CHAPTER 1

SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

NAME OF THE FIRM
The name of the firm provides its uniqueness Bragz Playhauz is the name owned by the
company, and is made by the owners only for the company. The name Bragz came from the
combination of the names of the owners. To create a new twist, the researchers added an animal
mascots that represents the owners, the mascots are, Bryan the beaver, Reynald the rhino, Gab
the giraffe, Aaron the alligator and Nichole as Zanjoe the zebra. These are also an original idea of
the company owned by it and it is illustrated by the owners.
LOCATION
The business location is a big factor to consider when putting up a business because it is
the key to the successful operation and overall growth. The researchers decided to choose the
best accessible location possible. The proposed business will be located the third floor of an
existing building along Teofilo Samson Ave., Deparo, Novaliches, Caloocan City, Philippines
which will be near to Luzviminda Resort and Ultra Mega Market.
PLANT SIZE
The area is about 800 sq m in size and can accommodate 125 individuals for the Party
Area, 20 for the Toddlers play area, 20 for the Kiddie Car Rides, 80 for the Jungle-Themed Play
Maze, and 50 for the Snack/Waiting Area for a total of 295 individuals for all of the major rooms
of the establishment.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Indoor playgrounds, or play centers, are playgrounds located in interior environment.
They are specifically designed for kids to play in and have tremendous fun with. The softcontained structure and play equipment are wrapped in soft foam to absorb the impact when
children fall or bounce around. As such, an indoor playground is usually a safer play area
compared to an outdoor playground.

In the United States, Indoor Playgrounds were established in 1990s and gained
immediate popularity. In the Philippines, the concept of an indoor playground was adopted in the
late 1990s basically by fast food restaurants which later on spread and emerged as play centers
in malls. The researchers have noticed that the kids in the indoor play centers have the chance to
be exposed to more physically activities and not only that they also tend to develop socialization
with other kids. In addition to these benefits, as the kids play, the parents are guiding them, thus
establishing a strong parent-child bonding.
Indoor play centers serve an increasing need in our local society. Based on studies
(Dollman, Norton, & Norton, 2005; Lester & Russell, 2010), children are becoming less active
and less fit than they were, probably due to increasing time in front of television sets and
gadgets, and high calorie-high fat diets. Less active children are more likely to be overweight,
and overweight children have a greater propensity to become overweight adults.
In view of these alarming health problems, the researchers believe that establishing an
indoor in our local community, which is Deparo, will help address these health problems and
also help create a strong parent-child relationship, bringing this industry to the locale will
provide more accessibility foe the people. In addition to this, the researchers also believe that the
proposed business, which will be a new industry in the area, can help attract more people and
promote the area as well. The purpose of this study is to understand if a childrens play center
could be feasible in Deparo which will then give the ability to provide the service, its benefits for
the people of the community and at the same time meet their needs and satisfy their wants.
PROJECT SUMMARY
MARKET FEASIBILITY
Determine if an indoor play center is marketable in the area
The Market Study reveals the target consumers and covers the 4Ps or the marketing
concepts which are the product, place, price and promotion. It consists of identifying the
markets, determining the market factors that create demand for the proposed business, and

forecasting potential demand for the proposed business. It also identifies the strengths, weakness,
opportunities or threats (SWOT) facing the proposed business.
TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY
Determine whether the product/service could be offered at the highest possible quality
level with minimum cost
The Technical Study explores on the products physical, mechanical and chemical
properties, the selected manufacturing process, plant size and production schedule, plant location
and layout, machinery and facilities or equipment needed. This part also describes the location
and lay out of the project with respective diagrams. Further, this section discusses how many
personnel or manpower are needed, their job titles and descriptions, their pay scales and other
employee development programs.
MANAGEMENT FEASIBILITY
Determine the appropriate business organization, the people who will be involved
both before and during the operating periods of the proposed business and their
functions;
The Management Study identifies the factors in establishing the proposed business, how it
shall be managed before and during the operating periods, pointing out the firms or persons
involved or to be involved in studying the different aspects of the proposed business, the type of
business organization, organizational chart and functions of each unit management personnel,
skills and numbers of labor required specifying the duties and time to be devoted to the project,
qualifications, compensations, fringe benefits and facilities. The recruitment and training
programs of personnel as well as the status of the project are taken into consideration.
FINANCIAL FEASIBILITY
Determine the profitability level of the proposed business; how can it maximize its
profit and at the same time minimize its cost;
The Financial Study attempts to determine the financial viability of projects in regards to
current legal and accounting system norms while considering probable sales forecasts or other

