Secure BTS investment with flexible migration from one radio access technology
to another: GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA and HSPA evolution, and LTE TDD/FDD
radio access technologies as well as all needed frequency variants.
Support for 3GPP functions and features in 3GPP release 9 and later providing a
future proof platform for advanced radio systems.
Support for multi-operator cases (MORAN) where several operators can share
resources of one BTS.
Support for the most common interfaces between the modules and functions as
defined by Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI) and Common Public
Radio Interface (CPRI).

Dynamic Abis over IP/Ethernet (TDM pseudowire, no external PDH interfaces are needed).
CESoPSN for external traffic (external PDH interfaces are needed).
Synchronization options:
More or other Ethernet interfaces than those available in the Multiradio System Module are required.
Optical Ethernet in case the shared RP3-01/transport port on the core module is occupied by RP3-01.

Radio Module provides the Radio Frequency (RF) functionality. Maximum of three RF Modules can be directly connected
to the Master System Module.
System Module provides baseband processing as well as control and transmission functionality;
System Module capacity depends on system module type, for details see section 2.1.2. The number of Rel99 CEs
activated can be increased by license control;
The Baseband Extension Module is also available. In case of two system modules in one BTS, Flexi System Extension Kit
cable set (FSKA) is required.
Release3 Triple RF Module (90W / 6Gb OBSAI interface supporting one, two or three sectors);

The product can be used in pico and microcellular applications and also as a
coverage fill-in solution. The main use case is in capacity limited networks
where the operator needs to start using smaller cells to be able to deliver the
required system capacity.

When the System Module is used as a System Extension Module, the external
synchronization input connectors cannot be used. Synchronization is provided by
the master System Module.
The Rel.1 System Extension Module provides a basic capacity of 32 CE without the
channel capacity license. Enabling more CE capacity for the System Extension
Module requires that a channel capacity license (RAN912 Channel Capacity LK)
with sufficient capacity is downloaded to the BTS.

Power is distributed from FPFA/B to the System Module. FPFA is used with System
Module rel. 1. In System Module rel. 2, it is replaced with FPFB, which provides more
power feeding capacity to RF Modules. FPFB is compatible with both System Module
releases.

RF Module, cont.
The RF Module is a stand-alone fully operational transceiver module with integrated antenna filters. The RF Module (Triple PA)
is able to support up to three sectors in a Flexi WCDMA base station.
Radio-related signal processing is performed in the RF Module. It hosts the RF functionality, and also provides power supply and
control for MHAs as well as for antenna RealTilt.
The RF Module has integrated fans and Bias-Ts.
The RF Module can support one to three sectors with the following integrated components:
Transceivers with TX for two adjacent carriers (three transceivers in the Triple RF
module, two in the Dual and one in the Single RF Module)
Transceivers with RX for two adjacent carriers with diversity (three transceivers in the
Triple RF Module, two in the
Dual and one in the Single RF Module)
Linear power amplifiers (three in the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual and one in the Single RF Module)
RF filters with main and diversity branch (three in the Triple RF Module, two in the Dual and one in the Single RF Module)
Masthead amplifier and 3GPP Antenna Tilt power feed and control for up to three sectors

Antenna sub-module
Electro-mechanics.
Common sub-module
The Common sub-module (CM) is an integrated part of an Active Antenna; it interconnects active elements of an active
antenna to the Flexi Multiradio System Module or to another active antenna or Radio Remote Head (RRH) in the same chain.
The CM is mainly responsible for the following functions:
Beamforming
providing four internal RP3-01 interfaces towards active elements (used for internal communication between CM and AEs).

Antenna sub-module
The Antenna sub-module is responsible for the following tasks:
Provides a highly efficient, cross-polarized, single or combined antenna radiator structure with the desired horizontal and
vertical pattern beam width
Provides an integrated RET functionality and RET interfaces for the passive antenna array.
Electro-mechanics
The Electro-mechanic parts are an enclosure for the electrical sub-modules meeting the environmental requirements. It is
responsible for the following functions:

142
Overvoltage protection
FSEG can be installed in the following ways:
On a pole using brackets (horizontal or vertical position, using optional Flexi Pole Installation Kit FPIA)
On stack installations using brackets (horizontal or vertical position, using optional Flexi Mounting
Auxiliary Brackets FMAA)
In outdoor applications, the FSEG can be attached to the outdoor cabinet roof (a maximum of one
item can be installed next to the FSEG). There are fixing points for the FSEG in the outdoor cabinet.
In indoor applications, the FSEG can be attached to the indoor cabinet roof. In stacked applications,
the FSEG is mounted in the proximity of the BTS.
FSEG can be installed either horizontally (cable lead-ins on the side) or vertically (cable lead-ins facing
down)
