Digital Witness Hard Drive Capacity

The Digital Witness system saves video images directly onto the hard drive of the Digital
Witness Viewpoint DVR server. By digitizing the surveillance images, the system is able to
provide video playback efficiently and on demand, as well as provide the images over a network
via our Digital Witness - Remote software.
The amount of video images that can be saved onto the Viewpoint server is limited by the
size of the DVRs built-in hard drive. Digital Witness builds all of its Viewpoint servers to
provide an average of one-months recording time, under average conditions. However, the
configuration of each Digital Witness system and its intended use will effect the storage
capacity, making the precise determination of hard drive capacity much more complex. This
document describes the components that effect hard drive capacity, and details the options for
extending the storage capacity of the Digital Witness System.

Calculating Hard Drive Capacity for a Single Day

Calculating the hard drive capacity of each Digital Witness Viewpoint server involves a
fairly simple mathematical solution, involving a series of calculations using pre-set multiples.
The solution begins with determining the maximum amount of hard drive space needed to record
a full day of activity on one camera. The equation to make this determination is as follows:
1.

2. Multipled by:

3. Multiplied By:

4. Equals

Kilobytes Per Frame

Digital Witness saves video files in individual file packets for each frame of video.
These frames are saved directly onto the internal hard drives of each Viewpoint DVR server.
Our proprietary encryption system allows each frame of video to be saved in a very compressed
format; however, even after compression, video files are still quite large. The average file size of
one frame of black & white video in the Digital Witness system is 3 kilobytes. When using color
cameras, the average frame file size increases to just over 4 kilobytes each. Audio recording will
also increase overall frame storage sizes.

Frames Per Second

Once we understand how many kilobytes of storage are needed for each frame, we need
to determine how many frames appear each second. Digital Witness offers a number of different
frames per second (FPS) options, depending on the intended application. The Digital Witness
Viewpoint Model No. 1650 has the capability to record up to 30 frames per second per camera;
however, the average user will not need to utilize 30 frames per second. The human eye
processes at just under 30 FPS, and normal human motion appears fluid at approximately 7 FPS.
High FPS capabilities are needed only in extreme conditions involving fast moving objects, such

as cars or other motorized vehicles. Typical Digital Witness users will employ our other models
of DVRs, which record at between 7.5 FPS (Viewpoint Model No. 1600) and 15 FPS per
camera (Viewpoint Model Nos 400 and 800.
With these numbers in hand, we can quickly calculate the maximum amount of hard
drive space necessary to record video during a 24 hour period, for an individual camera.

Calculating Actual Hard Drive Usage & Capacity

The numbers above are very large, and it is easy to see that recording video at 24 hours a
day, across 4-16 cameras would quickly fill even the largest of internal hard drives. The task of
actually reviewing this much video would also be virtually impossible. Fortunately, the Digital
Witness system is designed to eliminate both of these problems. While the system is capable or
recording camera images 24/7, it can also be programmed to record only upon motion
identification, sensor activation, or upon a pre-set time schedule. Using these settings
dramatically reduces the amount of video recorded and stored, which greatly reduces hard drive
storage needs and video review time. The equation for determining the actual hard drive
capacity for each Viewpoint DVR, dependant on the actual situational usage of the system, is as
follows:
1.

Percentage of Recording Time Per Day

Determining the percentage of time that recording will take place on the system is very
subjective, as it is based on the actual set-up of the motion detection/sensor/time schedule
features of the system, as well as the activity that is occurring within the camera viewpoint.
Digital Witness bases its determination of a standard server configuration by assuming that the
system will be programmed to record only upon motion detection activation, set on a 24 hour,
seven day schedule. We then assume that the average business will be open for 12 hours per
day, with little to no motion-based activity during the other 12 hours. This cuts the maximum
gigabytes per day storage requirement in half. Further, Digital Witness assumes that each
camera will be recording activity approximately 50% of the time during the hours of operation,
based on appropriate motion detection settings (i.e., activity will not typically be underway at all
times in all camera locations). This results in an overall reduction in the gigabytes per day
storage requirement to 25.0% of the maximum.

Standard Hard Drive Sizes

Digital Witness utilizes the 25% average utilization, as well as actual results from
existing clients, to determine the standard sizes for each of its Viewpoint DVR Models. Our goal
is to provide an average of one-month of video storage on each system. Assuming that the
average business is open five days a week, a storage capacity of 21 days yields approximately
one month worth of video storage. The standard hard drive sizes of the Digital Witness
Viewpoint DVR Models and the resulting storage capacities are as follows:

In order to build out the appropriate system for the intended application, each user will
need to estimate their own percentage of utilization, as well as determining the appropriate
balance of black & white v. color cameras and the necessity for audio recording. There are
several charts attached to the back of this packet to help aid in this process.

When Storage Capacity is Full

When the Viewpoint DVR reaches its maximum storage capacity, the Digital Witness
system provides two options. The user can program the system to either overwrite the oldest
saved video with new video, or to stop recording altogether and issue a warning to the user that
the storage capacity is full.
Digital Witness can upgrade each Viewpoint DVR in many ways to add additional
storage capacity to your Digital Witness system to prevent or delay reaching full storage
capacity. Please contact Digital Witness for pricing information with respect to these options.

Internal Hard Drives

Digital Witness can build each Viewpoint Server to include up to 1 Terabyte (1,000 GB)
of hard drive space, making extra storage readily available. This will allow each system to retain
significantly more days worth of saved video. The attached charts will aid in determining the
amount of additional hard drive space that may be needed for the intended application.

DVD-ROM Drives
Each Viewpoint DVR server comes standard with a CD-ROM writeable drive, which will
allow users to transfer small amounts of data (typically 1-2 hours) to a CD. Digital Witness can
also add a DVD-ROM writeable drive to the system. DVDs can hold up to 4.7 GB of memory,
which will allow users to transfer one or more days worth of video to DVD. This option creates
a convenient and permanent storage system for all recorded activity.

External Hard Drives

Viewpoint DVRs can also be expanded past their base capabilities to handle even larger
amounts of storage by adding external disk arrays. External disk arrays can vary in size from 4
drive systems to 15 disk systems, adding several terabytes of additional storage capacity to a
Viewpoint DVR or configuration of multiple Viewpoint DVRs. Digital Witness network
engineers will be happy to consult with your technical staff to design the appropriate external
drive array architecture for your intended applications.
