ConsumptionBasedPlanning
Purpose
ThecentralroleofMRPistomonitorstocksandinparticular,toautomaticallycreateprocurement
proposalsforpurchasingandproduction(plannedorders,purchaserequisitionsordeliveryschedules).This
targetisachievedbyusingvariousmaterialsplanningmethodswhicheachcoverdifferentprocedures.
Consumptionbasedplanningisbasedonpastconsumptionvaluesandusestheforecastorother
statisticalprocedurestodeterminefuturerequirements.Theproceduresinconsumptionbasedplanningdo
notrefertothemasterproductionschedule.Thatis,thenetrequirementscalculationisnottriggeredeither
byplannedindependentrequirementsordependentrequirement.Instead,itistriggeredwhenstocklevels
fallbelowapredefinedreorderpointorbyforecastrequirementscalculatedusingpastconsumption
values.

ImplementationConsiderations
Consumptionbasedplanningproceduresaresimplematerialsplanningprocedureswhichyoucanuseto
achievesettargetswithrelativelylittleeffort.Therefore,theseplanningproceduresareusedinareas
withoutinhouseproductionand/orinproductionplantsforplanningbothBandCpartsandoperating
supplies.
Theprerequisitesforimplementingconsumptionbasedplanningare:
Ifyouuseforecastrequirements,theconsumptionpatternshouldbefairlyconstantorlinearwithfew
irregularities.
YourInventoryManagementmustfunctionwellandshouldalwaysbeuptodate.

Integration
Consumptionbasedplanningisintegratedinthe MaterialsManagement component.Youcanaccessthe
consumptionbasedplanningfunctionsfromtheSAPEasyAccessMenubychoosing Logistics
MaterialsManagement MaterialsPlanning MRP.

Creationofprocurementproposals
Thetypeofprocurementproposaltobecreatedautomaticallyintheplanningrundependsonthe
procurementtypeofthematerial.Forinhouseproduction,thesystemalwayscreatesaplannedorder.For
externalprocurement,theMRPcontrollercanchoosebetweenaplannedorderandapurchaserequisition.
IftheMRPcontrollerchoosesaplannedorder,itthenhastobeconvertedintoapurchaserequisitionina
separatestepsothatitismadeavailabletoPurchasing.
TheadvantageofcreatingaplannedorderisthattheMRPcontrollerhasmorecontroloverthe
procurementproposals.ThepurchasingdepartmentcannotorderthematerialuntiltheMRPcontrollerhas
checkedandconvertedtheorderproposal.Ifapurchaserequisitioniscreated,itisimmediatelyavailableto
thepurchasingdepartmentwhichthentakesovertheresponsibilityformaterialavailabilityandwarehouse
stocks.

PlanningatplantlevelorforMRPareas
Asmaterialsplanningisusuallycarriedoutatplantlevel,allavailablestockintheplant(fromnowon
describedasavailablewarehousestock)istakenintoaccountduringplanning.However,stocksfrom
individualstoragelocationscanbeexcludedfromrequirementsplanningortheycanbeplanned
independently.Thesestocksarethennotincludedinmaterialrequirementsplanningatplantlevel.Onthe
otherhand,consignmentstocksfromthevendorarealwaysincludedinMRP.
YoucanalsocarryoutMRPforindividualMRPareas.YoucandefinetheMRPareas.Thismeans,for
example,thatyoucangroupseveralstoragelocationsintooneMRPareaandcarryoutMRPforthisMRP
area.

Lotsizingprocedures
ThestandardlotsizingproceduresareavailableintheSAPsystem.However,youcanquiteeasily
integrateyourownformulaswithoutmucheffort.

Automaticplanningrun
Theautomaticplanningrundeterminesshortagesandcreatestheappropriateprocurementelements.The
systemcreatesnotesforcriticalpartsandexceptionalsituationsprovidingyouwiththenecessary
informationforprocessingtheplanningresults.
