5E Lesson Plan

Subject area/course/grade level:

Mathematics/Algebra II/ 12th

Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students):

A2.25b Graph polynomial functions, identify zero when suitable factorizations are available, and
showing end behavior.
A2.13 Know and apply the binomial Theorem for the expansion of (x+y)..with coefficients
determined for example by Pascals Triangle.

Objectives:
Students will be able to add polynomials.
Students will be able to subtract polynomials.
Students will be able to multiply (F.O.I.L) polynomials.

Differentiation Strategies:
Group work
Creating a website
interactive activities
interactions with technology

ENGAGEMENT:
Day 1 &2:
The question, How do we add or subtract polynomials?, will be written on a board. The
students will have 5 minutes to complete a Think(the students think about the questions),
Pair(the students will grab a partner and they will discuss the question together), and then
Share(they will share their thoughts with the class).
Next, still will be watch the video https://youtu.be/ZGl2ExHwdak
We will discuss adding and subtracting polynomials as a class.
Next, students will be presented with https://youtu.be/iB3L5csbB4E
As a class, we will discuss the video.

EXPLORATION:
Day 3 & 4:
Students will be given the following website, http://www.coolmath.com/algebra/03polynomials
Students will use the website to further their knowledge for computing the operations of

polynomials. The website offers definition and examples along with interactive exercises.
Once students have completed looking through the website, students will be take a look at
www.GeoGebra.org.
Students will search for operations of polynomials. Students can choose which interactive
activities they want to complete.
EXPLANATION:
Day 5:
Students will view a prezi presentation. They will compare their notes to the information in
the Prezi presentation. They will add to the notes they have already taken. The prezi can be
found by clicking on the following link: http://prezi.com/bnelitssnynk/?

Students will be asked various levels of questions.

ELABORATION:
Day 6 & 7:
Individual Project: Students will complete a bubbl.us mind map that portray that steps need
to complete the operations for polynomials.

EVALUATION:
Day 8:
Students will be formally assessed through Kahoot. The Kahoot game will assess the
students on adding and subtracting polynomials, F.O.I.L, and distributed property. The Kahoot
game can be found at: https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/eccd3855-aaac-442f-a1f9-79ff840d2f8d
