Seventh Semester, (Regulation 2013) Civil Engineering CE 6701 STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS AND EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING (IS 1893, IS 4326 & IS 13920 codes are permitted) Time: 3 Hrs Maximum: 100 Marks Answer ALL Question PART A (10 x 2 = 20 marks) 1. Compare the static problem with a dynamic problem? 2. Differentiate between active and passive damping? 3. Write a short on free vibration analysis? 4. What is the fundamental frequency and fundamental modes? 5. What are the causes of earthquake? 6. Differentiate between magnitude and intensity? 7. What are the causes of soil liquefaction? 8. What is called ductility factor? 9. What do you mean by seismic dampers? 10. What is meant by energy dissipation capacity? PART B (5 x 16 = 80 marks) 11. (a) A single degree of freedom system having a mass of 2.5kg, is set into motion with viscous damping and allowed to oscillate freely. The frequency of oscillation is found to be 20Hz and measurement of the amplitude of vibration shows two successive amplitude of be 6mm and 5.5mm. Determine the viscous damping coefficient. (16) (OR) (b) A machine foundation weights 60kN. The spring constant is 11000kN/m and dashpot (damper) constant C = 200 kNs/m. determine (i) whether the system is over damped, undamped or critically damped (ii) Logarithmic decrement (iii) Ratio of two successive amplitudes (iv) Damped natural frequency (v) Is the initial displacement is 10mm and initial velocity is to zero displacement at time period 0.1s. (16) 12. (a) In a two storeyed building frame, the mass m1 = m2 = 1000kg, and stiffness are k1 = k2 = 1MN/m if a horizontal force of 20kN is applied at the top of ground storey level, determine the displacement of masses m1 and m2. (16) (OR) (b) Explain with neat examples of multi-degree of freedom system. (16) 13. (a) Explain the measurement of earthquakes using seismograph with neat sketch. (16) (OR) (b) On what is the assignment of an earthquakes magnitude based? Is magnitude the same as intensity? (16) 14. (a) Explain the response spectrum IS: 1893:2002 with neat sketch. (16) (OR) (b) Explain the concept of design spectrum with sketches. (16) 15. (a) A three storeyed single bay building frame of a hospital building is reinforced concrete it is situated in zone IV. The height between floors is 3m, the dead load and live loads are lumped at the respective floor levels. The structure is resisting on hard rock. Stiffness of each column in I, II and III floors are 400kN/m, 300kN/m, and 300kN/m respectively, the seismic weight of I, II, III floors are 80kN, 40kN and 40kN respectively. Determine the total base shear and the equivalent lateral loads at various floor levels using the empirical methods of IS 1893-2002(Part-I). (16) (OR) (b) Briefly describe the type of plan irregularities and vertical irregularities of buildings with neat sketches & Plan irregularities. (16)
