Learning is the activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying,
practicing, being taught or experiencing something. It is the modification of an
organized behavior as a result of maturation and environmental experience.
Individually, we have our own style of learning to achieve learning. Expert
psychologists defined many learning styles. Basing from the theory of Howard
Gardner, I observed my own style of learning and it turned out that I am a solitary
(intrapersonal) learner.
I am a student who prefers to learn alone, to study alone and to work alone. I
create my personal interest in the topics. My thoughts have a large influence on my
performance. I am more productive when learning alone. When in a group, I cannot
learn well with my group mates. I let them do the work because I cannot learn freely
so I cannot share my thoughts. Honestly, when there are works or reports by group
or by pair, I am silent and my principle is just give my part and Ill do i t. Meaning, I
prefer to do the work alone and submit what I did to my group mates or pair as my
contribution or I let them do the draft or layout and then I ll just get my part and do
it. Sometimes, I am happier when my peer let me do the work alone because there
are no barriers in my learning. I can freely think. I have a feeling that the level of my
thinking when I do a work and study alone is higher compared when I learn with
groups. During discussion, I hate it when a teacher calls my name to recite. Im not
good in oral. I prefer to keep my understanding in my mind rather than saying it.
As an advantage, though I am just an average learner, I can be an
independent learner. I can learn without a peer. I am more productive when learning
alone. Well, it is a disadvantage for me when the activity given by a teacher is a
group activity for I cannot think well so I cannot share my thoughts, too. Well, I can
only share my thoughts if theyll just give me my part so I can do it alone. During
discussion, I also cannot share what I have understood or what I have learned since
I prefer to keep it in myself.
As a result, I have a low participation in class since I am not unto reciting and
sharing my thoughts and understanding but I dont mind. As long as I am learning, I
am fine with it. I may not be able to recite or to share my thoughts, I know within
myself that I learned something. I may not be able to deliver my thoughts
successfully in oral, I know within myself that I know it.
Basing from the learning styles and multiple intelligences defined by Howard
Gardner, I already proved that the learning style I am convenient the most is the
solitary (intrapersonal). For now, as a student, I prefer to be alone in learning but as
a future teacher, I am a trying to do my best to be an active solitary learner so that
when the time comes that I will be in the field, I will share what I have learned to my
future students actively and confidently.
