INTRODUCTION
PROFILES, an informational factbook about the University of Denver - its faculty, programs,
students, facilities, and finances - has been published every year since 1981.
Profiles began as a collaborative effort between the Offices of the Vice Chancellor for Business and
Financial Affairs and the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. It now originates in the Office of
the Provost, but it relies on the cooperation and support of offices across the campus for its success.
PROFILES 2006-07 contains the following sections: General University, Enrollment, Financial
Aid, Credit Hours and Degrees, Faculty, Financial Data, and Miscellaneous. A brief narrative at the
beginning of each section describes the section's contents.
We strive for 100% accuracy because PROFILES is an official record of the University's activities
and serves as the source of data for external reporting as well as internal documentation and
planning. Occasionally we become aware of an error or ways to improve the integrity of previous
years' data. Each new edition of PROFILES reflects any changes we may have made during the
year; therefore, you should refer to the most recent edition not only for current but also for historical
information. If you find any apparent discrepancies in this edition, please let us know, and we will
gladly investigate and/or explain.

CLASS SIZE, CREDIT HOURS
AND DEGREES
Undergraduate Class Size: Fall 2002 through Fall 2006 undergraduate classes grouped by division
and class size.
Credit Hours Attempted: A graphical and detailed view of the credit hours taken by
undergraduate and graduate students in University programs.
Degrees Awarded: A graphical and detailed view of the degrees conferred for the past 5 years.
The sections with detail by program have been changed to detail by department for greater
consistency between division/school/college reporting. Prior year data have been restated.
It is important to remember a number of things when using and interpreting the data on credit hours
attempted:
o Credit hours of students who withdraw from courses prior to the end-of-third week census
date are excluded
o Credit hours of students who take an incomplete final grade are included, as are credit hours
attempted by students who register after the third week census date
o All Summer and Interterm hours are excluded
With respect to data on degrees conferred, the following should be noted:

o If an individual graduates with multiple majors but one degree, the degree is reported by
the department or program of the major the student declared first. If an individual
graduates with two degrees, both are shown.

FACULTY
Faculty count numbers typically circulated by the University conform to the reporting guidelines specified by
the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). AAUP guidelines include only filled full-time
positions held by teaching faculty who do not hold administrative appointments above the level of department
chair. The committed position numbers differ from AAUP numbers by the inclusion of appointed faculty who
are less than full time, positions held by people on leave without pay, vacant positions, tenure relinquishment
and other special agreements, non-teaching faculty (Penrose librarians), pre-collegiate program teachers
(English Language Center) and administrators with faculty rank. Committed positions are stated as full-time
equivalents (FTE). For example, a teaching faculty member with an ongoing half-time appointment is
counted as .5 FTE. A tenured administrator is shown as 1 FTE, even though he/she may be teaching less than
half time or not at all. Regardless, the individual's claim is to a full position. In summary, the committed
positions represent all outstanding faculty and faculty position commitments. For Fall 2006, the committed
position count is 625.59, and the AAUP population is 533.
Committed Faculty Positions: An inclusive count of the faculty positions, in varying categories, to which the
University is committed.
Committed faculty positions include Tenure-Track and Non-Tenure-Track positions.
Tenure-Track positions include both filled and vacant positions as follows:

o Those filled with tenured faculty (whether present, on sabbatical, or on leave-of-absence without
pay);
o Those filled with tenure-track faculty (e.g. with an incumbent, whether present, on sabbatical, or on
leave-of-absence without pay);
o Those filled with non-tenure-track faculty (one-year visitors and tenure-relinquishment agreement
faculty);
o And those that are vacant.
Non-Tenure-Track positions, filled or vacant, are positions that do not carry a tenurable status.

based on AAUP guidelines for reporting.
Full-time Faculty and Tenure Trends: Comparison of tenured faculty to all full-time faculty in each
academic department.
Faculty Salaries: Included are three sets of information regarding faculty salaries for the AAUP population.
The first is the average faculty salary by rank for continuing individuals. The second is the average faculty
salary by rank for full-time appointed faculty. Last is the weighted average salary by rank and gender for full-
time faculty.

Penrose Library Holdings: A five-year look at Penrose Library’s holdings.
Physical Facilities: Summary information about University physical facilities that are utilized for
instruction, faculty and administrative offices, research, student affairs, physical plant, athletics and
housing. The facilities included do not represent the total of all property owned or maintained by the
University; Greek houses, rental properties and properties not owned by the University are
referenced only in terms of square footage. Construction projects that are still in process as of June
30, 2006, will be included in the future when they are completed.
