of historical figures in Georgia history. a. Identify the
contributions made by these historic figures: James
Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of
Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee
alphabet); Jackie Robinson (sports); Martin Luther King, Jr.
(civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights).
b. Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is
similar to and different from everyday life in the present
(food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication,
recreation, rights, and freedoms).

Whole Class Activity:
Using iPad, have students respond, on a teacher created padlet, to the
questionWho is Jackie Robinson? Place students in small groups. Read
informational texts about Jackie Robinson. These texts can be a different
reading levels to allow for differences in readiness/ability within the class.
Have groups revisit the padlet and add two interesting facts they learned
from their reading. The padlet can be viewed on the projector. Allow
students opportunities to discuss what they see on the padlet.

Teacher should form heterogeneous groups to discuss the Thinking Hat
questions. A recorder in each group should write down the answers from
the group for the White, Yellow, Black, and Red Hats.

Directions: Thinking Hats Questions


The teacher will assign you to each of the Thinking Hat groups except for
the Blue Hat thinking. Work in groups to answer your Hats questions.
Each group should have a recorder to write the answers. Groups will share
their answers with the whole class before each student starts the Blue Hat
Thinking questions / activity.

White Hat Thinking (Facts)


1. What facts do you know about the time period in which Jackie

2. What are some important contributions and accomplishments that

3. What are some important contributions and accomplishments that

Conferencing with students as they answer questions as well as the

Blue Hat Thinking (Summarizing)
1. Listen to the song Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball? Write
your own poem, song, or rap expressing your thoughts about Jackie.
2. Who is your favorite baseball player? Write and present a paragraph
telling us about him or create a baseball card for your favorite player.
3. Baseball is to summer as ______________________ is to winter. Baseball
bat is to ______________ as tennis racket is to ______________. Write 4
more analogies about sports.
4. Draw and explain 4 cause and effect pictures to go with your
knowledge about civil rights. Examples, because the Jackie
Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers other African American
athletes were able to join professional sports. Because Rosa Parks
didnt give up her seat on the bus, she was jailed and the bus
