gender : Feminine, masculine, neuter)
(Person : First person, second person, third person)

3. Cases of personal pronoun


Personal pronoun can have two cases:
1. Nominative case : berfungsi as a subject or subject complement.
2. Subjective case : berfungsi as an object.
Nominative Case

4. Pembentukan personal pronoun
Untuk menyusun kalimat, kita tinggal menerapkan pembagiannya diatas, misalnya
membuat kalimat dengan susunan Subjek + Verb + Objek :

I love them (saya suka mereka)


Perlu diketahui Possessive adjective harus diikuti noun
Seperti susunan Your dad, his friend dan my book
Dalam contoh kalimat berikut :
Your dad and his friend took my book on the table
Possessive pronoun tidak memiliki pasangan, artinya dia tidak
dipasangkan dengan kata apapun.
Perhatikan kata Mine, yours dan hers
This book is mine
Yours is bigger
Do not take hers

5. Examples of Personal pronouns and explanation


Subject Pronouns
In the following examples, the personal pronoun is used as the subject of the
sentences. The subject is the person, animal or thing that does the action shown by the
verb. The words, I, you, he, she, it, we and they are called subject pronouns
Examples:
He has bought an ice cream
She works in the bank
They went to the playground
(He, she, they) are the subject pronoun

Object Pronouns
The words me, you, him, her, it, us and them are also personal pronouns for people,
animals, places or things. They are called object pronouns. The object pronoun is used
as the object of the verb. It is the person, animal or thing that receives the action
shown by the verb.
Examples:
Can you please give the things to me?
Everyone is looking for her
Tell them to be careful
(Me, her, them) are the object pronoun
Give, looking, tell are the verb.

Personal Pronoun can be classified as :


First person (which refers to the person speaking) : I, we
Second person (which refers to the person being spoken to) : you
Third person (which refers to the person being spoken about) : he, she, it, they
6. Function of Personal Pronoun
The main function of personal pronoun is to take the place of a noun in a
sentence. It can be used as a subject or an object (direct, indirect, object of the
preposition) in a text (speech and can serve as a good way to help you avoid repetition
as specific nouns. This, it can be considered as a tool that can help ease the flow of
word and sentences in your speech or writing.

Examples of Personal Pronoun


1. Singular first persons : I, me, my, and mine
I go to school every day. (is used as the subject of a sentence)

2. Plural first persons : we, us, our, ours

3. Singular dan plural second persons : you, yours, yours.

4. Singular third persons: he, him, his, she, her, hers, it, its.