financially measurable benefits. It includes preliminary financial projections with a clear

understanding of assumptions and an estimation of all variable and fixed (overhead) costs will be
necessary to estimate the profitability of the proposed business. The accuracy of the revenue
projections and costs will be dependent on the reliability of the marketing predictions and
production information.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY
Determine the possible means in which the locale will benefit from the proposed
business.
The Socio-economic Study measures the economic benefits that will accrue to the people
living in the community and its vicinities. The proposed business should contribute largely for
the betterment and advancement of the community.

CHAPTER 2
INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Indoor playgrounds, also known as indoor play centers, are playgrounds located in
interior environment. They are specifically designed for kids to play in and have tremendous fun
with. The soft-contained structure and play equipment are wrapped in soft foam to absorb the
impact when children fall or bounce around. As such, an indoor playground is usually a safer
play area compared to an outdoor playground.
BRIEF BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Since its origination in 1990s from the US, indoor playground has enjoyed immense
popularity all over the world. Today, it has evolved from simple indoor climbing frame, to
complex children play center that includes multiple play areas serving different age groups.
Aside from letting the children play as one of the main source of income, the revenue of indoor
playground comes from a diverse source of childrens entertainment and services such as:
hosting party, kids art and craft, drinks, and more.
In the Philippines, the concept of an indoor playground was adopted in the late 1990s
mostly by fast food restaurants which later on spread in malls. The researchers have noticed that
the kids in the indoor playgrounds have the chance to be exposed to more physically activities
and not only that they also tend to develop socialization with other kids. In addition to these
benefits, as the kids play, the parents are guiding them, thus establishing a strong parent-child
bonding.

Indoor play centers serve an increasing need in our society. Based on studies (Dollman,
Norton, & Norton, 2005; Lester & Russell, 2010), children are becoming less active and less fit
than they were, probably due to increasing time in front of television sets and gadgets, and high
calorie-high fat diets. Less active children are more likely to be overweight, and overweight
children have a greater propensity to become overweight adults.

As people have become more

aware of the healthy aspects of their lifestyles, enrolment in adult health clubs, aerobic exercise,
recreational activities, and attention to nutrition has increased dramatically. This trend will
continue as parents attempt to provide a healthier lifestyle for their children. Another area of
parental concern is their children's safety. Nationally, as well as locally, concern for the physical
well-being of children has created a further need for a safe play environment.
Therefore, the researchers believe bringing an indoor playground to our local community,
which is Deparo, will help address the rising problems with the childrens health issues. It will
also be introduced as a new industry in the area that can help attract more people and promote
the area as well. The purpose of this study is to understand if a childrens play center could be
feasible in Deparo, which is now a rising and advancing community. This advancement has
highlighted an opportunity to go with the trend that meet the needs of the community and ensure
the relevance of an indoor play center for all customers, especially for children and their
families. The proposed business will be called as BRAGZ Playhauz which offers a unique
service since its aim is to establish a strong bond between the parent and the child through play.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Determine if an indoor play center is marketable in the area;
Determine whether the product/service could be offered at the highest possible quality
level with minimum cost;

Determine the appropriate business organization, the people who will be involved
both before and during the operating periods of the proposed business and their

functions;

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The study aims to provide valuable information regarding an indoor playground that will
be established at Teofilo Samson Ave., Deparo, Novaliches, Caloocan City, Philippines. It is
concern about the status of the amusement and recreation industry in the Philippines for it will be
helpful for the researchers to know whether this kind of business will be profitable or not. It does
not cover any other businesses that belong in this industry except for the recreational activities.
The focus of the proposed business will be on the local community only. This study covers the
selected functional recreational area and only the data available for a 6 year period (2010-2016)
will be considered for this research.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

