Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time
Greetings of peace.
This weeks Gospel is from the Sermon on the Mount. Every time I see this passage, I think of my
five years (2005-2010) on Long Beach Island NJ. I was a Parochial Vicar in the Parish. The parish
demographics were defined largely by the fact that the year-round people were mostly retirees. It
was a big parish and we held a lot of funerals. The Sermon on the Mount was frequently the Gospel
chosen for the Funeral Mass. (Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.) I was the
presider for many, sometimes presiding at them two or three times a week.
I was surprised how much I was interiorly changed by that experience of being with people as they
died, praying for the deceased, praying for their families, and preparing homilies for funerals. I
presided over all kinds of funerals: someone in her teens, a man in his 20s, and other people in the
their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s 70s 80s, and 90s. The decade of your death partly determines the nature
of the mourning for those left behind.
There are recurring themes in the regrets that people express at the end of their lives. They regret not
loving more, not risking more, and not pursuing their own dreams more. They regret letting
themselves be controlled too much by other people. They regret choosing unhappiness over
happiness. Perhaps we can all learn something from them.
Have a blessed week!
