Homework Sheet 7: Prime Numbers

THE SEIVE OF ERASTOSTHENES

Erastosthenes was a famous mathematician in Ancient Greece. He discovered a way
of finding prime numbers known as the Seive of Erastosthenes. A prime number is
a number which is divisible only by itself and one. Note that 1 is not a prime number.
Use five different coloured pens or pencils.
Follow the directions to find the prime numbers to 100.
1 Cross out 1 with a pencil.

2 Draw a circle around 2, 3 , 5 and 7 with the same pencil.

3 Use a different colour. Cross out all the multiples of 2, leaving 2 itself.

4 Use a third colour. Cross out all the multiples of 3, except for 3.

5 Use a fourth colour. Cross out all the multiples of 5, except for 5.

6 Use a fifth colour. Cross out all the multiples of 7, except for 7.

7 Use your first colour again. Draw circles around all the numbers that are left.

These are the prime numbers to 100.
