Settlementhistory
Europeansettlementoftheareadatesfromthelate1820swhenthefirstsettlersarrived.ThetownshipofCowrawas
establishedinthe1840s.Landwasusedmainlyforfarming,particularlygrazing.Populationwasminimaluntilthe
1870sand1880s,aidedbytheconstructionoftherailway,improvedaccessandthediscoveryofgold.Thetown
grewsteadilyasaserviceandretailcentre.Somegrowthtookplaceintheearly1900s,aidedbytheconstructionof
theWyangalaDam.Growthcontinuedintheearly1940s,duelargelytotheestablishmentofaMilitaryTrainingCamp
andaPrisonerofWarCamp.Themostsignificantdevelopmentoccurredinthepost-waryears,aidedbythe
establishmentofaMigrantCamp.Thepopulationwasrelativelystablefromtheearly1990s,atabout12,000people.
Landuse
CowraShireispredominantlyrural,withseveraltownshipswhichincluderesidential,commercialandindustrialareas.
TheShireencompassesatotallandareaofabout2,800squarekilometres,ofwhichalargeproportionisnational
parkandstatepark.Rurallandisusedmainlyforfarming,includingsheepandcattlegrazing,vegetableandcrop
productionandviticulture.SettlementisbasedmainlyinthetownshipofCowra,andthesmallervillagesofBillimari,
DarbysFalls,Gooloogong,Wattamondara,WoodstockandWyangala.
