A 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) network for 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n devices, such as iPhone,
iPod touch, and older computers
A 5 GHz network for 802.11n, 802.11a, and 802.11ac devices, such as iPhone, iPad, Apple TV,
and newer computers
Wi-Fi devices automatically join the network that provides the best performance and
compatibility, and AirPort Extreme shares your broadband Internet connection with computers
and devices on your network.

Next to the power port is a reset button for troubleshooting your AirPort Extreme. The status
light on the front shows its current status.
Connect the Ethernet cable thats connected to your DSL or cable modem (if youll connect
to the Internet) to the Ethernet WAN port (<) .
Connect a USB cable from the USB port (d) on your AirPort Extreme to a compatible USB
printer, a hard disk, or a hub.
Connect an Ethernet cable from any Ethernet device to any of the Ethernet LAN ports (G).
After you connect the cables for all the devices you plan to use, connect the power cord to
the power port and plug your AirPort Extreme into a power outlet. There is no power switch.
Important: Use only the power cord that came with your AirPort Extreme.
When you plug the AirPort Extreme power cord into a power outlet, the status light glows
amber during startup, and then flashes amber during setup. The status light glows green after
your AirPort Extreme is set up and connected to the Internet or a network.
When you connect Ethernet cables to the Ethernet ports, the lights above them glow solid green.

There may be a problem starting up. Your AirPort Extreme will restart and try again.
Create a password-protected Wi-Fi network, and then connect to the Internet and share
the connection with other computers and Wi-Fi devices, such as iPad, iPhone, iPod touch,
and Apple TV.
Create a guest network, with or without password protection, to give wireless Internet
access to friends and visitors. Devices that connect to the guest network have access to the
Internet, but not to your local network.
Connect a Wi-Fi printer to AirPort Extreme. All the supported computers and Wi-Fi devices
on the network can print to it.
Connect a USB hard disk to AirPort Extreme. All the computers on the network can
access the disk. Use the Time Machine application in OS X v10.5.7 or later to back up all the
Mac computers in your home.

Create a new network that wireless computers and devices can use to connect to the
Internet and to each other.
Extend an existing network. If the network is connected to the Internet, all the computers
and wireless devices on the AirPort network can use the Internet connection.
Computers connected to your AirPort Extreme using Ethernet can also access the network to
share files and connect to the Internet.
If youre using your AirPort Extreme to connect to the Internet, you need a broadband (DSL
or cable modem) account with an Internet service provider, or a connection to the Internet
using an existing Ethernet network. If you received specific information from your ISP (such
as a static IP address or a DHCP client ID), you may need to enter it in AirPort Utility. Have this
information available before you set up your AirPort Extreme.

OS X v10.7.5 or later
AirPort Utility v6.3 or later
Use Software Update to get the latest version of OS X and AirPort Utility.

To set it up:
1 Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
2 Select your AirPort Extreme and click Continue. If you dont see the AirPort Extreme you
want to configure, choose it from the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar.
3 Follow the onscreen instructions to create a new network or extend an existing network.
If you havent set up your AirPort Extreme, the default network name is Apple Network
XXXXXX, where XXXXXX is the last six digits of the AirPort ID.
2 Open AirPort Utility.
3 Select the AirPort Extreme you want, then click Edit.
4 If youre prompted for a password, enter it.
5 Adjust the settings you want for your AirPort Extreme and your network.
If you shut down your Mac or put it to sleep during a backup, Time Machine stops the backup
and then continues where it left off after your Mac starts up again.
For more information about Time Machine, choose Help > Help Center from the Finder on
Mac, and then enter Time Machine in the search field.
Place your AirPort Extreme in an open area where there are few obstructions, such as large
pieces of furniture or walls. Place it away from metallic surfaces.
Place your AirPort Extreme on a table or surface with adequate air circulation under and
around it. Dont place your AirPort Extreme on a carpet or other soft material, as the material
can block the airflow vents.
If you place your AirPort Extreme behind furniture, keep at least an inch (2.54 centimeters)
of space between the AirPort Extreme and the furniture.
Avoid placing your AirPort Extreme in an area surrounded by metal surfaces on three or
more sides.
If you put your AirPort Extreme in an entertainment center with your stereo equipment,
dont surround AirPort Extreme with audio, video, or power cables. Place it so the cables are
to one side. Keep as much space as possible between AirPort Extreme and the cables.
Dont place books, papers, or other objects on top of the AirPort Extreme. These may
interfere with AirPort Extreme cooling.
Place your AirPort Extreme at least 25 feet (8 meters) from any microwave oven, 2.4 GHz
cordless phone, or other source of interference.
15
Avoiding Interference
The farther away the interference source, the less likely it is to cause a problem. The following
can interfere with AirPort communication:
Microwave ovens
Direct Satellite Service (DSS) radio frequency leakage
The original coaxial cable that might have come with a satellite dish. Contact the device
manufacturer and get newer cables.
Certain electrical devices such as power lines, railroad tracks, and power stations
Cordless telephones that operate in the 2.4GHz or 5GHz range. If you have problems with
your phone or AirPort communication, change the channel your AirPort Extreme uses, or
change the channel your phone uses.
Nearby base stations using adjacent channels. For example, if device A is set to channel 1,
base station B should be set to channel 6 or 11.
On a Mac, use the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar to select the network created by
your AirPort Extreme (the network name doesnt change).
Use something pointed (such as a ballpoint pen) to press and hold the reset button until
the status light flashes quickly (about 5 seconds).
Your AirPort Extreme resets with the following settings:
it. Make sure your AirPort Extreme is connected directly to the modem via Ethernet before
reconnecting power to the modem.
For more information about why the light is flashing, open AirPort Utility, select your
AirPort Extreme, and then click Edit to display information about the flashing light.
You can also select Monitor base station for problems in AirPort preferences. If the base
station has a problem, AirPort Utility opens and walks you through solving the problem.
On a Mac, go to www.apple.com/support/airport.
On an iOS device, go to the App Store.
You can also update your AirPort Extreme firmware when it becomes available.
To update your AirPort Extreme firmware from a Mac:
1 Open AirPort Utility.
2 Select your AirPort Extreme.
3 Click Update next to the version number.
To update your AirPort Extreme firmware from an iOS device:

AirPort ID: Two addresses are used to identify the AirPort Extreme on a wireless network.
Ethernet ID: You may need to provide this address to your ISP to connect your
AirPort Extreme to the Internet.
The only way to shut off power completely to your AirPort Extreme is to disconnect it from
the power source.
When connecting or disconnecting your AirPort Extreme, always hold the plug by its sides.
Keep your fingers away from the metal part of the plug.
Your AirPort Extreme should not be opened for any reason, even when its unplugged. If your
AirPort Extreme needs service, see Learning More, Service, and Support on page 20.
Never force a connector into a port. If the connector and port dont join with reasonable
ease, they probably dont match. Make sure that the connector matches the port and that
youve positioned the connector correctly in relation to the port.
Protect your AirPort Extreme from direct sunlight, and rain or other moisture.
Take care not to spill any food or liquid on your AirPort Extreme. If you do, unplug it before
cleaning up the spill.
Do not use your AirPort Extreme outdoors. AirPort Extreme is an indoor product.