LOCAL LITERATURE
Learning from an early age through play
The first five years of a childs life is crucial to their development. During this time,
children have significant brain growth and develop emotional, social and language skills. Studies

in the Philippines (UNICEF Philippines, 2012) show that only 3 out of children aged 0-6 years
old have access to day care or any form of learning. Some parents are generally unaware that
various forms of play actually keep children healthy and sharpen a childs skills in listening, selfexpression, observation and other skills for beginning literacy. Play-based learning could be the
key to develop an early love of learning, which can improve school attendance, creativity and
ultimately, spell the difference between the success and failure of a child when he starts formal
school. Through active play and the use of manipulative toys and learning materials, the childs
natural curiosity to explore could be encouraged, his creativity could be developed and most
importantly, a positive learning experience could be provided. It will give them a solid
foundation in basic literacy and numeracy and teaches them to develop focus, learn group
dynamics, and share with others. This produces children who are eager to learn and because they
are ready for school and able to handle their social interactions with other children, they are less
likely to drop out.

FOREIGN LITERATURE
Free Play and Play Space Design
Over the past decade, there has been a growing consensus that childrens active play
opportunities are declining, particularly in modern industrialized contexts. A systematic literature
review indicates that childrens declining physical activity levels in a variety of community

contexts is a significant public health concern (Dollman, Norton, & Norton, 2005; Lester &
Russell, 2010). In Australia, less than half of Year K, 2, and 4 students are currently meeting the
Australian physical activity guidelines for young people (NSW Department of Health, 2011).
Therefore, there is a continued need for play spaces that promote and afford children with
opportunities for active free play.
Play spaces are often designed with a certain age group in mind who will play in certain
ways. However, play spaces can be multi-age and in a commercial setting, particularly where
families or groups of families might gather for play, it is important to consider the range and
variety of play opportunities that are suited to a range of ages. Babies from a young age are able
to enjoy the positive elements of a play environment and if catered for can be provided with a
play space alongside children of other ages. Managing the play space and designing with this in
mind takes some care. Toddlers once mobile can start to move around a space and test
themselves, climbing and clambering up low structures. They like to play alongside others
(parallel play) but often play alone. Toddlers with older siblings might follow their siblings and
attempt to mimic their play and siblings will often act as pseudo carers to these toddlers. As
children become older in their early childhood years and middle childhood they will seek to
engage in play with others, sharing play experiences, building spaces to hide and pretend (this is
the age of the cubbies) socialising talking about their play adventures, making rules and testing
their risk taking skills (Rogers, 2008). Play spaces need to accommodate this versatility by
designing explorative and creative elements with a balance of climbing and skilled play. With
increasing age children normally will also play in more integrated or cooperative ways.
Identifying the level of social participation in play activity can be representative of a child's
maturity in social and cognitive development. The best play environments for children are those

which are developed on the basis of children's natural play needs, taking into account the play
behaviour engaged in at different developmental periods, including the social, physical and
cognitive forms of play. Conflicts or withdrawal are more likely to occur when children are
crowded and play equipment and materials are limited. Even in play environments with
considerable space, paucity of equipment and materials limits children's play options and leads to
increased levels of boredom and aggression and lack of social, physical and cognitive
development.
How play spaces function that is their affordance to promote certain activities and
meanings, are often more important to children than the aesthetics or physical structures of place.
That is, even in small places which may not contain a lot of physical elements or even be very
aesthetically pleasing, children will show a great desire to connect and have a sense of ownership
of a play space, especially if it becomes part of their every day or regular play experiences.
Wohlwill and Heft (1987) extended the use of affordances by articulating the environment-child
relationship in play spaces in terms of three characteristics: affordances, sensory stimulation and
response feedback. So affordance is the functional aspects of play environment, what a child
enacts in the function of their play opportunities in a place and this can vary according to their
age, skills, experience, and motivation.

