IEEE MALAYSIAS 30TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION BOOK

IEEE Malaysia Section is publishing a special edition

book (ISBN 978-967-2048-00-8) to commemorate
the 30th anniversary of the IEEE Malaysia Section
last year. The book includes a brief history of Malaysia section, which includes all the 25 chapters and affinity groups. This book
is written as a way to remember and appreciate the hundreds of people who run the society from 1985 until 2015. If you were
actively involved in the society during those periods, it is very likely that you are featured in this book.
The compilation of the contents involved so many people including several of the past section chairs, the 2015 chapter
committees, especially the appointed associate editors and the 2015 executive committee of IEEE Malaysia section. We had to
reach out to as far as the IEEE Asia Pacific in Singapore for the historical data. I believe this special document should be owned
by every IEEE member in Malaysia, especially those who have served as chairs as well as committee members in the recent
years. It is meant as a source of reference for you to understand more about IEEE Malaysia.
You can own a personal copy of this book, which will be available

IEEE-CPMT Best Engineering Final Year Project

Book Prize

IEMT-EMAP2016 Conference at G-Hotel, Penang

(20th 22nd Sept)

On 23rd July 2016, Dr. Chee Choong Kooi,

representing IEEE-CPMT, has presented the IEEE
CPMT Best Engineering Final Year Project Book
Prize, to Mr. Mah Chee Weng, a graduate from
Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering,
Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham
Malaysia Campus. The Award, a book prize of
RM500 and a book on electronic engineering, were
presented in conjunction with the 2016 University
Graduation Ceremony at the Putrajaya International
Convention Centre.
Chee Weng has the following to
say, Renewable energy is a rising
technology that is intimately
linked to sustainable development.
There are various types of
renewable energy and I had the
opportunity to carry out research
in the area of Ocean Thermal
Energy
Conversion
(OTEC).
OTEC utilises the temperature
difference between the warm surface seawater and
cold deep seawater to generate energy. The
research involves developing a mathematical and
simulation model that evaluates the performance of
an OTEC system. I found the work very challenging
as I had to understand and integrate engineering
theories beyond my core discipline, e.g.
thermodynamics and heat engines. Many times, I had
mixed feelings regarding my performance and the
outcome of the project. However, through
perseverance, I managed to overcome obstacles and
complete the project. Only now in retrospect, I can
say it was an enjoyable journey. The research
completion and the experiences gained would not be
possible without guidance from Dr Roselina Arelhi,
Prof. Haider Abbas and Dr Nandha Kumar. Their
source of knowledge proved to be invaluable. My
heartfelt gratitude goes to my family and friends for
supporting me throughout the course of this work.
Lastly, I appreciate the acknowledgement of my
efforts by the IEEE-CPMT for awarding me this prize.
Thank you, everyone.

IEMT-EMAP2016 (The 37th International Electronics

Manufacturing Technology Conference and 18th
Electronic Materials and Packaging Conference) was
held at the G-Hotel, in the beautiful city of Penang,
from 20th to 22nd September 2016. This bi-annual
CPMT Msia flagship conference was held with the
theme of Packaging the IoT. Despite challenging
global economy faced, the conference was held
successfully with an encouraging number of ~400
participants of electronic packaging experts, which
jointly attended by overseas participants from Asia
Pacific, Europe and USA, which made up >1/3 of the

September to 1st October, 2016 as a fund raising

collected will be used to support underprivileged
school children who lack essentials (proper clothing,

humanitarian projects in villages where the children
reside.
The climb was particularly significant as Chris
reached the peak as one of the few, if not the only,

doing so in his first attempt. Asked how he felt after
the climb, Chris had this
to say, It was an
exhilarating experience

flora and fauna from base
camp and to overcome
the challenging contours
of the cold and chilly
rocky peak and be
rewarded
with
an
awesome view of a
sunrise and marvel at

down from the peak.
The pain and aches to
be endured after the
climb was well worth the
life long memory and I
would encourage all to
attempt the climb as
soon as possible

He further added that it was a good opportunity to

raise funds for the underprivileged children in Sabah,

Distinguished Lecturer Program

(DLP) is an annual activity by
the
IEEE
Computational

(CIS)
Malaysia Chapter where top
CIS research from around the
world will be invited to Malaysia
to deliver a distinguished
lecture to the academicians and students. This year, we
are honored to have Prof. Nikhil R. Pal from Indian
Statistical Institute (ISI) for this purpose.
About the talk: Fuzzy Logic control has been rapidly
gaining popularity in automatic control systems due to its
capability to model the uncertainties and support
linguistic variables, for examples, air conditioning system,
washing machine, rice cooker, etc. Automatic extraction
of fuzzy rules from data raises many important issues that
must be addressed, particularly if we want to exploit the
benefits of comprehensibility of fuzzy systems. In this talk,
an interesting approach to deal with these issues in an
integrated manner will be presented. A unique attribute
of this approach is that it can exploit subtle non-linear
interactions between features, the problem (that we
intend to solve), and the tool (that is used to solve the
problem). The formulation is adapted to all three types of
fuzzy systems: classification systems, Mamdani type
systems and Takagi-Sugeno type systems.
About the speaker: Prof. Nikhil R. Pal is an INAE
Chair Professor in the Electronics and Communication
Sciences Unit of the Indian Statistical Institute. His
current research interest includes bioinformatics, brain
science, fuzzy logic, neural networks, machine learning,
and data mining. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE

Solar Bus Stop Maintenance

Young Innovate Miri

Area around Curtin University is always populated with

students. Therefore, adequate lightning on the street can provide
safety to the students. However, the lightning system in solar bus
stop had been vandalised since last year. There was no light on
the bus stop at night. Certainly, this poses a great risks to
students. To tackle this problem, a team of Curtin students led by
Kong Sheng How, vice president of IEEE Curtin Sarawak, has
initiated a project to repair the lightning system in the IEEE solar
bus stop. The project started at 9a.m. in the morning and ended
in the evening. After the completion of the project, it is clear that
the team feels contented of contributing their effort to help the
community. Now, the lightning system functions normally at night.
Thanks to the team, the students and public users are much safer
in that area at night.

To enlighten the local community with programming language

knowledge, IEEE Curtin Sarawak initiated the Young Innovate Miri
programme in collaboration with Chumbaka. IEEE has an ambitious
plan to reach out to more than 10 schools within Bintulu-Miri Area.
In the schools, workshop will be conducted on 40 students to
empower them with Arduino programming knowledge. In the
workshops, potential students will be selected to showcase their
innovative project during Curtin Open day. Prior to that, the
participant must undergo further training on C520B Arduino kits to
better equip them with technical skills. A total of 20 teams will take
part in the grand event. On the other hand, mentors from
university students will be chosen to guide the students to prepare,
build and showcase their projects that is beneficial to solve the real
life problems during Curtin Open Day.
