Communication in the
Workplace
Lesson 1: Importance of Oral Presentation
Objectives
At the end of the lesson you should be able to:
Determine and recognize the importance and purpose of an
oral presentation.
Identify the specific purpose of an oral presentation.
Recall the advantages in an oral presentation, and
Answer the following questions in the given exercise.

Since the very beginning of business, presentations are very

useful. Communicating in front of different people, speaking and
presenting have always been a need in business life. According to
Hedge (2000), the ability to communicate is the most important goal
that communicative language teaching aims to reach. It is to be able to
operate effectively in the real world.
Morley (2006) stated, for a successful oral communication
workers need a thorough in-depth instruction and practice. The best
practice is to give oral presentations. Oral presentation skills are
essential for employability and true academic study as they lead
students to enter into debate and sustained reasoning. According also
to King (2002), Oral presentations represent an opportunity for
developing real-world communications as well as leadership skills.
Making presentations is often an important part of moving up in
an organization. In some cases, moving up may require you to become
more visible to your superiors and to people in other departments, so
they are more acutely aware of your abilities when they need to fill
higher positions. In fact your immediate supervisor may set up an
opportunity for you to present new ideas or

lead a meeting in order to help you become more visible. The way you
handle yourself in these situations can help you shape your reputation
as a knowledgeable, organized speaker or as a bumbler. The
impression you make, whether its very good or very bad, can have
effects on your success well beyond the success of the talk itself.
Presentation speaking is so important in business that many
organizations devote impressive amounts of money and time to
teaching employees the required skills. According in a survey, thirtyfour out of fifty-four leading corporations indicated that they offered
speech instruction, most of them more than once. This sort of
instruction doesnt come cheap, either: major consulting firms that
conduct training in speech skills typically charge between $1,200 and
$2,000 for two days of private consultation and around $650 for a twoor three- day course.

ADVANTAGES OF ORAL PRESENTATIONS

There are some advantages of an oral presentation. It can
answer your question, Why do I have to give a presentation?

Efficient. Oral presentations can save your time. Unlike any

other presentation that are written. It is better to have a
presentation when it is in an oral way of delivering.
More Complete. Face-to-face communication is way better than
in written communication. Oral presentation is more complete
than written. Why? Because in delivering your presentation in
personal, you can answer their questions immediately during
your talk.
More Persuasive. According to researches, it shows that during
your face-to-face communication with your co-workers, you have
the chance to impress your audience with your knowledge,
enthusiasm, and confidence.

PURPOSE OF AN ORAL PRESENTATION

As a speaker, you have a certain goal when you will be delivering
your talk to your audience. Your specific purpose could be the
following.

To Inform. Informing new and different ideas to your audience is

a good example of a purpose. This will help your audience gain
the new knowledge and acquire specific skills.
To Persuade. It focuses mainly on the audience to change their
own way on how they think about a certain thing.
To Entertain. In every presentation, there is and should be
always an entertainment. An entertainment make your audience
feel convenient and to make them feel a good time in listening to
your presentation.