Sensory stimulation combines with this and may

influence affordance as it is the potential of environmental features and settings to provide

stimulation through variations in colour, shape, pattern, dimension and texture.

Response

feedback alternatively focuses on how the play environment has the capacity to respond to the
desired activities of the child during play. Free play is also a culturally mediated activity that
may take different forms in different groups. Recently, researchers have begun to explore the
cultural dimensions of childrens play in order to understand how childrens expression of culture

impact on the form and content of their play choices. Interestingly, cross-cultural research also
suggests that children enact cultural-specific themes, reflecting activities and values that are
important within specific communities, although there seems to be some universal dimensions of
play. For example, research has tended to notice that 2-4 year olds universally use similar objects
in pretend play and that for children of all ages and ethnicities, play is a key site for engaging
social interaction between children. Providing cultural references (McConaghy, 2008) through
the play whether as permanent or temporary play elements also encourages childrens cultural
literacy. There is much to learn about the potential to build play spaces that engage with
childrens self-made cultural references though play designers such as Ric McConaghy and
others in Australia who have been working to build opportunities for children to be creative in
articulating childrens cultures through play space design.
It is important that children feel socially included in their play space. When considering
making a play space inclusive to all children the designer needs to consider access as a physical
and social issue. An inclusive environment considers access for someone who uses a mobility
aid, such as a wheel chair, access because of age or size, and inclusion as a social norm. A play
space for diverse users should be viewed as available and inclusive of all children regardless of
their age, ethnicity, and finally participation. What opportunities exist for different types and
levels of participation of play activities at the site? Having a variety of different types of play
opportunities, with a range of elements and features not only caters to the broad range of children
who will come to the play space but also ensures that multiple visits will not find children bored
and uninterested.
All children need to play and children with disability have exactly the same range of
interests and needs as any other child or group of children (Jeavons, 2008, p. 108). Play

therefore is also a key site to support children of all physical abilities to be able to engage in
open-ended opportunities that will extend their own physical capacities and allow them to
interact with other children easily. According to Jeavons (2008) there are three universal ways to
improve general access and engagement in play spaces. The first is the value of seamless
physical access into play spaces, so accessible surfacing, paths and same level entries and exits,
second is the importance of front on accessibility for children who use wheelchairs, and the third
is providing seating for carers. Past research conducted in collaboration with people with a broad
range of abilities has revealed a number of important considerations and best practices for
designing inclusive play spaces. Integral principles include creating spaces that: take into
account a diverse range of users; can be used by more than one child at a time; and provide a
variety of pathways and activities. Best practices in inclusive design, and particularly for
children with physical disabilities include: integrating accessible surfacing (e.g. rubber, rubber
tile, wood, etc.) with less-accessible surfacing (e.g. sand, pea gravel, wood chips, etc.);
accessible entry to, as well as throughout the play space; sloped and flat terrain with ramps if
required; knee clearances (e.g. at play tables); wider spaces for children who use wheelchairs;
and appropriate seating and shade (Standfield, 2008). Additionally, design ideas based on nature
of ability, will include sensory considerations, such as textured and coloured patterns, coloured
cues on key play areas (e.g. steps and level changes), distinguishable hand grips at multiple
levels, fencing and partially enclosed areas, and sensory experiences, such as touch, sound, and
smell, with nature (Department for Victorian Communities, 2007). These best practices can be
integrated into the overall design to create a rich and inclusive play space for all children.
Through free play, children learn about cultural identity and inclusion. Not all children,
however, have equal access to play or play facilities. This may be due to adults lack of

awareness of its importance, restricted availability and resources, difficulties in physical access
or fear for childrens safety.

