Rhetorical Reflection
In this assessment, I had to analyze and critique the rhetorical effect used by a speaker in
a TED Talk. My goal was to take into considerations all of the methods and techniques used by
the author to expand his arguments towards his/her audience. In my case, I chose to analyze
Joshua Katz Toxic Culture of Education. This TED Talk appeal more to me because I
personally know what it is like to struggle in school due to non-cognitive factors, which is the
issue that Katz is addressing. I enjoyed analyzing this TED Talk as the authors methods and
rhetorical mechanisms were very clear and easy identify. I think the most difficult situation I
faced while assessing this excerpt was trying to find the actual weakness of the author during his
presentation, and how he could have approached certain aspects differently. This essay allowed
me to gain more insightful skills that involve interpreting the rhetorical effects used by authors or
writers to accomplish their goal. With these new skills, I hope to apply them to my next essay
and improve on elements that might have fell weak on while composing this essay.
