Detained UBK students released

The Jakarta police


released on Thursday 10
Bung Karno University
(UBK) students who had
been detained following a
violent clash with the
police on Wednesday.

he students were
released from custody at
around 5 p.m. on
Thursday afternoon,
according Alit Kustijar, a
spokesman of the universitys
students association.
They were are all in a
healthy condition, including the
four students that were treated at
the Jakarta polices health
facilities due to injuries sustained
in the clash.
Earlier on Thursday, the
students lawyer, Rio Arief
Wicakson, said that the four
students that were undergoing
health treatment were suffering
from bruises. This is because the
police arrested them forcefully,
Rio told reporters.
Jakarta police spokesman
Sr.Comr.Baharuddin Djafar told
The Jakarta Post in a text
message that the student would
not be required to report to the
police periodically after their
release.
On Wednesday, around 200
UBK students had begun a
peaceful protest in front of the
Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation
(LBH) building in Cikini, Central
Jakarta, near their campus
grounds at 1 p.m.
The students were initially
staging a peaceful rally to express
solidarity for their fellow UBK
student Sondang Hutagalung,

who died after setting himself on


fire in a protest in front of the
State Palace last week.

Wednesdays clash took


place after students burned a
picture of President Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono, prompting
the officers to disperse
thestudents around 4 p.m.,
shooting at them with tear gas
and rubber bullets.

Diponegoro, which leads to Cipto
Mangunkusumo Hospital, creating
a severe traffic jam in the area.
Central Jakarta police chief
Sr.Comr.angesta Romani yoyol
was injured in the confrontation,
after a rock hit his head. He was
immediately rushed to near by
Cipto Mangun Kusumo Hospital
for treatment.
Baharuddin reported that
Angesta was in fine condition as
of Thursday evening. He is
conscious and he can talk too,
he said, adding that the police will
still continue their investigation
on the case to find the culprit who
threw the stone at Angesta.
Separately, the universitys
deputy rector for student affairs,
Daniel Panda, thanked the police
for their help and cooperation
during the questioning process.
I have discussed the
situation with the Jakarta Police
chief and we have agreed to work
together to find the best
solution, he told the post.
He said that he hoped
future protests staged by his
university students would go on
peacefully and would not turn into
anarchy.

overreacted during Wednesdays
clash. In the future, both the
police and the students must be

able to refrain themselves from


being easily provoked, he said.