Play can potentially contribute to social cohesion and build

communities with many research projects illustrating that adults who take children to play spaces
and play with their children are more likely to make adult friends and more likely to feel
connected and less isolated in their community. The value of the play space therefore isnt just
about children and their free play needs but about the opportunity for children and their adult
carer to connect with others. This is a fundamental principle when considering how to design
inclusive and valuable play spaces.
Safety is an important consideration in all play spaces and there are a number of
standards and requirements provided by the government that need to be followed. Australian
Playground standards are largely about play equipment, its construction and maintenance and the
surfaces where children might be in contact with the ground. Natural play spaces often offer a
number of benefits for children and if designed well can often provide much more open ended
and variable play opportunities than hard structures and prefabricated equipment. Supervision is
a fundamental ingredient for safety and ensuring the provision for parents and carers to be
immersed in the play space allowing them to participate playing with children or close by where
they may enjoy their own solitude alongside children in the environment but keeping a watchful
eye adds to the safety and enjoyment of the play space by children and their families.
Specific opportunities to connect with nature where children can encounter and engage
with a range of natural elements are also seen as critical to childrens development providing
them with rich play opportunities, and potential physical and mental health benefits (Elliott &
Davis, 2008). Elliott and Davis (2008, p. 8) note there is no doubt that natural and synthetic
playspaces promote physical health, but there are some subtle advantages to be recognised in

natural play spaces. Childrens lives in suburban Australia are often very structured in built
environments with the majority of play opportunities now being focused on hard play equipment
rather than engaging and encountering with natural objects and elements. While issues of safety
and standards dominate designing of public play spaces there are now some very well designed
play spaces that provide both structured and free play elements that incorporate natural
components. Research has shown the effect of leafy green spaces on children is very positive to
their emotional well being and beneficial to allowing children to feel calmer and less agitated.
Also socially, natural spaces enhance cooperation and more associated play as children share
objects, observe and interact about their experiences. Attention restoration theory for example
maintains that even just by being in a green place or looking at greenery, the sense of a persons
overall well being can be improved significantly through the lowering of stress levels. Many
believe children like adults crave these opportunities and in our busy lives opportunities to be in
nature are being dramatically restricted. This is especially critical at a time when children are
engaging in less and less free play outside of school and the home.
CHAPTER 3
MARKET STUDY
The Market Study reveals the target consumers and covers the 4Ps or the
marketing concepts which are the product, place, price and promotion. It consists of identifying
the markets, determining the market factors that create demand for the proposed business, and
forecasting potential demand for the proposed business. It also identifies the strengths, weakness,
opportunities or threats (SWOT) facing the proposed business.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
Determine if an indoor play center is marketable in the area;
METHODOLOGY

The methodology used to gather information for the research is the method of
survey, a quantitative approach in gathering data which is easy to use, to analyze and to interpret.
The purpose of the research is both descriptive and predictive, the data and information that were
gathered through descriptive questions will be used to forecast the marketability of the business
that the researchers plan establish.
The survey was conducted to the following which can be a source for the target market:

Chosen areas residing near the proposed business, which is in Teofilo Samson Ave., Deparo;
Local grocery and convenience stores: Ultramega, Puregold, 7-11
Nearby schools such as Guardian Angel School, Holy Infant Montessori, Deparo Elementary
School, La Consolacion College-Novaliches, Graceland Christian College.

CHAPTER 5
Management study
The Management Study identifies the factors in establishing the proposed business,
how it shall be managed before and during the operating periods, pointing out the firms or
persons involved or to be involved in studying the different aspects of the proposed business, the
type of business organization, organizational chart and functions of each unit management
personnel, skills and numbers of labor required specifying the duties and time to be devoted to
the project, qualifications, compensations, fringe benefits and facilities. The recruitment and
training programs of personnel as well as the status of the project are taken into consideration.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Determine the appropriate business organization, the people who will be involved both
before and during the operating periods of the proposed business and their functions

FORM OF BUSINESS OWNERSHIP

Ownership and legal establishment is anticipated as a Limited Partnership wherein
there is one (1) general partner and four (4) limited partners. The General Partner has unlimited
personal liability, controls and manages the partnership, and are jointly and severally liable for
all its debts and obligations. The Limited Partners (1) cannot in any way, control or participate in
the management of the partnership (otherwise they will lose their limited liability protection), (2)
are liable only up to the sums invested by them, and (3) cannot withdraw their investments
without consent of the general partners. Limited Partnerships are creatures of statute since they
must file with the state to form them. Because of the limited liability of limited partnerships, they
often are used as vehicles for raising capital. The limited partnership is a separate entity and files
taxes as a separate entity.
CAPITALIZATION
The initial investment for the proposed business will be coming from the family
assets, and personal savings of the researchers. Each of the researchers agreed to contribute an
amount of One Million Pesos (P 1,000,000.00)
starting capital of the proposed business.

