UNIT 2 WEATHER AND CLIMATE

Contenido mnimo para estudiar:

WEATHER (tiempo atmosfrico): it describes the atmosphere conditions in a place and time (describe las
condiciones atmosfricas en un lugar y tiempo). There are 4 different factors of weather (hay 4 factores diferentes).

1. Temperature (temperatura): if it is hot or cold (si hace calor o fro).

We use a thermometer to measure (usamos un termmetro para medir) the temperature.
2. Humidity (humedad): the water vapour in the air (el vapor de agua en el aire). Fog or mist (niebla o neblina/bruma).
We use a hygrometer (higrmetro) to measure humidity.
3. Wind (viento): moving air (aire movindose). Breeze, gale or hurricane (brisa, vendaval o huracn).
We use an anemometer (anemmetro) to measure wind speed (velocidad del viento).
4. Precipitation: water that falls. It can be liquid or solid (agua que cae. Puede ser lquida o slida). Rain, snow

or hail (lluvia, nieve o granizo). We use a rain gauge (pluvimetro) to measure precipitation.
PRECIPITATION: We have different types of precipitation (tenemos diferentes tipos de precipitacin):

Rain: liquid water droplets (lluvia: gotitas de agua lquida).

Drizzle: light rain (llovizna: lluvia ligera).

Sleet: a mixture of (aguanieve: una mezcla de) rain and snow.

Hail: solid water in form of ice balls (granizo: agua slida en forma de bolas de hielo).

Snow: solid water droplets (nieve: gotas de agua slida).

CLOUDS (nubes): We have different types of clouds:

Cumulus clouds: fat clouds that mean good weather.

Stratus clouds: low clouds (estratos: nubes bajas) that mean drizzle and fog (llovizna y niebla).

Cirrus clouds: thinner and higher clouds that mean bad weather.

(Cmulos: nubes gordas que significan buen tiempo).

(Cirros: nubes ms delgadas y altas que significan mal tiempo).

PREDICTING THE WEATHER (predecir el tiempo): meteorologists use different instruments to predict the
weather (los meteorlogos utilizan diferentes instrumentos para predecir el tiempo). We use weather maps with symbols to
show predictions (usamos mapas del tiempo con smbolos para mostrar predicciones).

CLIMATE (clima): it describes the weather characteristics of a place:

1. Polar climates (climas polares): cold all year (fros todo el ao). The temperatures are very low (son muy bajas).
2. Temperate climates (climas templados): hot summers and cold winters (veranos calurosos e inviernos fros).
3. Tropical climates (climas tropicales): warm (clidos) all year.
CLIMATES IN SPAIN (los climas en Espaa):
1. Oceanic climates (climas ocenicos): mild and rainy.
(Templados y lluviosos).

2. Mountain climates (climas de montaa): low temperatures

in winter and mild in summer.
3. Mediterranean climates (climas mediterrneos):
High temperatures in summer and mild winters.
(Altas temperaturas en verano e inviernos templados).

4. Continental climates (climas continentales): low temperatures in winter and high in summer.
5. Subtropical climates (climas subtropicales): mild temperatures and low rain all year.