for a total of

5,000,000.00

for

the

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
The organizational structure will be a flat type structure that has few or no levels of
middle management between staff and executives, thus bringing the top management in direct
contact with the frontline employees and customers. The idea is that well-trained workers will be
more productive when they are more directly involved in the decision making process, rather
than closely supervised by many layers of management. Faster response time to changing
conditions and customer preferences are some of the advantages the business can benefit to.

equipment indoors, children are soon learning through play, which is a fun way of helping
children to learn new information and skills. As well as this, indoor learning encourages children
to think of learning is an ongoing process instead of just something done outside.
2. Creativity

Indoor playgrounds are more focused on the creativity of the children. Unlike outdoor
playgrounds children are more likely to get distracted with the surroundings, or get tired because
of the heat of the day. Unlike indoor playgrounds amenities and different kinds of materials
unseen in outdoor playgrounds are present. Kids will be able to focus more and will be more
comfortable with where they are.
3. Health
There are numerous health benefits to playing inside indoor playgrounds. With more room to
play in, children are often more active when inside, which helps them to build strong bones and
good fitness levels, while also enabling them to burn off extra energy and calories. As well as

hours without even noticing that they have been doing things all alone because of their curiosity
and fun with the equipment that really isnt in outdoor playgrounds.

try new things without being guided by adults.

BE HAPPIER FEEL GREAT!

uses treatment, education, and recreation services to help people with illnesses, disabilities and
other conditions to develop and use their leisure to enhance their health, independence and well
being.
Outdoor adventure activities for people with limited physical ability give participants feelings of
success and improved feelings of confidence.
There is no greater opportunity for people to experience self-actualization and the spiritual
renewal, creative expression, discovery and stimulation than leisure offers.
BUILD FAMILY UNITY

Family bonds are improved by the sharing of leisure time. Families that recreate together tend to
be closer, more cohesive and improve their chances of staying together. This is true with both
parent-child relationships and married couples.
Families are the cornerstone in promoting well-being and healthy development in children.
TAKE CARE OF LATCH KEY CHILDREN EDUCATE CHILDREN AND ADULTS
PROVIDE CHILD CARE
Recent studies show disturbing trends about children who regularly come home to an empty
house: higher than average drop out rate, drug abuse, truancy and depression.
Good news for working parents! Many communities parks and recreation agencies provide after
school and summer child care.
In Fort Myers, Florida, 80% of the adolescents who enrolled and participated in the STARS
(Success Through Academics and Recreational Support) program improved their grades.
BUILD SELF-ESTEEM
When young people feel good about themselves they operate more effectively and productively
in our communities, families and schools. Adventure programs teach the importance of trust,
appropriate risk taking, supportive social interaction and personal challenge while creating
valuable life long memories.
Leaders are trained, developed and nurtured through leisure organizations such as teen clubs,
camps and programs.

and 59% claimed that they feel great stress at least once a week. Positive and enjoyable
recreation experiences can decrease stress and psychological tensions. Leisure activities provide
people with the opportunity to expel energy and emotion not being released in other aspects of
their lives. Psychologists found that activities such as a walk in the woods gave a boost to the
immune system that lasted two or three days. Each additional mile walked or run by a sedentary
person would give him or her an extra 21 minutes of life. According to the Gallup Poll for
American Health, Americans who exercised regularly were 2.5 times more likely to report that
they were happier than Americans who didnt exercise at all.
MEET FRIENDS CREATE MEMORIES!
A child develops social skills, problem solving and creativity through early play experiences. The
best opportunities are those that are planned and supervised. Physical activity is intellectually
stimulating and enhances the learning process and the development of cognitive skills.
